Abstract

A mat is provided in which the mat has a plurality of projections (2) for engaging a floor. The mat is impregnated with an antibacterial agent.

Description

FLOOR COvsRTNG The present invention relates to a floor covering. Such a covering is particularly suitable for. use as a mat in a bathroom or changing area.
Ceramic floor tiles, of the type typically found in shower areas, changing rooms and bathrooms, have a tendency to feel cold and also become slippery when wet.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a floor covering comprising a layer of water resistant material with a plurality of anti-slip elements formed on a first side thereof.
It is thus possible to provide a floor covering which can be placed on the floor so as to reduce the risk of a person slipping.
Preferably, the layer of water resistant material is an elastomeric layer.
Preterably, the material feels warm when touched. An example of a suitable material is neoprene.
Preferably, the first side of the floor covering is provided with a plurality of pmples or other projections for fictionally engaging with a floor. The projections can also couple with the fibres of a carpet to prevent movement of the floor covering in a carpeted environment.
Preferably, the layer of water-resistant material is treated with, or impregnated with, an anti-bacterial agent.
Alternatively, or additionally, the material itself may be selected to exhibit bactericidal properties.
Advantageously, a second side of the layer of water-resistant material may be printed with a message design. The message may be a safety warning in a textural or graphic form.
According to a second aspect ofthe present invention, there is provided a floor covering comprising a layer of material impregnated with a bactericidal agent.
The present invention will further be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure la and Figure ib show the underside of two mats constituting the embodiments of the present invention; and Figure 2a and Piatire 2b show the upper surfaces of mats constituting embodiments of the present invention.
As shown in the accompanying figures. the floor cov.rin may be cut to form a mat. The mat comprises a layer of neoprene having a plurality of projections (2) formed on the undersurface thereof which, in use, form areas of increased frictional contact with a floor beneath the mat. The projections may be in the form of pimples, such that their vertical height is approximately equivalent to their diameter. The projections (2) may be arranged with a uniform density.
As shown in Figures 2a and 2b, the upper surface of the mat may be printed with a message or a symbol. The manufacture of coloured neoprene and the printing of messages thereon is well-known in the art.
The neoprene is impregnated with an anti-bacterial agent in order to keep the mat hygienic. A suitable anti-bacterial agent is sold under the tradename "HICROBAN". However, other suitable agents having the ability to remain in the mat and to avoid being leached out by water, will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
It is thus possible to provide an anti-slip, anti-bacterial mat for use in changing rooms, bathrooms, or the like.
