Abstract
A water paint composition comprises a particulate base material and a binder, wherein the binder is a water-based acrylic resin emulsion. Typically, the emulsion is a non-plasticised copolymer of vinyl acetate and a long chain branched ester. The particulate material may be chalk, lithopone, or titanium dioxide. The composition may further incorporate a wetting agent, a silicate, a defoamer, glycol, ammonia, Calgon (RTM), a cellulose gelling agent, and an antibacterial agent. A vegetable and/or mineral oil may also be included. It is intended that the composition can be washed without significant loss of the binder.
Description
.DTD:
-I- WATER PAINT CO}!POSITION 2331755 This invention relates to a water pain composition. Such a paint composition is commonly referred to as a distemper or whitewash. A water paint is to be distinguished from an oil bound emulsion paint since the latter is intended to provide a surface coverage effect where brush marks or streaks will tend to be hidden. An emulsion paint is not usually required to be applied at such a thickness that the texture of the surface will be apparent although, of course, so-called matt and silk finishes are available.
.DTD:
The water paint composition is intended to produce an even matt surface having an almost velvety texture which will in addition be able to show a streaking or distressed effect when viewed on a larger scale. Consequently, the water paint needs to have a high solids content such that when a surface coating has dried, the resulting paint layer instead of being just a film will leave a deposit of appreciable thickness.
.DTD:
Water paint compositions having this property have been known for centuries and they usually contain a particulate base material (such as powdered chalk or lithopone), and a binding material (glue or size) dispersed in water. A colour pigment is added. The proportion of glue may need to be adjusted so that when a paint layer has dried it will not be possible to rub off the paint using finger pressure alone. Since the solid constituent of the paint composition is of a _L--S --=- - -- -- -- -- The water paint composition will additionally contain a base material chosen from a group including powdered chalk, lithopone and titanium dioxide. The composition may further include a wetting agent, a silicate, a defoamer ingredient, glycol, ammonia, Calgon and a cellulose gelling agent. These ingredients are present to improve the properties of the composition by giving better flow characteristics and assisting in the production of a continuous paint film on the surface to be painted.
.DTD:
According to a further embodiment, the water paint composition includes an oil. This has been found to ive an improvement in the appearance of the painted surface after the paint has dried. One oil that has been found to be suitable is a vegetable oil such as linseed oil. The oil ingredient may additionally include a mineral oil such as paraffin oil. Particularly, when a vegetable oil is present in the composition this may be accompanied by an anti-bacterial aent to reduce the development of microorganisms in the resulting aqueous system.
.DTD:
Preferably, the water paint composition has the following constituents for a batch of four kilos:
.DTD:
weight in grams Water Chalk 150 - 250 Silicate (salt of silicic acid) 80 _,-_ ---- - i " -.............. - - -..................... i----- -- % will now be described.
.DTD:
For making up a four kilo batch of the water paint composition, the following constituents were taken:
.DTD:
weight in grams Water Chalk 200 Silicate (salt of silicic acid)80 Defoamer iO Glycol i0 Antibacterial Agent I0 Ammonia 3 Calgon 5 Wetting Agent 6 Acrylic Resin 720 Titanium Dioxide 400 Cellulose CMC 270 Paraffin Oil 2 Linseed Oil 2 Pigment The ingredients were mixed together to form a paint base which could be stored under stable conditions in a sealed continsr. When required for use as a paint, the base mixture was diluted with water so that a medium having a suitable consistency to be applied to a surface by a brushing technique friendly product. There is virtually no solvent odour to be detected in use of the paint.
.DTD:
The preferred choice of acrylic resin also acts as a ood binder which enables the dry paint layer to adhere to a well surface and be tolerant of wiping with a damp cloth without a significant removal of paint pigment from the surface.
.DTD:
The proportion of linseed oil present in the composition eect helps to promote the required sreskv or 'distressed' = in the surface texture of the paint layer.
.DTD:
The choice ot pigment to be incorporated in tie paint base was made frown a range of organic pigments obtained from Clariant uningue S.A., France, Bayer Limited, U.K. and Degussa, Gernany. The use of organic pigments uas preferred because these are low in ny heavy etai content and thus are unlikely to be consiiered hazardous from the Health an4 Safety point of view.
.DTD:
The water paint composition of the invention was devised to provi4e an environrental!y friendly preparation that vould have ood flow,ro-_rs in tie,sr-diluted....... condition and rovide a continuous fi!n layer on a painted surface without requirinZ the 1resence of any organic solvent. Although the application by brush is reco::nended to achieve the preferred te':tured effect on the >aint surface, it is alternatively possible to apply the paint by roller vhich gives a sonewnt batter surface coverage but promotes a matt flat texture which .CLME:
