Abstract

Greetings cards 18 are retained in an album by engagement of the card fold 20 with a slit 20 in flexible plastic strips 10, the strips being retained by studs 6 extending through holes 16. The strips are interleaved between transparent plastic sheets 8.

Description

ALBUMS The present invention relates to albums and, in particular, to albums for holding greetings cards, photographs, postcards or the like. In the following description the term "card" is defined as including any of the aforesaid.
Various forms of album are known such as ring binder types or albums having a spiral spine. The albums are provided with sheets and cards are held in place by adhesive, for example adhesive sheets, corner tabs or the like. Some albums operate like a lever arch file using a metal strip to press down on the sheets or cards. Such conventional albums suffer from a number of disadvantages.
In general, they fail to provide sufficient grip on the album contents without causing damage thereto. Arranging cards in the albums can be time consuming and cards can be prone to slipping from their desired position.
The present invention has been made from a consideration of the disadvantages with known albums and in order to provide an improved album which overcomes one or more of these disadvantages.
According to the invention there is provided an album for holding cards or the like comprising one or more card holding means, such card holding means comprising a substantially planar strip of material having an elongate slot formed therein, the slot extending in the longitudinal direction of the strip.
Preferably, the strip comprises flexible or semiflexible material. The strip may be substantially transparent or translucent. Preferably the strip is substantially rectangular.
Preferably, the slot comprises a slit. Preferably, a transverse slot is provided adjacent one or both ends of the elongate slot. Preferably, the elongate slot is substantially parallel to and closer to one elongate side of the strip than the other. Preferably, such transverse slots extend from respective ends of said elongate slot towards said other side of said strip.
Preferably, means such as apertures, is provided on the card holding means for securing said card holding means in an album. Preferably, such securing means is provided adjacent the other elongate side of the strip.
Preferably, the card holding means is adapted to receive a card having a fold therein such that, in use, the fold may coincide with said elongate slot.
Preferably, the album comprises a plurality of studs for retaining said card holding means in said album.
The invention further provides a greetings card holding means comprising a substantially planar strip of material having an elongate slot formed therein, the slot extending in the longitudinal direction of the strip.
Preferably, the card holding means is as described above.
The invention will now be described further by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a view of an album of the invention in an open position; and Fig. 2 is a view of a card holding means of the invention.
Referring to Fig. 1, an album comprises front and back covers 2, 4 and a page fastening arrangement having a plurality of studs 6 which, in use, extend through a plurality of sheets 8. Typically the sheets 8 are transparent plastic sheets. Interleaved between each sheet 8 is a card holding means 10. The card holding means is shown more clearly in Fig. 2 and comprises an elongate slot 12 formed in a substantially planar strip of flexible or semi-flexible material, typically plastic.
Typically the slot 12 comprises a slit and has a transverse short slot or slit 14 adjacent one or both ends thereof. For example the transverse slots may be 1 cm or less in length. As shown, the slots 14 extend from each end of the slot 12 towards the side of the strip 10 having one or more apertures 16 for receiving the studs 6.
Preferably, the studs 6 are permanently fixed and nonreleasable although they may be releasable if desired.
In use, a plurality of card holding means are located in the album, typically interleaved between sheets 8. A card 18 can be received in the slot 12 such that the fold 20 in the card coincides with an edge of the slot 12.
Thus, the album of the invention avoids damage to the card yet securely retains the card therein. The cards in the album can easily and readily be located or re-arranged.
It will be appreciated that the present invention is not intended to be restricted to the details of the above embodiment which is described by way of example only.
