Abstract

A quality control sampling system for monitoring the weight, labelling and packaging of manufactured articles comprising means 4 to check the weight of a sampled article as well as means 5, 6 to check the visual characteristics of the article. The visual characteristics are detected by a barcode reader 6 and/or a video camera 5 and may include information about the packaging, labelling, price, date code or a captured image of the article. The system is preferably controlled by a computer so that once an article is placed on the weighing device 4 the operator of the system is prompted to carry out each of the various steps of the sampling process. The information gathered may be checked against centrally held computer records and stored for future retrieval.

Description

DESCRIPTION PRODUCTION QUALITY CONTROL SAMPLING AUTOMATE MONOTORING SYSTEM This invention relates to an automated monitoring system for production quality control sampling.
Quality Control sampling is a well known feature of process manufacturing environments. Sampling is carried out by human personnelto check that products, packaging and labelling meet the requirements laid down in the specification agreed by the manufacturer and customer.
The sampling process is prone to human error, especially where products are produced in catchweight, fixed and average weights, and where labels are affixed separately from initial packaging.
According to the present invention there is provided an automated monitoring system which checks all the labelling and the weight of the items being sampled, and records the results.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Fig 1 shows in perspective, the weighing cabinet with computer screen and remote computer keyboard Fig 2 shows in cutaway form the video camera and barcode scanner sited inside the cabinet.
In order to use the device, the product to be weighed and inspected is placed on the weighing scale (4), the barcode is scanned by a barcode reader (6), and video evidence of the sampling and product is collected by a camera (5). The keyboard (3) and screen (2) are used by the operative to run the software program which ensures that all the steps of the sampling are completed correctly.
The invention incorporates new software which checks information collected against central computer records, allows storage of the sample information, and facilitates access to the sample records by others within the maunufacturing plant and by external personnel.
