Abstract
233,752. Hope, V. Jan. 17, 1924. Fusible cut-outs.-In a bi-metallic electric fuse in which some of the wires B<2> are of a metal of high melting point such as copper, the remainder B<1> being of a metal of low melting point such as tin, the wires are woven, stitched, or otherwise incorporated in a flexible tape A of silk or like insulating fabric in such a manner that they are not stressed by stretching of the fabric, the ends of the tape being secured to contact plates C to which the wires are connected. The ends of the tape are secured by a clip C' having, a transverse slot C' co-operating with a transverse indentation C<1> in the contact plates C, the wire elements being secured to a terminal C<3> on the contact plates. The wires may be arranged in straight or wavy lines running longitudinally of the tape and the latter may be either in flat or tubular form. The wires are preferably twisted together at intervals along their length, the fabric at these points a<1> being removed by application of a caustic soda or acid solution. The invention may be applied to powder-filled cartridge fuses of the type described in Specification 198,383. Fig. 4 shows a cartridge fuse in which the tape A carrying the fuse wires is disposed within an insulating tubular casing D filled with a refractory powder such as marble dust, the contact, plates C passing through slotted caps d' on the ends of the casing D and being bent over as shown. The casing D is surrounded by an outer casing E provided at its ends with ferrules e<1> on to which are screwed caps e<3> carrying contact blades e<4> and spring-urged plungers e<6> which bear against the bent portions of the contact plates C.
