Abstract
A ventilated ridge tile (10) is constructed from a base tile (12) having a ventilating aperture, preferably in the from of a rectangular slot (26) and a cover tile (14) mounted on the base tile (12) in such a way as to form a ventilating gap. The base tile (12) may have raised portions (24) at either end, on which the cover tile (14) sits, thereby providing ventilating gaps between the cover tile (14) and base tile (12) along the sides of the ridge tile (10). The ridge tile (10) is preferably formed from pigmented cast concrete.
Description
2353300 TITLE: Ridge Tiles.
DESCRIPTION
This invention concerns ridge tiles and, in particular, concerns ventilating ridge tiles.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved ventilating ridge tile.
According to this invention a ventilating ridge tile comprises a base tile having at least one ventilating aperture therein and a cover tile mountable on the base tile to leave a ventilating gap on at least one side thereof between the cover tile and the base tile.
The base tile preferably has spaced raised portions on which the cover tile is mountable. The raised portions are preferably at opposite ends of the base tile, whereby gaps are provided between the cover tile and the base tile along sides thereof between the raised portions.
The ventilating aperture in the base tile is preferably a longitudinal slot in the base tile, especially a rectangular section slot.
The ventilating ridge tile, of the invention can be made as an "in-line" vent ridge tile. In other words, it does not have to have any component or part extending above a roof ridge line, in order not to spoil the aesthetic appeal of the roof line.
The ventilating ridge tiles of the invention are preferably made from concrete by casting in appropriately shaped moulds. The concrete may be 2 pigmented to produce a ridge tile of any desired colour.
The preferred ridge tiles of the invention are typically used by affixing the base tile to a roof ridge by means of bedding mortar or a dry fixing component along edges thereof and the cover tile affixed at opposite ends to the base tile using similar materials.
This invention will now be further described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of a ridge tile of the invention; and Figure 2 is a section through the ridge tile of Figure 1 on a roof ridge.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, a roof ridge tile 10 consists of a base tile 12 and a cover tile 14. The base tile 12 has an arcuate central part 16 having longer sides 18 and shorter ends 20. The sides 18 have flat edges 22 therealong. At each end 20 the base tile is raised relative to the central part to provide mounts 24 for the cover tile.
Longitudinally of the central part 16 is a rectangular section ventilation slot 26.
The cover tile 14 is simply an arcuate tile shaped an d sized to sit at each end on the mounts 24 of the base tile.
The two tile parts 12 and 14 are made by casting concrete in appropriately shaped moulds and may be pigmented for a desired colour.
As can be seen in Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings, the ridge tile 10 is for use over a roof ridge 40 having a ventilation slot 42 between ends of facing roof tiles 44 supported by battens 46.
3 The base tile 12 is.affixed over the ridge using bedding mortar 48 (or a dry fixing component) along opposite edges thereof. The cover tile 14 is then mounted on the base tile again using bedding mortar at opposite ends of the cover tile.
Because of the raised ends of the base tile, there is a gap between the cover tile and the base tile along its longer edges. Those gaps communicate via the slot 26 of the base tile with the aperture in the ridge to provide for ventilation through the roof ridge without having any venting component or feature above the roof line.
Claims (8)
- A ventilating ridge tile comprising a base tile having at least one ventilating aperture therein and a cover tile mounted on the base tile to leave a ventilating gap on at least one side thereof between the cover tile and the base tile.
- 2. A ventilating ridge tile as claimed in claim 1, wherein the base tile has spaced raised portions on which the cover tile is mounted.
- 3. A ventilating ridge tile as claimed in claim 2, wherein the raised portions are at opposite ends of the base tile, whereby gaps are provided between the cover tile and the base tile along sides thereof between the raised portions.
- 4. A ventilating ridge tile as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the ventilating aperture in the base tile is a longitudinal slot in the base tile.
- 5. A ventilating ridge tile as claimed in claim 4, wherein the slot is a rectangular section slot.
- 6. A ventilating ridge tile as claimed in any one of claims I to 5 made from concrete by casting in appropriately shaped moulds.
- 7. A ventilating ridge tile as claimed in claim 6, wherein the concrete is pigmented.
- 8. A ventilating ridge tile substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
