Abstract

A support structure 1 for plant growing media, eg a bag of compost, has a support 2 for the plant growing media and a plant support surface 4 separated from the surface 2. The structure 1 may be a channel-shaped container with the plant support surface 4 being lips of the container and the surface 2 at the bottom of the container. The container may have a drainage channel 5, channels 6 for engagement with waist height steel support tubes, and be of an insulating synthetic material. Thus the container can be used for plants requiring support of fruit carrying branches or trusses, especially strawberries, possibly also melons, aubergines, trailing flowers and any plant having a suspended growth habitat.

Description

2335339 CULTURE SUBSTRATE 1 C) is The invention is concerned with a
support structure for carrying containers of growth media (e.g. soil or compost). The invention is particularly useful for fruit plants such as strawberry plants which require support for fruit carrying branches or trusses.
The known systems consist of a shelf having a drainage channel for the run-off of surplus plant water. The shelf is typically made from a rigid material and simply supports the plant growing media (such as a bag of compost).
Fruit bearing plants such as strawberry plants have fruit located at the end of branches, the so-called "fruit truss-. If the fruit truss is not properly supported, the stem or branch kinks. This kinking prevents the flow of nutrients to the fruit truss and results in fruit having an unpleasant flavour, or which does not grow properly.
The known systems support fruit trusses by providing support elements adjacent to and slightly above the growth media. These are typically parallel pipes or suspended netting devices.
The present invention provides a support structure as set out in claim 1. Preferred features of the invention are defined in the dependent claims.
The support structure of the present invention does not require separate support pipes and is therefore considerably easier to set-up and operate. There are therefore significant cost advantages over the known systems. A preferred embodiment of the invention uses an insulating synthetic material such as styrafoam. This has 0 the added advantage that the supporting material is always at a constant temperature.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will be described with reference to Figure 1 which shows a crosssection of a support structure embodying the present invention.
The channel-shaped structure 1 has an essentially flat inner surface 2 and two inclined up-standing walls 3. The side-walls 3 each include a support lip 4.
Growth media such as a bag of compost is placed inside the channel-shaped support structure 1 on the support surface 2. Fruit trusses of fruit plants in the growth media are then supported by the lip 4 at the top of the side-walls 3.
The support structure is provided with a drainage channel 5 and may include location and/or support slots or channels 6 for engagement by, and support on, steel support tubes. The support tubes may be arranged above the ground at waist height so as to keep the growth media and the plants being grown therein separated from any floorlevel contaminants, and locate the plants at a height which makes for easy picking.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the support structure is made of moulded styrafoam. Alternatively, the support structure could be made from any moulded inert plastics material. Materials having low thermal conductivity are preferred as they will not conduct heat to, or away from, plants and growth media supported within the support structure.
The invention is particularly suitable for cultivation of strawberry plants. Possible plants which would benefit from cultivation using the present invention 1 i - 3 include melons, aubergines, trailing flowers and any plant having a suspended growth habitat.
