Abstract

A method of fabricating a transparent resin cover 6 is disclosed. During the injection moulding of the cover, a decorative sheet 4 is inserted into a first mould part 1, a continuous film, as a coating of the cover, 5 is fed into a second mould part 2 and a transparent resin 3 is injected into the cavity of the mould parts between the sheet 4 and the film 5. This allows the fabrication of the double sides of the transparent resin cover to be carried out simultaneously with the molding of the transparent resin cover. Different configurations of the cover are shown in figures 8(a) and 8(b). Sheet 4 has a printed layer 4b applied at the designated position of an upper surface of a polyethylene terephthalate transparent base (4a)(figure 2 - not shown) and an adhesive layer (4c) applied at the undersurface of layer (4a). Film 5 has a peeling layer (5b) and a UV coating layer (5c) formed on a band-shape sheet (5a). An adhesive layer (5d) is applied to a printed layer (5e) applied on layer (5c).

Description

2350583 METHOD FOR FABRICATING DOUBLE SIDES OF TRANSPARENT RESIN COVER
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1, Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a method for fabricating double sides of a transparent resin cover used for a liquid crystal display section of, for example, a cellular phone, decorated with a frame, letters, designs or the like, and especially of a transparent resin cover to which decorations or a hard coating is applicable with a single fabrication procedure. 2. Description of Related Art
A transparent resin cover printed and decorated with letters, designs or the like is attached to a liquid crystal display section used in a cellular phone or the like. Usually, this decoration is made, after a printed sheet is placed in transparent resin, on an upperside or an underside of the transparent resin cover with an insert molding which is carried out by injecting the transparent resin.
In recent years, however, it has been often found that a hard coating layer is placed on the surface of such a transparent resin cover to improve scratch-resistant property. In this case, a sheet for hard coating, as a matter of course, is placed in a mold to conduct the insert molding so a hard coating fabrication is carried out on the surface of the transparent resin cover.
In such a case, the decoration by the insert molding as mentioned above is impossible, so an ex-post printing such as a screen printing or the like of letters or designs has to be made after the transparent resin cover is formed, and this raises a problem of higher manufacturing cost as the printing step is required. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to provide a method for fabricating double sides of a transparent resin cover where, when the fabrication of the double sides of the transparent resin cover is carried out, it can be made simultaneously with the molding of the transparent resin cover.
The above-mentioned problem is solved by the method for fabricating double sides of the transparent resin cover according to the invention, and the method includes, when the injection molding of the transparent resin cover is applied to the injection molding, the steps of inserting a decorative sheet into a first mold, feeding a continuous film for hard coating into a second mold, and injecting the transparent resin between the decorative sheet and the continuous film to form the transparent resin cover where the first mold and the second mold are closed. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The above and other objects and features of the invention are apparent to those skilled in the art from the following referred embodiments thereof when considered in conjunction with the accompanied drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a mold used for manufacturing of a transparent resin cover according to an embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of a part A shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of a part B shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a PET sheet piece; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an endless film; Fig. 6 is a sectional side view of a formed transparent resin cover; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the transparent resin cover; and Fig. 8 is a structural illustration of a transparent resin cover of another embodiment according to the invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Referring to Fig. 1 through Fig. 6, an embodiment according to the invention is to be explained. Fig. 1 is a side view of a mold used for manufacturing of a transparent resin cover according to an embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of a part A shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of a part B shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a PET sheet piece. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an endless film. Fig. 6 is a sectional side view of a formed transparent resin cover. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the transparent resin cover. Fig. 8 is a structural illustration of a transparent resin cover of another embodiment according to the invention.
2 As shown in Fig. 1, a mold used in the method for manufacturing the transparent resin cover according to the embodiment of the invention is composed of a stationary mold I as a first mold and a movable mold 2 as a second mold.
The stationary mold 1 includes a main cavity Ia on its center, and at the bottom surface of the main cavity 1 a, there is formed a suction slit lb for suctioning and holding a PET sheet piece 4 to be inserted thereto. The suction slit lb is in communication with a suction passage 1c formed in the stationary mold 1, and the suction passage ic is connected to a suction pump (not shown) outside the mold. Further, a gate ld is formed at the stationary mold 1 for injecting synthetic resin to the main cavity Ia.
There is formed a shallow sub cavity 2a in the movable mold 2 on a position that corresponds to that of the main cavity Ia when closed to the stationary mold 1.
Under the state where the decorated PET sheet piece 4 is secured to the bottom of the main cavity Ia of the stationary mold 1, the stationary mold 1 and movable mold 2 as explained above are closed, and then an endless film 5 containing a hard coating layer is sandwiched at the bottom of the sub cavity 2a of the movable mold 2. A transparent synthetic resin is injected between the PET sheet piece 4 and the endless film 5, or in a molding space formed with the main cavity Ia and the sub cavity 2a, to form a transparent resin layer 3, thereby manufacturing a transparent resin cover (see Fig. 6).
Referring to Fig. 2 and Fig. 4, explained is the structure of the PET sheet piece 4. The PET sheet 4 has a printed layer 4b applied at the designated position of an upper surface of a PET (polyethylene terephthalate) transparent base 4a and an adhesive layer 4c applied to the entire undersurface of the base. As a result, a transparent sheet is provided with a frame 4B formed by printing on peripheral portions and a window 4A formed on a center. The printed layer 4b can be formed at the undersurface of the transparent base 4a, that is, between the transparent base 4a and an adhesive layer 4c.
Referring to Fig. 3 and Fig. 5, explained is a structure of the endless film 5. A peeling layer 5b and a UV hard coating layer 5c are formed on a band-shape PET sheet 5a, and then an adhesive layer 5d is applied to a printed layer 5e which has been applied on the UV hard coating layer 5c.
The endless film 5 is wound and kept in a roll state, and the front end, after drawn 3 from the roll, passes between the stationary mold 1 and the movable mold 2 of the mold to transfer the layers above the peeling layer 5b to products, and subsequently the film is wound and collected again into a roll state in the same way.
In other words, a blank roll 5A of the endless film 5 contains the multilayer constituted of the PET sheet 5a to the adhesive layer 5d. After the molding injection of the transparent resin cover within the mold, the UV hard coating layer 5c, the printed layer 5e, and the adhesive layer 5d are transferred to the transparent resin cover side when the molded cover is removed, and therefore the only PET sheet 5a and the peeling layer 5b are collected in the collection roll 5B of the transparent resin cover.
The printed layer 5e of the endless film 5 with same patterns printed repeatedly at a prescribed interval. The transparent resin sheet is successively manufactured using molds by winding and collecting the sheet into the collection roll 5B, and by sequentially sending the following printing pattern.
As explained above, in the method for manufacturing the transparent rcsin cover of the invention, the decoration of one side of the transparent resin cover can be carried out by the PET sheet piece 4 simultaneously when the decoration or the hard coating of the other side of the transparent resin cover is carried out by the endless film 5, so this can provide less manufacturing steps, thereby achieving lower cost.
Referring to Fig. 6 and Fig. 7, a structure of a transparent resin cover 6 manufactured by the above manufacturing procedure is explained. The transparent resin cover 6 is constituted of a PET sheet layer 4X as a first layer, the transparent resin layer 3 as a second layer, and a hard coating layer 5X as a third layer which are formed from the bottom to the top in this order. In the transparent resin cover 6, the hard coating layer 5X is used as the surface of the transparent resin cover 6.
In other words, the PET sheet layer 4X is formed as the unification of the adhesive layer 4c with the transparent resin layer 3 by the insert molding of the PET sheet piece 4, and the hard coating layer 5X is formed by, after formation of the transparent resin layer 3 on the endless film 5, the unification of the adhesive layer 5d with the transparent resin layer 3 and by the peeling of the printed layer 5e and the UV hard coating layer 5c. from the PET sheet layer 5a.
4 As shown in Fig. 7, in a state of attaching to the display window of the cellular phone, or reversing so as to make the hard coating layer 5X faced up, the printed layer 5e exists at a surface inside the hard coating layer 5X, and on the other side of the transparent resin layer 3 which faces down, the printed layer 4b of the PET sheet layer 4X can be seen. Thus, the manufactured transparent resin cover 6 provides three- dimensional feeling, in which the printing is shown in depth.
A center portion of the transparent resin cover with the above structure becomes transparent by the window section 4A of the PET sheet layer 4X. Accordingly, when the transparent resin cover 6 is attached to a display unit (not shown) such as a liquid crystal plate or the like of the cellular phone, the display contents of the display unit can be visually recognized through the window section 4A of the PET sheet layer 4X.
When attached to the cellular phone, the transparent resin cover 6 has the hard coating layer 5c at its topmost surface, and also the two printed layers 4b and 5e are not exposed to the surface, thereby excelling in scratch-resistant property.
Next, another embodiment of the invention is shown in Fig. 8. In a transparent resin cover 7 as shown in Fig. 8(a), a hard coating layer 5X of a center 7a corresponding to a window section 4A of a PET sheet layer 4X is caved in, thereby having a distinctive border between the window section 4A and a frame section 4B as the circumference.
As for a transparent resin cover 8 as shown in Fig. 8(b), the shape of a hard coating layer 5X of the center 8a. is convex toward the undersurface, thus to be able to display the display contents in an enlarged way by a lens effect.
In either transparent resin cover 7 or transparent resin cover 8, forming the convex or concave shape in a cavity 1 a of a stationary mold 1 can transform a PET sheet 4 to be easily molded with heat and pressure during the injection of transparent resin 3.
According to the embodiments thus explained, the transparent resin cover is explained as a cover for a display window used in a cellular phone, but can be, as a matter of course, as a cover for a display window used in other devices, such as a digital watch, a portable radio or the like.
According to the method for fabricating the double sides of the transparent resin cover of the invention as described above, the decoration and the hard coating of the upper surface and under surface can be made at a single procedure, thereby achieving a high production efficiency.
According to the invention, the decoration as well as the formation of the hard coating layer can be made simultaneously by insert molding, so the production efficiency can be improved as well with this respect.
The foregoing description of preferred embodiments of the invention has been presented for purposes of illustration and description, and is not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the invention to the precise form disclosed. The description was selected to best explain the principles of the invention and their practical application to enable others skilled in the art to best utilize the invention in various embodiments and various modifications as are suited to the particular use contemplated. It is intended that the scope of the invention not be limited by the specification, but be defined claims set forth below.
