Abstract

A tile 1 comprises a main body portion 2 preferably made of wood which has at least one end formed or profiled so as to have an upper, overhanging portion 5 and a lower, spaced apart, lip portion 6, a slot or recess 7 being formed between the upper, overhanging portion 7 and the lower, spaced apart, lip portion 6. The lower or bottom end 4 of the tile 1 has an upper, overhanging portion 5 which is thick relative to the lower lip portion 6, while the top or upper end 8 of the tile has an overhanging portion 9 which is thin relative to a spaced apart lower lip portion 10. The profile of the upper and lower ends 4 and 8 of the tile 1 permit straightforward and efficient engagement of tiles one with the other to form a roof, wall or surface of a desired construction. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements In or Relating to Tiles This invention relates to tiles and in particular to wooden tiles or shingles and to a plurality thereof, which when combined together can be used for forming a roof, or wall of a building or can be used for sheathing.
Up until this time various tiles have been known which usually overlap one another or abutt against one another to provide engagement on a roof or wall. The present invention sets out to provide a wooden tile which utilises a readily available material, and which at the same time provides a means of interlocking and engaging the tiles one with the other, in a secure and substantially weather-proof manner.
It is an object of this invention to provide a straight forward and efficient tile or shingle.
Other objects of the invention become apparent from the following description.
As indicated above, the invention relates to a tile or shingle, or to a plurality thereof, when engaged together form the covering or a roof or wall of a building. For the purposes of description and definition however, reference will be made throughout the specification and claims, to "a tile".
According to one aspect of this invention, there is provided a tile including a main body portion having at least one end formed or profiled so as to have an upper overhanging portion and a lower, spaced apart, lip portion; a slot or recess being formed therebetween.
According to a further aspect of this invention, there is provided a tile including a main body portion; a lower end of the tile being formed or profiled so as to have an upper, overhanging, portion and a lower, spaced apart lip portion; a slot or recess being formed therebetween and the upper overhanging portion being thick relative to the lower lip portion; an upper end of the tile being formed or profiled so as to have an overhanging portion and a lower, spaced apart, lip portion; a slot or recess being formed therebetween; the upper overhanging portion being thin relative to the lower lip portion.
This invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tile according to one form of the invention.
Figure 2 shows an exploded side view of tiles according to one form of the invention.
The tiles according to this invention are constructed of a readily available material, such as for example, wood. Other materials could however be used if desired.
The tiles 1 include a main body portion 2 which has an upper face 3 which can be profiled or treated as desired, to provide a desired appearance.
At a bottom or lower end 4 of the tile the main body portion is formed or profiled so that an upper, overhanging portion 5 is provided and a spaced apart lower lip portion 6 provided. A slot or recess 7 preferably running with width of the tile, and being substantially parallel to the transverse axis of the tile 1 is provided between the upper overhanging portion 5 and the lower lip portion 6.
In the preferred form of the invention as shown in the accompanying drawings, the upper overhanging portion 5 extends outwardly for a greater distance than does the lower lip portion 6.
In addition, the upper overhanging portion 5 is thicker than, and relative to, the lower lip portion 6.
The upper end 8 of the tile 1 is preferably formed or profiled with an upper overhanging portion 5 and a lower lip portion 6 however in the case of the upper end 8 of the tile 1 or top end of the tile 1 , the upper overhanging portion 9 is thin relative to the lower lip portion 10 and the lower lip portion 10 extends outwardly for a greater distance than the upper overhanging portion 9.
A slot or recess 11 is provided between the upper overhanging portion 9 and the lower lip portion 10 and runs the width of and is preferably substantially parallel to, the transverse axis of the tile 1.
In use, and with reference to Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings, when it is desired to engage tiles one with the other, the upper overhanging portion 9 at the upper end 8 of a tile 1 is engaged within the slot or recess 7 running between the upper overhanging portion 5 and the lower lip portion 6 provided at the lower or bottom end 4 of the tile 1 (such as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings). This then provides for a secureweather tight and substantially stepped engagement, in which the tiles are securely engaged one with the other in a manner which has been found to be secure and weather proof.
The tiles are preferably mounted on battens or purlins which span a roof, and which will for example pass under that area between the join between the two tiles as indicated by 'X' in Figure 2 of the drawings.
Suitable securing means such as for example nails, staples and the like can pass through the tile 1 adjacent the joins therebetween, but always adjacent the lower end 4 of the tile and into an adjacent purlin or rafter. In this way, securing means will not pass through the upper end 8 of the tiles 1 which will be securely engaged by means of the engagement hereinbefore described. If it is desired to remove the tiles for replacement, repair or the like, it is only necessary to remove the securing means in the form of nails or staples from one end of the tile.
The means of engagement hereinbefore described, has been found to be particularly advantageous and it will be appreciated that in a building construction, the roof, walls or any other surface can be formed from a plurality of interlocked or inter-engaged tiles, such as described hereinbefore by way of example.
This invention has been described by way of example and improvements and modifications may be made thereto without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended
