Abstract
A tool for tightening and loosing wing nuts 30 screwed on a bolt 20 comprises at one end a main body portion 1 including a bore 10 for receiving the bolt 20, together with a slot 41 adapted to receive the wings 31 of the wing nut 30. At the other end, means 2 is provided to enable driving of the tool, preferably comprising a port for cooperation with a ratchet or wrench (figures 4,5). The bore 10 preferably includes a conical end section 43 to accommodate the body of the wing nut 30. The slot 41 may have angled faces (52, figure 6) so that an even distribution of pressure is applied on the wing nut when it is being tightened or loosened using the tool.
Description
"Wing Nut tool"
This invention relates to a wing nut tool specifically designed for the tightening and loosening of a wing nut.
There is no known tool designed for this purpose. At present the only way of tightening or loosening a wing nut is by the use of pliers, or a similar instrument.
This results in the wings being distorted, which both ruins aesthetic appearance of the wing nut and weakens the strength of the wings. The wings can even be sheared off, which renders the wing nut useless and results in the nut itself being extremely difficult to remove from the screw. This, in turn, prevents the wing nut from being reused.
An object of the present invention is to obviate or mitigate the above disadvantages. Due to its design the wing nut tool overcomes the above problems. It fits over the bolt and has a conical hole, and wing nut sleeves which take up the shape of the wing nut thus applying an even pressure to the wings of the wing nut when tightening or loosening it.
According to the present invention there is provided a wing nut tool for tightening and loosening a wing nut, the wing nut having drive means at one end and at the other end being provided with a through bore to receive a bolt on which the wing nut is screwed, the tool being provided with slot means adapted to receive the wings of the wing nut.
Preferably the through bore is provided with a conical end section to accommodate the body of the wing nut.
Preferably also, the slot has angled faces allowing an even distribution of pressure to be applied when using the tool for tightening or loosening the wing nuts.
The means for providing the torque for turning the tool is by a ratchet.
The means for attaching the ratchet to the tool is by an adaptor slot in the tool itself.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which
Fig 1 is a front elevation view illustrating
a wing nut tool made in accordance with the
invention, in position over a wing nut;
Fig 2 is a side elevation view of wing nut tool of
Fig 1;
Fig 3 is an underneath plan view to a larger
scale of the wing nut tool of Figs 1 and 2;
Fig 4 is a top plan view of the wing nut tool
of Figs 1 and 2;
Fig 5 illustrates an alternative embodiment; and
Fig 6 is a top plan view of a modified embodiment.
Referring to the drawings and in particular Fig 1 and
Fig 2, a wing nut tool of the present invention comprises a body portion 1 provided with a hexagonal adaptor 2, to which a drive means can be attached.
The body portion 1 is preferably provided with an internal blind bore 10 adapted to receive an elongated screw 20, onto which there is fitted a wing nut 30 which is to be removed.
At the opposite end of the body portion 1, there is provided a boss 40, which has a conical hole 43, this is angled the same as the base of the wing nut, thus creating the mounting point between the tool and the wing nut. A through slot 41 engages the faces of the wings 31.
In use, the tool is placed over the wing nut 30 and tightened, preferably using the drive means 2. This rotation causes the walls 42 of the slot 41 to engage the faces of the wings 31 of the wing nut 30 effecting rotation of the wing nut 30 in the desired direction.
Due to its design, the tool whilst rotating, distributes an even pressure to the complete face of the wings 31 of the wing nut 30. This is mainly due to the design of the through slot 51 and the angled divergent walls 52, as illustrated in Fig 6. This design enables a more full contact with the faces of the wing nut 30 during rotation.
Modifications and improvements may be incorporated without departing from the scope of the invention.
