Abstract
A package comprises means 3, which may be blister pack compartments, for containing pills 4, coupled to means 11, preferably formed from a flexible skin, for containing a drink with which the pills can be taken. A further compartment 5 may be provided for a straw which is insertable into the container. Preferably, the package has a back board 1 which can be flexed to cause the drink to be expelled through the straw.

- 1 DESCRIPTION PACKAGE
The present invention relates to packaging for pills.
Traditionally, pills (such as pharmaceutical pills, vitamin pills etc.) have been packaged for sale in jars or bottles. More recently, blister packs have been used which provide numerous small compartments, each typically containing a single pill.
It is normally preferably for pharmaceutical and certain other pills to be taken with a drink, not only because this helps in swallowing the pill but also, among other reasons, because the pill may irritate the throat if swallowed on its own - this problem can arise with aspirin.
Persons needing to take a pill or pills (particularly when away from home, eg. at work or on a trip) can often find themselves without a drink to hand. One reason for this is that the bulk of most commercially packaged drinks - in cans, bottles, cartons etc. - makes them inconvenient to carry on the person. The volume of liquid in such drink containers is typically considerably more than is required solely for taking the pill or pills.
An object of the present invention is to provide improved packaging for pills, and in particular to overcome the above problem.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a package comprising means for containing at least one pill coupled to means for forming an initially closed container for a drink.
As sold, the package contains at least one pill, the container containing a drink and being closed.
Such a package can be sold in airports, petrol stations, stations etc. and can be of a size and weight which is convenient to carry on the person. It ensures that when the user wishes to take the pill(s), a drink is to hand.
It must be understood that the term "pills" as used herein encompasses tablets, lozenges, capsules etc., and covers not only pharmaceuticals in such forms, but also vitamin pills etc.
Where the pill(s) is (are) a pharmaceutical, the package may contain precisely one dose, avoiding waste and ensuring that the correct dosage is taken - this may be more than one pill.
The means for forming the container preferably comprise a flexible skin, most preferably of foil. This contributes little weight, can be flexible for packing and can form a resilient container for the drink. Such a container may be secured to a board which can be flexed or folded to deform the skin to thereby expel drink from the container.
Preferably, the container further comprises means for receiving a straw, the container having a region which is penetrable by the straw.
Specific embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Fig. 1 is a perspective illustration of a package embodying the present invention; Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same package; and C1 Fig. 3 is a side view of the package in use, having been partly folded.
The illustrated package comprises a backing board 1 which is provided with a pair of compartments 3 containing respective pharmaceutical pills 4 and with a further compartment 5 containing a straw. In this particular embodiment the package is in the form of a blister pack, having a flexible plastics sheet which is formed to define the compartments 3, 5. The rear face 7 of the backing board is at least partly foil coated, the foil closing the compartments. In known manner, the pills and the straw can be accessed by application of pressure to the front of the compartments, which causes them to deform and the contents to be ejected rearwardly through the foil, which is thereby ruptured. The package can be hung on a conventional retail display unit by means of a slot 9 formed through an upper region of the backing board 1.
Secured to the front face of the backing board 1 is a sealed drink container 11, formed in the illustrated embodiment from flexible foil and having a rear surface which is secured to the backing board (eg. by means of adhesive) and a bulbous front surface 13. The drink container 11 is adapted to be straightforwardly penetrated by the user so that the contents can be drunk. A region 15 is provided through which a straw can be inserted. This region may for example, by weakened to allow insertion of the straw.
The backing panel 1 has pre-formed fold lines. Three such lines are provided, being mutually parallel, and lateral to the backing board 1, the outer pair of lines being labelled 17 in Fig. 2 and the inner line 19. When drinking from the container 11, the user can, by pushing the two ends of the backing board together along the directions shown at 21 in Fig. 3, cause the backing board to fold at the pre-formed lines as shown in that figure, foiTning a backwardly projecting W". This compresses the package 11, helping to expel liquid through the straw, and also formes a depression in which liquid collects and from which it can therefore easily be collected in the straw.
Numerous constructional variations of the illustrated package are possible within the scope of the present invention. For example, the pills and/or the straw may be contained in a compartment formed by folding a net of cardboard. The backing board could itself be folded to form a box shaped compartment. The pills could be accessible through "tear off " perforated panels instead of a conventional blister pack.
