Abstract

A means of injecting/extruding thermoplastic materials where the injection/extrusion force is applied via a plug 2 manufactured from the same material as the one being processed and driven by a plunger or plungers or by a compressed gas and which will on subsequent injection/extrusion strokes pass through the molten section and there merge with the material being processed.

Description

THERMOPLASTIC PLUG This invention relates to a thermoplastic plug Thermoplastic materials are formed by injection moulding or extrusion. They are normally supplied in a granular form, which is fed into a barrel shaped, combined heating and compression chamber. Here they are heated to their molten form and then forced from the chamber into a mould or through an extrusion head. Subsequent cooling provides a finished thermoplastic product.
In existing machines the injection/extrusion force is applied by a plunger or by rotation of a screw within the chamber or by a combination of the two.
According to the present invention the injection/extrusion force (1) is applied to the molten thermoplastic material (7) via a plug (2) which has been manufactured from the same material as the one which is being processed. In this context thermoplastic relates to any material which can be heated to its molten form and will return to its original (or near original) state on cooling.
The force (1) on the plug (2) would be applied by a plunger or plungers driven by any suitable means. Or where the plug (2) had been designed to form a seal against the wall ofthe compression chamber (4). The force (1) on the plug (2) would be applied by means of a suitable compressed gas.
The injection/extrusion process would then be as follows: i) The heating/compression chamber (4) would be heated (6) at one end but remain cool at the other.
(As existing machines) ii) Unheated or preheated thermoplastic material in granular form (3) would be fed into the cool end.
(As existing machines) iii) A plug (2) manufactured from the same material, as the one being processed would be placed into the cool end. iv) This plug would be forced towards the heated end causing molten plastic (7) to be injected/extruded from the heated end (9). v) Injection/intrusion would cease before the forcing plug reached the heated section (5) vi) Subsequent injection/extrusion strokes would cause the spent plugs (8) to pass through the heated section where they would melt and merge with the process material.
Fig one. Shows section views of the heating/compression chamber described above.

Claims (3)

  1. CLAIMS 1. An injection moulding or extrusion machine where pressure is applied to the molten thermoplastic material in the heating/compression chamber by means of a plug manufactured from the same material as the one which is being processed, the plug being propelled forward by a plunger or plungers driven by any suitable means.
  2. 2. An injection moulding or extrusion machine where pressure is applied to the molten thermoplastic material in the heating/compression chamber by means of a plug manufactured from the same material as the one which is being processed, the plug being designed to form a seal against the wall of the compression chamber and driven forward by means of a suitable compressed gas.
  3. 3. An injection moulding or extrusion machine where an unattached plug manufactured from the same thermoplastic material as the one which is being processed, which having once been used to apply pressure to the molten materials in the heating/compression chamber as described in either 1 or 2 above will then pass through the heated section on subsequent strokes and there melt and merge with the process material.
    3. An injection moulding or extrusion machine where a plug manufactured from the same thermoplastic material as the one which is being processed, which having once been used to apply pressure to the molten materials in the heating/compression chamber as described in either 1 or 2 above will then pass through the heated section on subsequent strokes and there melt and merge with the process material.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows 1. An injection moulding or extrusion machine where pressure is applied to the molten thermoplastic material in the heating/compression chamber by means of an unattached plug manufactured from the same material as the one which is being processed, the plug being propelled forward by a plunger or plungers driven by any suitable means.
    2. An injection moulding or extrusion machine where pressure is applies to the molten thermoplastic material in the heating/compression chamber by means of an unattached plug manufactured from the same material as the one which is being processed, the plug being designed to form a seal against the wall of the compression chamber and driven forward by means of a suitable compressed gas.
