Abstract

There is disclosed a vial having a cap ordinarily closed by a one-way valve and capable of being engaged by the barrel of a hypodermic syringe to enable the syringe to be charged with fluid from the vial when inverted. Preferably the one-way valve is a spring-pressed ball. Preferably the cap is externally screw threaded to mate with a screw threaded syringe. The arrangement minimises contamination for multi-dose vials without the possibility of the syringe being contaminated with latex.

Description

VLAL This invention concerns a vial, and more particularly one of large capacity capable of dispensing a plurality of doses of fluid for injection.
Many vials are sealed with a latex cap which is punctured by the needle of a hypodermic syringe to enable the contents of the vial to be drawn into the syringe prior to the administration of an injection. There is a problem here in that the needle of the syringe can become contaminated with latex and cause adverse reaction to a sensitive patient The vial of the present invention overcomes this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a vial having a cap ordinarily closed by a one-way valve and capable of being engaged by the barrel of a hypodermic syringe to enable the syringe to be charged with fluid from the vial when inverted.
The one-way valve may comprise a valve seat surrounding an aperture in the cap, a valve member urged against the seat by resilient means and means holding the valve member captive over the seat.
The valve member may be a ball.
The resilient means may be a compression spring.
The invention will be fUrther apparent from the following description with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing which shows, by way of example only, a cross-section through one form of vial embodying same.
Referring now to the drawing, it will be seen that the vial 10 is of large capacity capable of dispensing a plurality of doses of fluid for injection.
The vial 10 is closed by a cap 11 capable of being engaged by the barrel of a hypodermic syringe before its needle is fitted. The cap 11 ofthis example provides for a screw fitting with the syringe barrel, the cap 11 having an external threaded portion 12.
It will be understood, however, that the cap may be adapted for engagement with any kind of syringe barrel.
A bore 13 through the cap 11 and communicating with the interior of the vial 10 is surrounded by a conical valve seat 14 which locates a valve member in the form of a ball 15 which is urged against the seat by a compression spring 16.
Inwardly projecting lugs 17 at the outer end of the cap 10 hold the spring 16 and hence ball 15 captive over the seat 14.
In use, the barrel of a hypodermic syringe with its plunger depressed is engaged with the cap 11. The vial is inverted and the plunger withdrawn to lift the ball 15 from the seat 14 and draw fluid into the barrel.
Once retraction ofthe plunger is complete, the ball 11 is urged back against the seat 14 by the spring 16 to reseal the vial 10 prior to disengagement ofthe barrel from the cap 10.
A needle is fitted to the syringe barrel prior to administering the injection.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof as defined by the appended claims.
