Abstract

A disposable liner (1) for fitting inside a nozzle (2) and extending over the threaded portion of the boss (3) of the discharge device to which the nozzle is screwed, said liner may be removed from the nozzle when it has been unscrewed from the boss of the discharge device. Undischarged thixotropic material (eg: mastic or adhesive) which would otherwise clog the nozzle during periods of disuse may therefore be removed with the liner.

Description

BLOCKAGEREMOVAL APPARATUS This invention relates to blockage removal apparatus and in particular, though not exclusively, to such apparatus for the removal of blockages contained within the detachable dispensing nozzles of tubular containers used for the storage of typically, thixotropic materials which set when in contact with air, such as mastic or adhesive.
Known containers comprise a tubular body, with an integral piston and a threaded dispensing boss, to which a detachable nozzle is attached. To allow the containers contents to flow into the nozzle, the end of the dispensing boss must first be cut off, the nozzle screwed in place and the piston propelled through the tubular member by known means. However it has been found that such an arrangement will not expel that part of the contents of the tubular container which is contained within said detachable nozzle.
Due to the setting nature of materials typically dispensed using apparatus of this type, said residue remaining in the detachable nozzle will over time form a blockage of said nozzie. Such that in circumstances where part of the contents has been left in the tubular container, for use at a later date. It cannot subsequently be dispensed without prior removal of said blockage.
Removal of such blockages is difficult, time consuming and can be messy where part of the contents remain in an unset state.
It is an object of the present invention to alleviate substantially the above mentioned problems.
According to the present invention there is provided blockage removal apparatus for use within the detachable dispensing nozzles of tubular containers used for air setting thixotropic materials, comprising a liner that fits inside the detachable nozzle adjacent to its outer wall, passing between said nozzle and the threaded dispensing boss of the tubular container and extending beyond said threaded boss, so that the portion of the material dispensed which remains within said nozzle is contained by said liner such that when the nozzle is unscrewed from said boss, the extended section of the liner may be used to pull the blockage from the nozzle.
A preferred embodiment will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows a longitudinal cross section view of a tubular container of the type used for storage of air contact setting thixotropic materials, with one embodiment of the Blockage Removal Apparatus fitted within the attached dispensing nozzle.
Referring to figure 1, Blockage Removal Apparatus according to the preferred embodiment comprises a thin plastic sleeve 1, fitted inside detachable dispensing nozzle 2, passing between nozzle 2 and threaded dispensing boss 3, and extending beyond the threaded section of nozzle 2, sufficient to allow the blockage removal apparatus to be gripped to facilitate its removal from nozzle 2.
Dispensing boss 3, is an integral part of tubular container 4, which has an internal piston 5. Movement of piston 5 towards dispensing boss 3 by known means, causes the contents 6, of tubular container 4, to flow through dispensing boss 3, once its closed end has been cut off, into sleeve 1, which is contained within and adjacent to the outer wall of dispensing nozzle 2. Both sleeve 1 and nozzle 2 are open ended, allowing contents 6 to be dispensed by known means.
When it is required to dispense only part of the contents 6, of tubular container 4, it is normal practice by those skilled in the art, to store container 4, with nozzle 2 attached. However over time that part of contents 6, which remains in nozzle 2 will progressively set, due to its contact with air at the open end of said nozzle, thereby causing a blockage which prevents the remainder of contents 6 being dispensed.
However this blockage may be removed easily, speedily and cleanly by unscrewing and detaching nozzle 2 and sleeve 1, from dispensing boss 3 and pulling sleeve 1 out of nozzle 2, thereby removing the blockage. Reassembly of nozzle 2, and a new sleeve 1 if required, to dispensing boss 3, allows further dispensing of contents 6, to take place.
Any suitable material may be used for the construction of sleeve 1.
