Abstract

A vehicle carries a GPS receiver 11. Data store 10 contains the positions of sites of interest such as speed cameras, restaurants, hotels or filling stations. If the stored positions are close to the position determined by the GPS, the driver is informed 14. Processing may take into account the direction of travel of the vehicle, and a buffer may store information about the next few locations of interest. The driver may input the positions of interest himself, or download them.

Description

2353160 Digital MWing The present invention relates to a method and
apparatus for mapping locations and more particularly to a method and apparatus for indicating proximity to predetennined locations.
It is already known that one can determine one's location using satellite-based systems such as GPS and that portable equipment is available for such purposes.
The present invention provides a method and apparatus for monitoring the proximity of a user to a predetermined location as the user moves along a path of movement.
The predetermined location is preferably stored as data reference points and the system monitors the current location as compared with the predetermined location and provides an indication to the user when a predetermined location is within a pre-set distance.
The storing of the predetermined locations can be achieved in any one of a number of ways e.g. by previously travelling along the path and noting in some convenient way the data associated with significant locations.
Alternatively, the data can be uploaded into a data memory from another data base.
In order that the present invention be more readily understood an embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a block diagrammatic representation of a system for mapping predetermined locations.
The present invention will be described in relation to its use for mapping the locations of speed cameras but it will be appreciated that the invention is of more general application and could also be used for mapping the locations of selected filling stations or restaurants.
Basically, in one mode of operation, a driver will travel over a 2 particular route and have with him a portable piece of equipment which has means 11 capable of indicating his current location e.g. in terms of a convenient set of coordinates. His location may, or may not, be displayed on an accompanying map but in any event, when he arrives at the vicinity of a location in which he is interested, such as a speed camera, the apparatus is arranged to provide him with means for inputting the location into a data store 10 for future use. This operation is then repeated as necessary throughout the j ourney.
It will be appreciated that it may be necessary to store data relating to both specific location and direction of travel in the data store 10. This can be achieved in any convenient fashion eg by having a compass associated with the current location monitor 11. Alternatively, the current location monitor 11 can be provided with a buffer store for recording a plurality eg three successive locations.
In this case, when the user wishes to record a particular location, one or more previous locations may also be stored in the data store 10.
The loading of data into the buffer store may be controlled in a convenient manner but one way is to clock data relating to different locations through a register under the control of a memory processor chip. Consequently, the clock rate can be varied depending upon the speed of travel of the user or vehicle. In other words, if the equipment is fitted to a car, the buffer store may be clocked and data updated every few seconds, whereas if fitted to a bicycle, the buffer store may be clocked every few minutes. Much depends on the speed of travel of the user and the accuracy of the GFPS signal. The equipment may be arranged to automatically change clock rate for the buffer store in order to deal, with different speeds of travel or a manually operated switch could be provided to cause the clock rate to change to a different, pre-set rate than the current rate.
The insertion of data into the data store 10 by the user travelling over a particular route as described above is indicated by the diagrammatic representation of a push button 15. Alternatively, the user could be supplied with preprogramed information which he could up load into his apparatus via an 3 Internet interface and/or radio transmission. This would be particularly useful if you were to be provided with the locations of filling stations, restaurants and/or hotels.
When using preprogrammed inforination, data processing equipment may be provided whereby the current location or a desired location can be used to select from the preprogrammed information only those other locations relevant to the current or desired location. Also, means may be provided for writing one of those selected other locations into the data store 10.
In use, when driving over the same route again the device for monitoring the current location of the person or vehicle I I outputs a signal to a threshold device 12 where the current location is compared with the stored location and, if the two correspond sufficiently closely, a signal is sent to an indication circuit 14 to provide a suitable indication of this comparison to the user of the device.
The indication provided to the driver could either be a simple audible or visual indication or both or could be a precise message providing details of the predetermined location. As indicated by the broken line in the diagram the indication can be controlled as a function of the stored data.
It will be appreciated that the present invention could be most usefully combined with existing car navigation equipment but could also be independent of the vehicle. Consequently, the device could be capable of being driven from dry cell batteries or from a rechargeable battery such as a car battery.
