Retractive, switches, specially suitable for train lighting, comprises contact blades l on a stem c which is first rotated, e.g. by a knob g, till the blades are opposite selected contacts on the base and then depressed into contact against the action of a spring d, a rim r<1> perpendicular to the base and having notches in it opposite the contacts serving to secure correct alignment. The contacts on the base comprise three clip contacts n<1>, n<2>, n3 mounted on a conducting plate m, a clip contact t and half a clip contact v mounted on a plate r and a clip contact s and half a clip contact u mounted on a plate q. The two halfclips together form a contact which, when the switch is in the position of Fig. 2, connects both plates r and q to the plate, m. The rim r<1> is fcrmed by the turned-up edges of plates r, q. A key-operated member z prevents unauthorized closure of the switch. In a modification, Fig. 5, suitable for attachment to the end of a railway coach, the member c is attached to a rod 5 which extends through the casing and is rotated and depressed by push and pull handles 6.
