Description
1 LIGHT SOURCE ARRANGEMENT The present invention relates to a light source
arrangement.
2326930 Light sources are known which, especially in the case of a headlamp with focussing of the light beam on a predetermined illumination region, comprise an incandescent lamp, a halogen lamp or a gas-discharge lamp with additional optical means for focussing, for example a parabolic reflector. In these light sources typically only about 40 to 50% of the emitted light can be utilised for illumination of the predetermined region.
Halogen lamps as light sources also have the disadvantage that the emission spectrum of the radiated fight noticeably displaces during the limited life span of the lamp (about 100 to 1000 hours) and, similarly to incandescent lamps, an abrupt failure of the light source is possible. Gas-discharge lamps do, in fact, have a longer life span than the previously mentioned light sources, but they are more costly to produce and consequently more expensive.
According to the present invention there is provided a light source arrangement comprising a plurality of light sources arranged on a carrier and provided individually or in groups with optical means for focussing light beams of the light sources on a least one illumination point or region.
A light source arrangement embodying the invention is particularly advantageous in that the individual light sources can be formed from components with an excellent degree of effectiveness and a long life span. The individual light sources can be so arranged in advantageous manner on a carrier material that each light source or a group of light sources radiates at an own angle with respect to a geometric axis into the field of illumination.
The carrier itself for the light sources can be so formed that the light of each source or a group of the sources is focussed individually on a specific point or a specific region. As a result, the utilisation of the emitted light of each source and the radiation characteristic of the light source arrangement are optimised. Advantageously, however, the optical means for focussing of the light beams comprises a micro-lens arrangement integrated in the light sources or placed thereon. The micro- lens arrangement in that case preferably comprises 2 structured epoxide resin or polymeric or giass-like materials. Moreover, the optical means can comprise a reflector arrangement arranged at the side of the light sources remote from the illumination point or region.
In a particularly preferred embodiment the light sources are lightemitting diodes, the emission spectrum of which does not vary over an extremely high life span. Such diodes are in advantageous manner bonded as semiconductor chips directly, possibly together with the optical means, on a semiconductor substrate serving as carrier material and are thus integrated into a composite.
In a particularly advantageous application of the light source arrangement, this is in the form of a headlamp for a vehicle. Such a headlamp can have, particularly in the case of integration into the bodywork of a motor vehicle, a significantly smaller constructional depth than conventional headlamps, which thus opens up new design possibilities in vehicle construction. Since the individual light sources or groups of light sources can be individually aligned in the headlamp system, the efficiency of the entire system can be increased and the system can remain functionally capable even in the case of failure of one or more of the light sources.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be more particularly described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a schematic elevation of part of a motor vehicle headlamp embodying the invention.
Referring now to the drawing there is shown a light source arrangement 1 with a plurality of individual light sources 2, 3 and 4, which arrangement is intended to function as a headlamp. The fight sources 2, 3 and 4 are light-emitting diodes, which are bonded to a semiconductor substrate serving as a carrier 5.
The carrier 5 is so shaped, particularly in the upper region with the light sources 2, that the light beams 6 thereof overall have a radiation characteristic which is focussed at a predetermined point or region in the field of illumination of the headlamp. The light beams 7 and 8 of the light sources 3 and 4 are in that case individually focussed on other points or regions in the field of illumination. Micro-lens or reflector arrangements, which are not shown in detail in the figure and which act as optical means to assist the respective focussing, are mounted in the region of the light sources 2, 3 and 4.
