Abstract

A warning system identifies the approach of an emergency vehicle 15 by means of detectors 10, 12 which identify the approach of the emergency vehicle from the sound of the siren and/or its emergency beacon. Warning beacons are then activated. These beacons are placed at suitable locations to warn other traffic, such as at road junctions, at 14, or at the side of major roads where they can be seen by traffic ahead of the emergency vehicle.

Description

EMERGENCY VEHICLE PRIORITY WARNING SYSTEM This invention relates to a emergency vehicle priority warning system In spite of the use of sirens and Hashing lights, emergency vehicles are frequently delayed at road intersections, and in the outer tanes ofduat carriageways and other roads. Such delay is caused by the failure of other drivers to identify the presence of the emergency vehicle early enough to take appropriate action. Such delays both impair the effectiveness of the response of the emergency vehicle to a particular incident and reduce the overall utilisation of such vehicles.
According to the present invention there is provided a system which will detect the approach of an emergency vehicle and provide appropriate warning of its approach to other traffic. The system comprises a system of detectors which will, for example, respond to the siren or flash'in lights of the emergency vehicle. The detectors will, when activated, operate suitable beacons, or similar devices, mounted at the roadside at appropriate positions to warn other road users of the presence of the emergency vehicle.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which : Figure t shows a possible lavout of detectors and beacons in the v) cmity of a road intersection Figure 2 shows a possible ayout of detectors and beacons on a dual carriageway Referring to the drawing optical 10 and acoustic 12 detectors are coupled to a suitable system which will recognise the characteristics of the siren or flashing iiuhts of the emeigency veinc) e 15. This system in turn operates the warning beacons 14, for example blue flashing lights These are located remotely from the detectors at d may, for example, be mounted on traffic light poies at a junction The sighting of the beacons is chosen so that they may be observed by other traffic 16

Claims (3)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A warning system which will provide early indication of the approach of an emergency vehicle at critical locations.
  2. 9 A system as claimed in Claim 1 comprising detectors which will respond to warning sirens and lights on emergency vehicles and which are coupled to a system which wil identify the characteristics peculiar to such sirens and lights.
  3. 3 A system of warning beacons which will respond to the detection system claimed in Claim 2.
