Abstract

Dry powders redispersible in water are prepared by a process which comprises atomizing an aqueous paint composition containing up to 65% by weight solids, said solids comprising 20 to 80% by weight of a film-forming resin binder said resin being a vinyl ester resin, an acrylic ester resin, an alkyd resin or a styrene-butadiene resin, 80 to 20% by weight of a pigment and if desired extenders therefor, 0.5 to 5% by weight of a thickener and 0.05 to 10% by weight of a dispersing agent, into a drying chamber by means of an air stream heated to up to 500 DEG F. while maintaining a drying temperature of up to 250 DEG F. by means of a second heated air stream, conducting the so formed atomized spray through the drying chamber whereby the moisture content thereof is reduced to not more than 4% by weight before the atomized spray is discharged from said chamber, and recovering the dry solids. Specified resin binders are polymers of vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, hexoate and benzoate and copolymers thereof with vinyl esters, alkyl acrylates and methacrylates and acrylic, methacrylic and crotonic acids. The pigment may be titanium dioxide and specified extenders are clays, micas, silicas and talcs. The thickener may be a finely divided silica, borated alginate, cellulose ether, polyvinyl alcohol or guar gum. The dispersing agent may be an ethylene oxide/propylene oxide block copolymer, sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate or tertiary amine. The compositions may also comprise plasticizers, e.g. phthalate, phosphate and citrate esters and chlorinated biphenyls, and coalescing agents, e.g. glycols, glycol ethers and glycol ether esters, fungicides and preservatives. The powders may be redispersed in water to give paints. Examples describe the drying of aqueous compositions comprising (1 and 2) polyvinyl acetate, dibutyl phthalate, hexylene glycol, titanium dioxide, silica, calcium silicate, bentonite, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, methyl cellulose, polypropylene glycol, ethylene glycol, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, a sodium polycarboxylate, substituted butynediols and octynediols and alkylphenyl polyethylene glycol ether; (3) polyvinyl acetate, dibutyl phthalate, hexylene glycol, ethylene glycol, sodium alkylaryl sulphonate, methyl cellulose, sodium polycarboxylate, titanium dioxide, clay, calcium silicate and calcium carbonate; (4) styrene-butadiene copolymer, a -protein, pine oil, surfactant, titanium dioxide, diatomaceous earth, mica, silica, talc and cobalt acetate; (5) acrylic resin, alkylaryl ether, sodium polycarboxylate, ethylene glycol, titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate; and (6) a vinyl acetate-dibutyl maleate copolymer, dibutyl phthalate, hexylene glycol, ethylene glycol, sodium polycarboxylate, ethylene oxide/propylene oxide block copolymer, methyl cellulose, titanium dioxide, clay, calcium, silicate and calcium carbonate. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the process of the invention is described and illustrated. Specifications 615,723 and 641,653 are referred to.
