Description
PROTECTION SYSTEM FOR PROTECTING AN ARTICLE
Field of the invention
The present invention relates to a protection system for protecting an article, especially a valuable article, from loss and/or theft.
Background of the invention
In today's busy life style, it is easy for valuable items such as mobile telephones, briefcases, wallets and the like to become lost, with considerable inconvenience and cost to the owner. Furthermore, such items are occasionally stolen or otherwise taken without permission.
Some protection devices are known, for example for briefcases, where an alarm sounds if the case is opened without use of a specific code. Again, devices are known associated with the handle of a brief case so as to set off an alarm if the case is snatched from the owner's hand.
These devices are aimed at specific situations. It is however an object of the present invention to provide a protection system for use in a broad range of situations, to prevent both loss and theft.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to the invention, there is provided a protection system for protecting an article, the system comprising a master protection unit, adapted to be located on an article to be protected, and a remote protection unit, adapted to be carried on a person, each protection unit comprising a transmitter, a receiver, a timing device, a signal code recognition device, an alarm device and a control device, the control devices being so programmed that, in use: (i) the transmitter of the master protection unit periodically transmits a non-continuous coded interrogation signal; (ii) the transmitter of the remote protection unit transmits a non-continuous coded reply signal upon the receipt of the interrogation signal after a predetermined delay; (iii) the alarm device of the remote protection unit is activated upon the failure of the remote protection unit to receive the coded interrogation signal at a signal strength above a predetermined level after a predetermined period of time; and (iv) the alarm device of the master protection unit is activated upon the failure of the master protection unit to receive the coded reply signal at a signal strength above a predetermined level after a predetermined period of time.
The master protection unit and the remote protection unit can each comprise an integrated circuit chip of relatively small dimensions, which can be easily incorporated in the article to be protected on the one hand, and on a device carried by the owner on the other hand.
Examples of articles which can be protected include not only brief cases and mobile telephones already mentioned, but also luggage in general, personal organisers, wallets, purses and handbags, clothing, umbrellas, sporting equipment, tools, and other small scale items of equipment.
The remote protection unit may be, for example, incorporated in a key ring, in a watch, or in any personal item which is not normally removed from the person.
The system can also be useful for the protection of babies in prams and of children, especially in crowded places, and even for the protection of pets and other animals.
The system has the advantage that where separation occurs, an alarm is actuated both on the article being protected and on the person of the owner. The former acts as a deterrent to theft, while the latter gives immediate warning of loss or theft.
The control device of the remote protection unit may be so programmed as to activate the alarm device of the remote protection unit upon the failure of the remote protection unit to receive the next expected coded interrogation signal. In a similar manner, the control device of the master protection unit may be so programmed as to activate the alarm device of the master protection unit upon the failure of the master protection unit to receive the next expected coded reply signal. Alternatively, the alarms may be activated only when a predetermined number of signals have failed to be received.
Each alarm device may be selected from audible, vibration and optical alarm devices, or a combination thereof.
The protection system according to the invention may comprise a plurality of the master protection units and/or a plurality of the remote protection units. While usually a single master protection unit and a single remote protection unit will be involved, there is advantage in using a number of remote protection units, where a number of people are jointly responsible for the same valuable item. Also, one person may be responsible for a number of valuable items and in this case only one remote protection unit need be employed. Here, the signal code recognition device of the remote protection unit may be programmed to recognise a number of different signal codes.
The control device of the master protection unit may be programmed to transmit the coded interrogation signal every n seconds, where n may be from 1 to 10.
The alarm device of the remote protection unit may be activated upon the failure of the remote protection unit to receive the coded interrogation signal at a signal strength above a predetermined level, representing a distance between the master device and the remote device of from 1 to 20 metres. Thus, when this distance between the master protection unit and the remote protection unit is exceeded, the alarm may be activated even if a low strength signal is still being received.
Similarly, the alarm device of the master protection unit may be activated upon the failure of the master protection unit to receive the coded reply signal at a signal strength above a predetermined level, representing a distance between the master device and the remote device of from 1 to 20 metres.
Preferably, at least one of the protection units further comprises means for adjusting at least one of the predetermined level and the predetermined delay and the predetermined time period.
Both protection units will require a power source for their operation. This will usually be a portable source, such as a battery. Where the article being protected is an electrical article, such as a mobile telephone, having its own power source, then a separate power source for the master protection unit may not be required. Again, where the personal item on which the remote protection unit is located, such as a wrist watch, incorporates its own power source, then a separate power source for the remote protection unit may not be required. Because the system is designed to transmit signals occasionally, rather than continuously, power usage may be relatively low, with corresponding savings in battery use. Either unit may be so programmed to activate the alarm, or otherwise indicate when battery strength falls below a predetermined threshold.
The invention will now be further described, purely by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic illustration of one embodiment of the present invention.
As shown in the drawings, a protection system for protecting an article comprises a master protection unit 12, adapted to be located on the article 10, and a remote protection unit 14, adapted to be carried on a person.
The master protection unit 12 comprises a transmitter 16, a receiver 20, a timing device 24, a signal code recognition device 28, an alarm device such as an audible alarm device 32, and a control device 35. The remote protection unit comprises a transmitter 18, a receiver 22, a timing device 26, a signal code recognition device 30, an audible alarm device 34 and a control device 36.
The system operates as follows. When activated, the master transmitter 16 transmits a non-continuous digital coded interrogation signal 38, for example every 5 seconds. When the master protection unit and the remote protection unit are close to each other, this interrogation signal is received by the remote protection unit 14, recognised by the remote code recognition device 30 and, in response, the remote transmitter 18 transmits a non-continuous digital coded reply signal 40, having a different code from that of the interrogation signal 38, after a predetermined delay Dm measured by the remote timing device 26. The delay Dm may be for example 5 seconds. This reply signal is received by the master protection unit 12, and recognised by the master signal code recognition device 28.
However, when the master protection unit and the remote protection unit are beyond a certain distance from each other, the remote alarm device 34 is activated upon the failure of the remote protection unit 14 to receive the coded interrogation signal 38 at a signal strength above a predetermined level Sr after a predetermined period of time
Tri for example upon the failure of the remote protection unit 14 to receive the next expected coded interrogation signal 38. The predetermined time period Tr may be for example 7 seconds. The predetermined signal strength level Sr, may for example represent a distance between the master device and the remote device of about 10 metres.
Similarly, the master alarm device 32 is activated upon the failure of the master protection unit 12 to receive the coded reply signal 40 at a signal strength above a predetermined level Sm after a predetermined period of time Tm, of 7 seconds, for example upon the failure of the master protection unit to receive the next expected coded reply signal 40. The predetermined signal strength level Sm, may for example represent a distance between the master device and the remote device of about 10 metres.
The master protection unit 12 further comprises a manual adjusting device 42 for adjusting the predetermined level SM. the predetermined delay Dml and the predetermined time period Tm.
The remote protection unit 14 further comprises a manual adjusting device 44 for adjusting the predetermined level Sri the predetermined delay Dr and the predetermined time period Tr.
Usually, Sm, Dm, and Tm will be set to be substantially identical, respectively, to Sr, Dr and Tr.
