Abstract

The boat is propelled by oars, each of which comprises a handle part 2 and a separate blade part 1,the handle part 2 being pivoted at its outer end, and the blade part I pivoted at its inner end. The two parts are connected by a link 3 which is resistant to buckling and torsion, and which is pivotably attached to the two parts at a distance from their pivots such as to transmit the fore and aft movement of the handle, in the same sense, to the oar blade. It feathering is desired (see Fig 5), each part above is subdivided into an inner (4) and an outer (concentric) part (5), and the relative twist of the handle is transmitted by an additional link, e.g. a bowden cable (6), to give a corresponding twist to the blade.

Description

FORWARD-FACING ROWING BOA1' This invention relates to a boat which can be rowed whilst facing forward. Current European rowing boats are rowed with the rower facing aft, which can result in a collision if tlie rower does not keep looking round to see where the boat is going, or literally a pain in the neck if (s)he does.
Means to do this which have been described hitherto were complex and lacked the necessary robustness. They have usually resulted in a span of oars as great as that of a boat with conventional oars. Outside Europe, boats are sometimes rowed facing í'orward standing up, but this is an unstable arrangement, especially for small boats, and tends to strain the back of the rower. Seated rowing in the fresh air is excellent exercise for legs, back and arms and will be increasingly sought. Boats with wide-spanning oars on boating lakes, canals and narrow rivers will cause increasing congestion. An arrangement which greatly reduces the span is therefore needed, and can by this means be provided.
Summary of the Invention The invention provides a boat adapted for forward facing rowing having at least one pair of oars, wherein each oar comprises a handle part and a blade part, the handle part and the blade part each being pivotally mounted on the boat by mounting means, and a member extending be tween and connecting the handle part and the blade part in such a man ner that movement of the handle part in a direction causes movement of the blade part in the same direction.
The mounting means may be a rowlock or gimbals.
Preferably, the handle part and the blade part of each oar are spaced longitudinally along the length of the boat.
Each oar of a pair may be parallel with the other oar of the pair, or alternatively, each oar of a pair may spaced longitudinally relative to the other.
Irecessaril, the member extending between and connecting the handle part and the blade part is resistant to torsion.
Where uotS oable, the mounting means for the blade part is mounted inwardly of the mounting means for the handle part. The mounting means for the handle part and/or the blade part may be mounted on outriggers.
The oars of a pair may be so spaced and located to permit operation thereof by one rower or by two rowers. The oars may be so spaced and located as to permit operation thereof by two rowers with the rowers sitting side by side or one behind the other.
In one embodiment of the invention, means to feather the blade parts is provided. The handle part and the blade part may each comprise two sections, one being rotatable relative to the other, and a connecting means wherein rotation of one section of the handle part causes rotation of one section of the blade part. The said connecting means may comprise a bowden cable.
The boat may be provided with either a fixed seat or a movable seat. A movable seat may be a sliding or rolling seat.
The boat of the invention is considerably narrower than boats of the prior art. This is particularly advantageous when rowing in limited space.
Furthermore, the rower can see where he is going which reduces the risk of his boat colliding with other boats, and also increases the likelihood of his boat travelling in a straight line.
Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments In this invention each oar is in two parts, a blade part I and a handle part 2, each with its own rowlock or vertical gimbals. The handle part is connected to the blade part on the same side of the boat by a single link 3 which is resistant to buckling and torsion. This link is so made and so attached to the part-oars as to transmit longitudinal pushes and pulls, whilst ensuring that the angle between the oar and the horizontal plane is substantially the same in the blade part as in the handle.
The altachment of the link is made at roughly the same distance from the rowlocks (or gimbals) in the handle part as in the blade part; this distance may for example be between 30 and 40 centimetres In a boat for one rower (or two side-by-side) the rowlocks or gimbals for the blade-parts of the oars will be at or near the bow of the boat. Thus the links 3 will be roughly parallel with the main axis of the boat, and the span of the oar-blades will be greatly reduced. In a boat for several rowers one behind the other, the links 3 will diverge from the boat's axis as they pass from rower to oar-blade.
In the simplest form of this invention, the oar-blades cannot be feathered". If it is desired to provide for "feathering", each part-oar will have an inner, 4, and an outer portion, 5, which can twist relative to each other, this relative twist being transmitted to the inner and outer blade-parts by simple mechanical means such as a bowden cable 6 as in Figure 5.
By way of example, drawings are attached which show : Figure I a plan view of a small boat fitted with a simple version of the device.
Figure 2 a view on the bow of the same boat with one oar in the rowing position, and the other oar returning between strokes.
Figure 3 rowlocks including the thole pin variety.
Figure 4 a tbrm of vertical gimbals which could be used in place of rowlocks, and Figure 5 a diagram showing how "feathering" can be provided.
