Packing tea or the like into paper bags or cartons.-Relates to machines, for filling tea and the like into bags or cartons, in which a packet wheel having receptacles for the bags is intermittently rotated to bring the bags to successive positions of rest for filling, folding, &c. According to the invention, a packet wheel is formed with a number of channel-shaped boxes open at the side nearest the periphery of the wheel, and a guard ring partially surrounds the wheel to retain the bags, which after filling or other operations, are ejected through the open sides of the box by a horizontally acting member. The support plates for the bags in each box are adjustably and frictionally held, and adapted to be acted upon by a vibratory device. As shown, the bags are inserted in the machine at position W, Fig. 1, and undergo filling or other operations before arriving at the position X by a series of intermittent anticlockwise rotations. The packet wheel 1, Figs. 1 and 4, carries a number of channel-shaped boxes 2, open at each end and at the side corresponding with the periphery of the wheel. A support plate 22 is arranged in each box on a sliding bar 23, to support the bags, which are inserted at position W, and a roller 28 on a pin 29 engages a concentric and vertically adjustable runway 30, the upper face of which is of inclined or helical shape so that the bag is raised to a predetermined position in the box. The support plate 22 is normally frictionally held in position by a plunger 55 with a pad 56 operating in a boss 54, and urged against the sliding bar 23 by springs 58, 58<a>. In order to remove the frictional pressure of the pad so that vibrating movements may be imparted to the plate 22, a runway 68 acts upon a bell crank lever 64, 65, which is actuated to withdraw the pad. The vibratory movements are imparted by a cam having a wavy contour in a sector 34 which is engaged by the roller 28. The sector 34 is vertically adjustable and may be horizontally reciprocated by means of cams 53, 53a engaging the rollers 48, 48<a> or arms 47, 47<a> connected to the arms 37, 37<a> carrying the sector by a lever 49 and link 44. A guard ring 71 retains the bags laterally in the channels during rotation, and after filling, folding, or other operations have been performed, the bag is ejected at position X. The ejector comprises a member 6 acting through openings 5 in the sides of the boxes and thrusts the packets laterally into a delivery channel 21. According to the Provisional Specification, a rammer may be employed to ensure contact of the roller 28 with the runway 30.
