Description

P74162 GB IMPROVENENTS IN OR RELATING TO DISPLAY PACKAGING The present
invention relates to display packaging.
2332421 At present a very wide range of goods and products are supplied by manufacturers to retailers in a variety of forms of packaging. The goods can be simply supplied packed into cardboard boxes or for example shrinkwrapped onto cardboard trays. In such situations the retailer has to remove the external packaging and place the individual goods for display on the shelves of the store.
It is also known for goods to be supplied to retailers by the manufacturers in cardboard cartons so that the retailer can simply place the packed cartons on the shelves for display purposes. The customer then only has to remove the goods from the carton and the next item is immediately available for sale. The card cartons are of a relatively high value in that they are usually printed with eye catching graphics including information relating to the product, the manufacturer of the product and the manufacturer's trade mark or trade marks. However, these relatively high value card cartons are not particularly strong and the cartons are subject to damage in transit between the manufacturer and the retailer. Also the cartons are not sufficiently strong for them to be stacked one on top of the - 2 other, which in some retailing environments is advantageous.
The present invention seeks to provide display packaging in which the relatively high value carton is provided with a relatively low value but relatively high strength form of protection.
Accordingly the present invention provides an item of display packaging comprising an inner carton and an outer open bottomed casing, the casing enclosing the carton and the casing and the carton being releasably secured together.
The casing can be provided with one or more removable tabs and the carton and the casing can be secured together in the region of the removable tabs.
The carton can include a flap which when the carton is erected extends from the f ront to the rear of the carton so as to provide a sloping surface upon which goods can be arranged.
The casing can have a removable portion, the remainder of the casing remaining secured to the carton, enabling the items of packaging to be stacked one on another.
The carton can be formed from solid board or single or double faced corrugated board and the casing can be formed from single or double faced corrugated fibre board.
The carton can be printed with information relating to the products displayed in the carton e. g. the nature of the products, the manufacturer's details and the manufacturer's trade marks.
The casing can be plain or can also be provided with printing if required.
The present invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 shows a blank of one f orm of carton of the display packaging according to the present invention; Figure 2 shows a blank of one f orm of casing of the display packaging according to the present invention; Figure 3 shows the carton and casing of Figures 1 and 2 secured together; Figure 4 shows a blank of a further form of carton to that shown in Figure 1; Figure 5 shows a blank of a further form of casing to that shown in Figure 2; Figure 6 shows the carton and casing blanks of Figures 4 and 5 attached together; Figures 7, 8 and 9 show respectively side and end elevations and 4 an underneath plan view of the erected carton f rom the blank shown in Figure 1; Figures 10, 11 and 12 show respectively side and end elevations and a top plan view of the casing from the blank shown in Figure 2; Figures 13, 14 and 15 show respectively side and end elevations and a top plan view of the casing from the blank shown in Figure 5; and Figure 16 shows a modified form of carton blank to those shown in Figures 1 and 4.
Referring particularly to Figures 1, 2 and 3, there is shown a carton blank (10), as casing blank (12) and an assembly (14) of the carton and casing blanks.
The carton blank (10) comprises a front (16), two sides (18, 20) and a back (22) which each have respective flaps (16A, 18A, 20A, 20B, 22A).
Each of the flaps (18A, 20A) have sub-flaps (18AA, 20AA) and the flaps (16A, 18A, 20A, 22A) are secured or co-operate together to form the base of the carton (10) as will be described below. The flap (20B) enables the side (20) to be joined to the back (22) of the carton when the carton is folded.
A casing (12) which is f ormed f rom, f or example, single or double faced corrugated board, and has a front (24), two sides (26, 28) and a back (30). The front sides and back each have respective flaps (24A, 26A, 28A, 30A, 30B).
Each side (26, 28) is provided with a removable tab (32, 34). Each tab includes a hinged flap which can be gripped between thumb and forefinger for removal from the respective side as the remainder of the flap is only attached to the side at discrete locations.
Referring to Figure 3 there is shown the casing blank (12) positioned over the carton blank (10) and secured to the carton blank at locations (X), that is under the removable tabs (32, 34).
The blanks (10, 12) can be assembled in a conventional packaging manufacturing machine or one specifically adapted to do so. Initially the carton and casing blanks are brought together as shown in Figure 3, an amount of adhesive being provided on either or both of the blanks in both of the regions (X).
Adhesive is applied to the flaps (16A, 22A) and/or the sub-flaps (18AA, 20AA). The assembly is folded to make a rectangular form of packaging with the f lap (16A) overlaying and being attached to the sub-f lap (20AA) and the f lap (22A) overlaying and being attached to the sub-f lap (18AA). Adhesive is also applied to flap (20B, 30B) so that upon assembly the side (20) of the carton - 6 will be attached to the back (22) and the back (30) of the casing will be attached to the side (28).
Figures 7, 8 and 9 show the assembled and erected carton (10), whilst Figures 10, 11 and 12 show the erected casing (12).
It will be appreciated that when an assembly (14) is erected the casing (12) which is open bottomed encloses the carton (10) and is attached to the carton (10) in the regions (X) of the removable tabs (32, 34).
The provision of the casing protects the carton (10) and also the goods of the carton (10) in transit from the manufacturer to the retailer. Upon receipt by the retailer the outer casing (12) is removed from the carton (10) by tearing away the tabs (32, 34) and the remainder of the casing can be simply lifted from the carton and disposed of as required.
The carton and the goods contained can then be displayed as required by the retailer.
It will be appreciated that the relatively high value carton and the printing thereon will have been protected by the casing (12) and will therefore be in pristine condition for use by the retailer.
Referring to Figures 4, 5 and 6, there are shown further forms of the carton and casing blanks to those shown in Figures 1 and 2, - 7 and Figure 6 shows the assembly of the carton and casing blanks shown in Figures 4 and 5. In these figures, the parts of the carton and casing which are common to the blanks shown in Figures 1 and 2 have been given similar references. Referring to Figure 4 there is shown a carton blank (110) having identical features to those shown on the carton blank (10) except for the provision of a further flap (116B).
Referring to Figure 5 there is shown a casing blank (112) having identical features to those shown on the casing blank (12) except for the following features. The sides (126, 128) are provided with cut lines (Y); the flap (124A) is shortened and has a cutout (132); and the flaps (126A, 128A) are modified so that each flap has a sub-flap (126AA, 128AA) and each flap (126A, 128A) has a cut-out (134).
The carton and casing blanks are secured together as shown in Figure 6 in the same way as referred to in Figure 3.
The assembly (114) is erected in a similar fashion to that described with reference to Figure 3 except that the flap (116B) now extends in a sloping manner from the front to the rear of the carton (110) as shown in Figure 7.
Also, as shown in Figures 13, 14 and 15, when the outer casing is erected the recesses (132, 134) combine to form an opening (136), the sub-flaps (126AA, 128AA) are folded over and are fastened e.g. glued to the flap (124A).The top of the box is held 8 together by the flaps (126A, 128A) being fastened e.g. glued to the flap (130A).
Again it will be appreciated that the casing (112) contains the erected carton (110) and is only attached to the carton by means of the adhesive in the region of the removable tabs (132, 134).
The retailer on receiving such packaging from the manufacturer or distributor can simply remove the whole of the casing from the inner carton by tearing off the tabs (132, 134). The whole of the casing can then be removed by the retailer for display of the contained goods.
Alternatively, if the retailer wishes to stack the packaged goods one on top of the other the front part of the casing (112) can be removed by tearing along the lines (Y).
Upon removal of the front portion of the casing the customer will still be able to see the goods but the retailer can then stack a number of packages one on top of the other.
The provision of the flap (116B) enables packaged goods of certain types such as packets containing powdered materials e.g. soups and sauces or packets of sweets to remain upright. It will be appreciated that provision of a sloping surface enables such goods to be arranged so that they tend to remain upright rather than falling over when one item is removed from the carton.
It will also be appreciated that the carton (110) can be used with the casing (12) or the casing (112) and similarly the carton (10) can be used with the casing (112) or the casing (12) as required.
Referring to Figure 16, a carton blank (210) is shown which is similar to the blanks (10) and (110) shown in Figures 1 and 4 respectively. The blank (210) has a front (216), two sides (218, 220) and back (222). The blank has flaps corresponding to the similar flaps shown in Figures 1 and 4 and the blank is assembled in a similar way to that described with reference to Figures 1 and 4.
The blank (210) also has two removable tabs (224), one in each side (218, 220). When assembling the blank (210) with an outer blank similar to the blanks (12, 112) adhesive is applied to the tabs (224), the tabs being located in the region of the corresponding tabs (32, 34) and (132, 134) of the outer blank. Thus when the outer carton is separated from the inner carton upon operation of the tabs (32, 34) and (132, 134), the tabs (224) will come away cleanly from the inner carton.
The carton can be formed from solid board or single or double faced corrugated board whilst the casing can be formed from single or double faced corrugated fibre board.
Both the inner carton and the outer casing can be formed from any shape of blank provided that when assembled and erected they are - 10 secured together by removable means enabling the open bottomed casing to be wholly or partially removed from the carton.
The provision of the removable front to the outer casing is optional. The advantage of such a removable front is that packaging can be stacked one on top of the other and the goods contained can still be displayed.
Also, the provision of the flap (116) is optional and will only be required where the goods contained are relatively loose in nature as opposed to being tins or boxes, so that such goods remain displayed when an item is removed.
