Abstract

232,844. Rushen, P. C., (Winship, E.). Aug. 23, 1924. Clutches and speedvarying mechanism; liquid-pressure engines; machines and apparatus. - Hydraulic variable-speed gearing comprises a pump rotor secured to the driving shaft 12, Fig. 2, the pistons of which are acted on by springs 18 and bear against an inclined plate 22 forming part of a driven rotor carrying motor cylinders 27, the stroke of the motor pistons being variable. The distributing valve comprises a plate 26 integral with the driven shaft co-operating with a stationary valve member 50, a spring 46 balancing the hydraulic pressure between the plate 26 and member 50. Bypass and reversing valves 61, 62 are fitted. The trunnioned member 35 is adjusted to vary the stroke of the motor pistons by pistons 77, 78, Fig. 9, acted on bv pressure liquid supplied from an auxiliary pump under the control of a valve comprising two ported discs, one of which is moved to admit liquid to one of the cylinders 81, 82, the other being operated by rack and pinion mechanism from the pistons 77, 78 in order subsequently to cut off the supply and lock the member 35 in adjusted position. Leakage is replenished from the interior of the casing through a suction valve.. If desired, the suction side of the system may be supplied with oil from the auxiliary pump, the connections including a pressure-regulating valve. Air-release conduits are provided.
