Abstract

A gearbox casing 10 has a projection 11 providing a fixing point for securing the gearbox casing to the bodywork of a vehicle. An integral extension 12 of the gearbox casing 10 provides a mounting bracket by means of which the gearbox casing can be secured to a support shaft 3. The mounting bracket 12 is of semi-circular shape and mates with a sleeve-part of similar shape which fits around the other side of the circular support shaft. Bolts passing through the mounting bracket 12, the support shaft and the sleeve part hold the gearbox casing 10 firmly onto the support shaft but enable the gearbox 8 and the associated motor 9 to be detached readily if desired. The gearbox casing 10 and the mounting bracket 12 (and the projection 11) are formed as a single integral casting.

Description

ImProvements relatinq to a Gearbox Suttort This invention is concerned with a motor and gearbox arrangement which is provided to drive one or more arms of a windscreen wiper assembly. With a dual arm assembly there is a need to mount the gearbox and motor combination securely between the two wiper arms in such a way that the combination can readily be detached if necessary, but so that disruptive vibration problems are minimised.
According to the present invention there is provided a motor mounting comprising a gearbox casing together with an integrally-formed mounting bracket for attachment to a shaft of a support framework of equipment to be driven from a motor acting through the gearbox.
The integral formation of the mounting bracket with the gearbox casing provides for a very stable mounting of the gearbox relative to the support framework. Also there is no possibility of vibration (and associated noise) between the gearbox casing and the mounting bracket. Ideally the gearbox casing and the mounting bracket are cast as a single piece.
In the preferred arrangement the mounting bracket is a part-sleeve adapted to the shape of the shaft of the support framework. A mating part-sleeve may be provided to fit over the other side of the shaft of the support framework prior to being secured to the mounting bracket. The mounting bracket may be formed to locate about a shaft of circular or channel shape of any desired cross-section. The bracket can be provided with mounting holes through which screws or bolts can be secured into the shaft of the support framework.
The invention may be performed in various ways and preferred embodiments will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 is a side view of a dual wiper arm drive assembly; Figure 2 is a view from the other side of the motor gearbox combination of the assembly shown in Figure 1; and Figures 3 and 4 are views from opposite sides of an alternative form of drive assembly for a pair of wiper arms.
A support framework for a pair of wiper arms is shown in Figure 1 and comprises mounting parts 1 and 2 at either end of a support shaft 3. Reciprocating wiper arms are located on drive linkages 4 and 5 which are caused to reciprocate by rods 6 and 7 which are driven from a gearbox 8 controlled by a motor 9.
The gearbox casing 10 has a projection 11 providing a fixing point for securing the gearbox casing to the bodywork of a vehicle. An integral extension 12 of the gearbox casing 10 provides a mounting bracket by means of which the gearbox casing can be secured to the support shaft 3. The mounting bracket 12 is of semi-circular shape and mates with a sleeve-part 13 of similar shape which fits around the other side of the circular support shaft 3. Bolts 14 passing through the mounting bracket 12, the support shaft 3 and the sleeve part 13 hold the gearbox casing 10 firmly onto the support shaft 3 but enable the gearbox 8 and the associated motor 9 to be detached readily if desired. The gearbox casing 10 and the mounting bracket 12 (and the projection 11) are formed as a single integral casting.
In the arrangement shown in Figures 3 and 4 a more complex gearbox 8A is provided. Again there is a mounting bracket 12A which is formed integrally with the gearbox casing 10A, whereby the gearbox 8A can be securely mounted onto the support shaft 3A. Parts comparable to those shown in Figures 1 and 2 are given the same numerals but with the suffix A. The gearbox 8A drives a single drive rod 7A, but a further drive rod 15 interconnects the two drive linkages 4 and 5 (as shown in Figure 1) to provide the necessary movement of the drive linkage 4.
