Abstract
232,291. Coventry Chain Co., Ltd., and Clevely, C. E. S. Dec. 21, 1923. Tension, guiding, and supporting arrangements. - An eccentricallymounted chain tensioning wheel is automaticallv moved around a fixed shaft in accordance with variations in the tension of the chain, by a force acting axially along the shaft and produced by a weight or axially compressible and extensible spring. In the form shown, a toothed rim 2 is freely mounted between side plates 4, 5 upon an eccentric sheave 3 carried by a fixed hollow shaft 6 which may be secured to a support by a screwed end 7. Within the shaft is housed an axially-acting spring 8 pressing against a plunger 9 carrying a pin 10 which passes radially through an inclined or helical slot 11 in the shaft and terminates in a head or block 12 adapted to slide in an axial groove or keyway 13 in the eccentric sheave, so that axial movement of the plunger 9 under the influence of the spring causes rotary motion of the eccentric, which is retained on the shaft by a screw stud 16, engaging a part circumferential slot 18 therein. An aperture 19 in the plate 5 facilitates compression of the spring in assembling. The spring may be replaced by a weight suspended from a chain or cable passing over a pulley, through the opening 19 and attached to the plunger 9.
