Abstract

In the event of emergency braking, the existing hazard warning lights are caused to flash at a high frequency in excess of 200 flashes per minute. The system is activated by a pressure pad fitted over the footbrake pedal and incorporating a switch operated by a sudden heavy foot pressure, eg. over 30 lb. according to the sensitivity of the vehicle brakes. The rapid flashing continues until the system is manually reset by operation of the hazard switch on the dashboard, and this operation also causes the hazard light flasher to be reset to the normal speed.

Description

j 2341736 This invention relates to an emeggency vehicle raRi:d flashing
light brake warning Wstem Rear vehicle brake lights are incorporated into all roadworthy vehicles and give a steady light when the footbrake is pressed lightly.
This routine system only gives warning of the brake being touched to indicate those behind to slow down.
11iis continuous light when the brake is touched does not give enough warning for sudden emergency stops with possible skidding. Neither does it warn those in front, or those approaching at the other side of the road of possible skidding, etc. On the motorways where high speeds and constant routine braking, usually on wet surfaces, the possibility of concertina crashes is always a problem with this non emergency brake warning light system 2 2- General Technical Details According to this invention there is provided a small pressure pad fitted over the footbrake pedal which when pressed hard during an emergency stop will complete an electrical circuit. This pressure requires usually over 30 lb pressure according to the sensitivity of the brakes concerned. The pressure pad circuit is connected to the hazard flashing warning system whereby all the indicators flash.
The existing hazard warning system will have its frequency of flashing increased to at least 240 flashes per minute to indicate to those behind the emergency stop and also indicate to those approaching, to slow down.
This new emergency system can be switched off manually by the triangular marked hazard switch on the dashboard. The rapid frequency will then be reset to normal indicator speed.
Essential Technical Details 1. Footbrake, pressure pad, incorporating an electrical switch and circuit connected to the existing hazard flashing light warning system.
2. Pressure pad circuit to be completed only by a sudden heavy foot pressure (over 30 lb according to the sensitivity of the car brakes).
3. The existing hazard flashing light system will be adjusted to have an increased frequency to at least 200 per minute when the pressure pad in applied.
4. The new emergency vehicle rapid flashing brake warning system will continue until turned off manually, when the normal indicator frequency will be reset.

Claims (1)

  1. Claim 1 Emergency vehicle rapid flashing light brake warning system, comprising a pressure pad over the footbrake, incorporating an electrical switch in circuit connected to the existing hazard warning flashing light system.
    Claim 2:
An emergency vehicle rapid flashing light brake warning system as in Claim 1, wherein the foot pressure pad is adjusted so that the incorporated electrical switch and circuit is only closed by heavy sudden foot pressure of over 30 lb or more depending on the sensitivity of the car brakes.
Claim 3 Emergency vehicle rapid flashing light brake warning system as in Claim 1 and Claim 2, wherein the frequency of the existing hazard warning flashing light system is increased to over 200 flashes a minute.
    - Claim 4:
An emergency vehicle rapid flashing light brake warning system as in Claim 1, Claim 2, Claim 3, wherein this new rapid flashing light system can be turned off manually and automatically resets the frequency down to the preemergency rate as a hazard warning flashing light system only.
