Abstract

A cavity tray (10) has a stepped base (16) such that it may be built into the brickwork of a wall (14) against which an inclined conservatory roof (12) is to abut. The cavity tray has a depending skirt (18) below the outer edge of the steps and an upstanding flange (20) which extends upwardly and inwardly of the inner side of the outer leaf (40). The upstanding fl ange thus acts to collect water that has penetrated the outer leaf and redirects it out of the brickwork and on to the conservatory roof.

DESCRIPTION
This invention concerns construction of conservatory roofs and, in particular, means for preventing ingress of water to a conservatory attached to a structural wall.
When conservatories are constructed against a structural wall, flashing is provided to prevent rain water penetrating between the wall and the roof The flashing is in the form of usually lead sheets that are cemented in between the brick courses and bent to overlie the roof by about 6 - 12 inches. The flashing is effective to a certain extent but does not help with rain water penetration of the brickwork above the flashing. Rain water that penetrates the brickwork can travel behind the brickwork to below the flashing and emerge under the roof and hence into the conservatory affecting plasterwork, decoration and the like.
An object of this invention is to provide means for preventing rain water ingress to a conservatory past its roof.
According to this invention there is provided a tray to be built into brickwork against which a conservatory roof is to be abutted, the tray having means for collecting water penetrating the brickwork and directing the rain water back out of the brickwork above the conservatory roof and onto the roof.
In a preferred embodiment, the tray of the invention comprises a stepped base having a depending skirt on one side and an upstanding flange on its other side, the flange preferably having at least its upper part angled away from the stepped base.
2 The base preferably has its steps sized so as to correspond to standard brick length. The steps of the tray are preferably transversely profiled, especially by way of grooves, to provide on the one hand mating surfaces for the bricks andlor mortar between the bricks and on the other hand channels or the like for diverting water away.
The tray of the invention is preferably moulded from plastics material, such as high density polyethylene, although any other suitable plastics material may be used.
In use a tray of the invention will be cut to length to match the conservatory roof and built into the brickwork so as to be just above the roof. Water penetrating the brickwork above i the roof will be caught by the tray as it travels downwards and diverted out of the brickwork by the tray.
This invention will now be finiher described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a cavity tray according to the invention; Figure 2 is a plan view from above of the cavity tray of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a plan view from below of the cavity tray of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a perspective view of part of the cavity tray of Figure 1; Figure 5 is an enlarged view of one end of the cavity tray of Figure 1; and Figure 6 shows the cavity tray of Figure 1 installed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, a cavity tray 10 for use in preventing water ingress into a conservatory 12 abutting a wall 14 is provided as a one piece unit that can be cut to size to suit the conservatory roof width.
3 The tray is moulded in one-piece from plastics material, such as high density polyethylene, although any other suitable plastics material may be used.
The cavity tray 10 has a stepped base 16, steps 17 being sized to correspond to standard brick length. On one side the base 16 has a depending skirt 18 and the other side an upstanding flange 20.
The steps 17 of the base 16 have a vertical wall 22 and a horizontal wall 24. The horizontal wall 24 of each step has three transverse grooves 26, one at the junction of a wall 24 of one step with the vertical wall 22 of the next step up and the other two in the mid-region of the wall 24.
The depending skirt 18 extends below a notional line joining the junctions of the walls 22 and 24 of adjacent steps and has it bottom edge parallel to said notional line.
The upstanding flange 20 has a first part 28 that is at right angles to the stepped base and has a top edge coinciding with a notional line joining the leading edge of each step and a second part 30 extending from said top edge and at an angle thereto away from the steps.
In use the cavity tray is cut to a derived length corresponding to the depth of the roof with which it is to be associated. The cavity tray is then built into the outer leaf 40 of the brickwork (see Figure 6) to be above the roof. As can be seen rain water entering the brickwork above the roof cannot penetrate the cavity tray and the combination of the angled flange 30 and the grooves 26 will divert the water out of the brickwork onto the roof where it will run away to the roof s guttering.

A tray for building into the brickwork against which a conservatory roof is to be abutted, having means for collecting water penetrating the brickwork and directing the water back out of the brickwork above the roof and onto the roof 2. A tray to be built into the brickwork of a conservatory wall as claimed in claim 1 in which the tray comprises a stepped base having a depending skirt on one side and an upstanding flange on its other side.
A tray as claimed in claim 2 in which the flange has at least an upper part angled away from the stepped base.
4. A tray as claimed in claim 2 or 3 in which the stepped base has its steps sized so as to correspond to standard brick length.
5. A tray as claimed in claim 2, 3, or 4 wherein the top surfaces of the steps are transversely profiled.
6. A tray as claimed in claim 5 wherein the transverse profiling of the steps is effected by a plurality of spaced grooves.
7. A tray as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 6 wherein the upstanding flange has a first part at right angles to the stepped base and a top edge coinciding with a notional line joining the leading edge of each step and a second part extending from said top edge and at an angle thereto away from the steps.
A tray as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 7 wherein the depending skirt extends below a notional line joining the junctions of the walls of adjacent steps, and has its bottom edge parallel to said notional line.
9. A tray as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 8 wherein said tray is moulded in one piece from plastics material.
10. A tray as claimed in claim 9, wherein the plastics material is high density polyethylene.
11. A tray cavity substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
