Abstract

A cutting tool having a body 10, a handle 20, guide means 12, 14 for engaging mutually perpendicular surfaces such as a floor and a wall, and a means 16 for mounting a blade 18 so that the blade extends towards a junction line 22 of the perpendicular surfaces. The blade mounting 16 may be rotatable to adjust the position of the cut. The mounting means may be arranged to hold a knife (30, see Fig. 2) by way of the knife handle. The cutting tool may be used to cut floor coverings such as carpet or linoleum.

Description

IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO CUTTING TOOLS This invention is concerned with a cutting tools, and is particularly concerned with a tools for cutting floor coverings such as carpets and linoleum.
The laying of a floor covering, hereinafter referred to simply as a covering, is a task requiring considerable skill and experience, but even the most skilled fitter finds it difficult to cut the edge of the covering so that the covering lies neatly in the corner between the floor and the wall. The basic reason for this is that the covering, ready for cutting, cannot be located close to the floor/wall corner but always follows a radius between the plane of the floor and the plane of the wall.
Not only can the fitter not see the corner and must guess where to cut but also the carpet is unsupported making an accurate straight line cut difficult.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate these difficulties.
The present invention is a tool comprising a body for mounting a cutting blade, a first guide and a second guide on the body for engaging respective, mutually perpendicular planes which meet at a junction line, and a mount on the body for mounting a cutting blade so that the blade extends towards the junction line.
Preferably the guides define the respective planes.
The mount may be rotatable in the body about an axis substantially parallel to the junction line.
The mount may be adapted to secure the handle of a cutting tool.
Preferably the mount is adapted to secure a cutting blade.
A handle may extend from the mount.
The present invention is also a tool as defined in the last four preceding paragraphs in combination with a cutting blade.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig.l is a perspective view of a first embodiment of the present invention; and Fig.2 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of the present invention.
Referring now to Fig.l, a cutting tool according to the present invention comprises a body 10, two guides 12 and 14, a mount 16 for a cutting blade 18, and a handle 20.
The guides 12 and 14 lie in and define respective planes which are mutually perpendicular and which meet at a junction line 22, the guides 12 and 14 both extending away from the junction line 22.
The mount 16 is mounted in the body 10 for rotation about an axis which is substantially parallel to the junction line 22 and is provided with means for releasably securing the cutting blade 18 so that it extends from the mount towards the junction line 22. The means for securing the blade is conventional and is not illustrated. The handle 20 extends from the body away from the cutting blade at a convenient angle.
To cut a covering to fit the edge of the floor at the bottom of a wall the covering is cut oversize so that it curls up out of the plane of the floor against the wall. The fitter tucks the covering into the corner so that it forms a radius between the floor and the wall, the size of the radius being a function of the stiffness of the covering. To cut the covering the fitter rotates the mount to locate the blade at the desired point, places the tool with the guides in contact with the covering on the floor and against the wall, and then draws the tool along the wall to cut the covering uniformly along the length of the wall.
It should be noted that the correct place for the blade is above the mid point of the covering's radius by an amount which depends upon the size of the radius. The rotatable mount not only allows the fitter to adjust the blade for a cut in one direction, e.g. to his right, but also allows him to adjust the blade for a cut in the opposite direction; also the same tool can be used by both right and left handed fitters.
The embodiment of Fig.2 differs from that of Fig.l in that the mount is adapted to receive a conventional cutting tool such as a Stanley knife (STANLEY is a Registered Trade Mark) comprising a cutting blade 28 and a handle 30. In this embodiment also the mount is rotatable relative to the body 10 to allow the same adjustment of the blade as indicated in the drawing.
As shown in Fig.2 the cutting tool is inserted longitudinally into the mount and is simply embraced by the mount 16. This is generally satisfactory as the fitter's hand on the handle 30 retains the tool in position, but if desired means may be provided to secure the tool in the mount.
The guides may take different forms such as wheels or rollers.
