Abstract

An exterior light monitoring system for a vehicle, incorporates a control panel, and light carriers (optical fibres or others), connected to the external light sources (headlamps, side lights, fog lamps, reverse lamps, stop lamp, turning indicators) of the vehicle and shows to the driver/operator the real operational state of each individual external lamp. By this simple improvement the safety of participants of the traffic (whether on the roads or waterways) increases drastically, by showing a complete picture of the external lights and notifying the operator/driver immediately of any failures of the lighting, illuminating or indicating lamps. The control panel carries a graphic drawing or illustration of the vehicle to more clearly show the operational state of each lamp.

Description

EXTERIOR LIGHTS MONITORING SYSTEM FOR VEHICLES INCORPORATED IN CONTROL PANELlAREA Technical field This invention relates to better monitoring arrangements of external lights (signal and illuminating) for the driver of a vehicle.
Background All modern transport vehicles are equipped with external signalling devices for indicating to others the driver's intentions and actions as braking, turning left/right and reversing. As well transport vehicles are equipped with side lights, headlights for driving in the dark and fog lamps.
As external lights are not visible directly to the driver/operator, in existing vehicles they are imitated within the control panel or other area, directly visible for the driver/operator. Method of imitation of status is the use of a duplicating bulb/s. It is connected to the same switch or relay as an end bulb (headlamp, brake lights, turning left/right lights and reversing lamp). But if any of the external bulbs/lamps are out of order, as well as their electric connection, their duplicators on the control panel still imitate good working order of external lights. This misleads the driver/operator and can cause a fatal accident on the transport way.
Only a few methods can allow the driver/operator see the real conditions of external light/s: (Design of lamp/s and their placement on the body of the vehicle in the way to extend or reflect their real light to be visible by the driver/operator directly or indirectly (via mirror).
(System of mirrors.
(This invention offers a third arrangement - to channel original light via any flexible light conductors, namely a glass-like optical fibre or a pipe with transparent liquid - to an area of control in the form of diagram, which shows the whole vehicle together and the points of contact of the ends of fibres (say, inserted into the holes in the plate) with the surface of dashboard.
Essential technical features According to the present invention there is provided: (Control panel (or any area visible for the driver/operator of a vehicle).
( Graphic drawing or illustration of the whole vehicle on the control panel to which the light carriers (fibres) are connected, transferring the actual light from the external light sources, allowing a driver/operator to see real condition of any particular lamp - whether light is on or off.
( A source of external light - bulb, lamp (normally out of direct vision of the driver/operator).
(A light conductor, like optical fibre or similar, which connects these two zones, i.e. control panel and source of external light.

  1. tainiS
An exterior light monitoring system as part of the control panel comprising: external light sources (brake lights, headlamps, side lights, turning indicators, reverse lights, rear fog lamp), optical fibres or other light carriers, transferring light to the appropriate area of the control panel, to provide the driver/operator with an actual status of the lights (see drawing 1).
The first segment of the system is the end bulbs or lamps. The second segment is the diagram on the control panel, showing the vehicles lights in appropriate places (see drawing 2) or it can be arranged in different way. The third segment is the optical fibres, connecting the lights to the diagram, allowing the driver/operator to see the actual operational state of each lamp.
The diameter of the light carrier in form of optical fibres or any other form is irrelevant. The level of lighting to the end of the fibres is not important as long as it shows whether the light is on or off. The collection of light on the lamp end is ensured by a simple insertion of it (of that end of the fibre) into the internal area of lamp, where the distance from the bulb or direction towards the bulb is not so important in principle.
The presentation of the diagram end of the fibres or other light carriers can be arranged in a form of a car/vehicle, drawn by paints on the glass or plastic plate, used as a base for control panel, or in other forms, indicating by each spot of light on the board corresponding to a particular exterior lamp. Each spot on the diagram can be painted with a corresponding colour of the lamp.
Each fibre is connected to the board permanently.
When the lights are on, the driver/operator sees the actual light being transferred by the fibre/carrier, ending at the control panel. If the lamp is not working (whether electrical circuit or relay is broken or bulb itself is gone) - the light is not shown on the control panel, which indicates to the driver/operator a failure.
The diagram can be placed in any convenient place for immediate observation by the driver, for example in the centre of the control panel.
