Abstract
A hairdressing aid comprises two hemi cylindrical brush parts 1,2 pivoted at one and by a strap 9. Each brush half has a handle part 3,4 and a brush body part 5,6 with bristles 7,8 and the two brush halves can be swung into a configuration where their bristles interdigitate for allowing a hair tress placed between the brush halves to be stroked straight.
Description
HAIRDRESSING AID
This invention relates to an aid for hairdressing, in particular for the purpose of straightening a damp tress of hair.
It is known to straighten hair by placing a tress of hair between two brushes and stroking the tress between the interdigitated bristles of the two brushes, along a direction away from the hair roots and towards the hair ends. Such an operation requires either considerable dexterity on the part of the hairdresser, or the input of two people, so that one can position the tress between the opposed bristles of the two brushes held by the other hairdresser.
The hairdressing aid of the present invention aims to enable one person to both hold the two brushing members and to position the tress between them.
According to the present invention there is provided a hairdressing aid having two interconnected hair-engaging parts which can be brought into a configuration facing one another to enable a tress to be placed between them for stroking and can be moved apart to allow such a tress to be placed between them.
Preferably the two hair-engaging parts may be brushing parts which may preferably each be hemi-cylindrical so that together they form a cylindrical brush for rolling up a tress for curling purposes.
Merely by way of example there will now be described one embodiment of the hairdressing aid of this invention, in the form of a cylindrical brush, shown in the accompanying drawing in which:
FIGURE 1 is an end view of the brush in a configuration ready for curling a tress, seen along the direction of the arrow A at the right hand end in Figure 2; and
FIGURE 2 is a sectional view taken on the line B - B of Figure 1, but showing the brush partly opened.
The brush shown in Figure 1 comprises two hemi-cylindrical haircontacting halves 1,2, split along a diametral plane, and in this case hinged together at the end remote from the handle. The top half 1 shown in Figure 2 has a handle end portion 3 and a brush body portion 5 with the bristles 7. The bottom half 2 has a handle end portion 4 and a brush body portion 6 with the bristles 8.
At the (lefthand) end remote from the bristles the brush body portions 5 and 6 are hingeably joined by a strap 9. Near the strap is an optional groove (11 in the top brush body 5 and 10 in the lower brush body portion 6) serving to receive holding means such as an elastic band or a spring clip. Likewise, at the junction between the brush body portion 5 or 6 and the handle portion 3 or 4 is a respective optional groove part 13 or 14 which can receive such holding means to keep the complete structure 1,2 in register when the brush is in the Figure 1 configuration for curling in the conventional manner.
For normal use of the brush for curling tresses the two handle end portions are brought together (for example by moving the upper one 3 along the direction of arrow 15) into contact with one another, and then any appropriate holding means can be engaged with the grooves 10,11 and/or 13,14. Alternatively, when the brush is going to be used frequently for straightening it is quite easy for the hairdresser to hold the brush in its cylindrical configuration simply by grasping the handle 3,4.
To place the brush in a configuration ready for straightening, the hairdresser simply holds the brush 1,2 in one hand with no holding means on and flips it over to bring the bristles 7 of the top part 1 into an interdigitating relationship with the bristles 8 of the lower part 2 (for example by holding the lower part 2 and swinging the upper part 1 anticlockwise in the direction of the arrow 17 in Figure 2 through about 160 degrees) while holding the tress in the other hand.
As indicated above the important feature is that the two haircontacting parts of one hairdressing aid, in this case brush parts 5 and 6, can be brought into a configuration where they engage the tress from opposite sides while the tress is being positioned between them. The connection between the haircontacting parts does not have to be a hinge and does not have to be at one end of a cylindrical body; several alternative arrangements will be readily apparent to the skilled reader.
Claims (9)
1. A hairdressing aid having two interconnected hair-engaging parts which can be brought into a configuration facing one another to enable a tress to be placed between them for stroking and can be moved apart to allow such a tress to be placed between them.
2. A hairdressing aid according to claim 1, wherein the hairengaging parts are brush parts having bristles which interdigitate when in said facing configuration.
3. A hairdressing aid according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the brush parts are pivotally interconnected.
4. A hairdressing aid according to claim 3, wherein the brush parts are hemi-cylindrical and are pivotally interconnected at one end of the cylinder formed by them.
5. A hairdressing aid according to claim 4, wherein the cylindrical brush defined by the two brush parts has a handle at one end and the pivotal interconnection at the other end.
6. A hairdressing aid according to any one of claims 3 to 5, including means for holding the two brush parts in a cylindrical configuration.
7. A hairdressing aid according to claim 6, wherein the holding means comprise at least one spring clip or at least one band to engage corresponding groove parts on the brush body parts.
8. A hairdressing aid according to any one of claims 3 to 7, wherein the interconnection is a flexible strap.
9. A hairdressing aid constructed and adapted to operate substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
9. A hairdressing aid constructed and adapted to operate substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows 1. A hairdressing aid having two interconnected hair-engaging parts which can be brought into a first configuration facing one another to enable a tress to be placed between them for stroking and are able to be moved apart to allow such a tress to be placed between them, and into a second configuration in which the hair-engaging parts face outwardly from a core for curling tresses.
2. A hairdressing aid according to claim 1, wherein the hairengaging parts are brush parts having bristles which interdigitate when in said first configuration.
3. A hairdressing aid according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the brush parts are pivotally interconnected for movement between the first and second configurations.
4. A hairdressing aid according to claim 3, wherein the brush parts are hemi-cylindrical and are pivotally interconnected at one end of the cylinder formed by them in said second configuration.
5. A hairdressing aid according to claim 4, wherein the cylindrical brush defined by the two brush parts in said second configuration has a handle at one end and the pivotal interconnection at the other end.
6. A hairdressing aid according to any one of claims 3 to 5, including means for holding the two brush parts in said second configuration.
7. A hairdressing aid according to claim 6, wherein the holding means comprise at least one spring clip or at least one band to engage corresponding groove parts on the brush body parts in said second configuration.
