Abstract

A swab comprises an absorbent pad 6 attached to an exterior surface a flexible waterproof bag with a mouth 14 for accommodation of a hand. The bag forms a barrier to contact with any substances absorbed by the pad during cleaning. The swab may then be turned inside-out after use, enclosing the pad 6 within, further obviating contact with any substances carried by the absorbent pad 6. The bag may be formed from plastics material. The bag may be formed from substantially rectangular opposed panels 2,4 which are welded or otherwise joined along three of their adjacent edges 8, 10, 12. The bag may be formed of two separate panels, welded along three edges 8, 10, 12 or may be formed from a single sheet with a fold at one edge 10 weld along two of the other edges 8, 12. A tab (16, fig.4) may extend internally from the innermost edge of the bag so that it may be gripped and pulled outwards through the opening of the bag to turn the swab inside-out. A flap or drawstring may be provided at the opening of the bag to seal it once it has been turned inside out. Also disclosed is a method of making a swab, by superimposing two layers of waterproof sheet material and a layer of absorbent material, welding the three layer together along one or more lines to define a pocket between waterproof layers and separating the pocket from the three layers to form a bag. The method may involve forming such swabs from layers drawn from continuous strips of sheet material.

Description

2353465 Swab The present invention relates to a swab which may be used for
wiping clean a surface.
It is well known to use a pad of absorbent material as a swab for wiping clean a surface.
However, existing pads are highly unsanitary in that, is use, they do not provide a barrier between a person's hand and any substance absorbed by the pad. Furthermore, after use, any substance wiped from a surface remains exposed on the surface of the pad prior to its disposal.
1 have now devised an arrangement which overcomes the limitations of existing swabs.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a swab comprising a flexible waterproof bag having an absorbent pad attached to its exterior surface such that the bag may be turned inside-out to enclose the absorbent pad.
The swab is thus more sanitary than existing swabs as, in use to wipe clean a surface, the waterproof bag provides a barrier between a person's hand and any substance absorbed by the pad.
Furthermore, by turning the bag inside out, any substance wiped from the surface may be contained within the bag prior to its disposal.
Preferably the bag is formed from plastics material.
Preferably the bag is formed from substantially rectangular opposed panels of waterproof material which are welded or otherwise joined together along three of their adjacent edges.
For example, the opposed panels of the bag may comprise opposed portions of a folded piece of sheet material, the two portions being welded or otherwise joined together along a further two of their adjacent free edges.
Alternatively, the bag may be formed from two separate panels of sheet material.
Preferably the absorbent pad comprises a substantially rectangular panel of absorbent material which is superimposed over the exterior surface of one of the waterproof panels.
2 Respective rectangular panels of absorbent material may be superimposed over the exterior surface of each of the waterproof panels.
Preferably a tab extends internally from the innermost edge of the bag, so that the tab may be gripped and pulled outwards through the opening of the bag to turn the bag insideout.
A flap or a draw string arrangement is preferably provided at the opening of the bag to close the opening when the bag is turned inside out.
Also in accordance with the present invention, there is provided a method for forming a swab, said method comprising the steps of:
superimposing two layers of waterproof sheet material and a layer of absorbent sheet material; welding the three superimposed layers together along one or more lines to define a pocket between the layers of waterproof; and separating the pocket from the three superimposed layers to form a bag.
Preferably a number of swabs are formed by a continuous process wherein the layers are drawn from continuous strips of sheet material.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of an example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an isometric view of a swab in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is an exploded isometric view of the swab of Figure 1; and Figures 3 and 4 illustrate the sequence of operations by which the swab may be turned inside-out for disposal.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, a swab is shown comprising a superimposed arrangement of two rectangular panels 2,4 of waterproof plastics sheet material and a rectangular panel 6 of absorbent material.
The two panels 2,4 of plastics sheet material are joined together along three of their opposed edges 8,10,12 to form a bag having an opening 14. The panel 6 of absorbent 3 material covers the panel 4 and is joined to the bag along its edges 8,10,12. A further panel of absorbent material (not shown) may be joined to the bag to cover the exposed surface of the panel 2.
It will be appreciated that, in use, a person's hand may thus be inserted into the bag through the opening 14 to wipe the absorbent panel 6 across a surface. The swab may then be turned inside-out to enclose the absorbent panel 6, as shown in Figures 3 and 4, by gripping a tab 16, which projects internally from the innermost edge 10 of the bag, and pulling the tab outwards through the opening 14 in the bag.
The swab thus described is more sanitary than existing swabs as it allows any substance carried by the absorbent panel to be isolated from a person handling the swab either during or after use.
