Description

1 Device for Spreading Out a Length of Cloth
Description
2322388 The invention relates to a device for spreading out an openedout length of textile cloth.
Cloth guides which are allocated to the edges of the length of cloth are known from DE 16 35 142 B2. A spreading device with two driven spreading or unrolling fingers and control roller moveable perpendicular to the surface of the length of cloth and located between these fingers is described in this publication. The known device requires drives and control means allocated thereto for effective operation.
EP 0 312 043 B1 describes a device for spreading and guiding a running length of textile cloth, which essentially comprises two parallel contact rollers extending over the width of the length of cloth and a guide device connected downline of these rollers in the transport direction of the length of cloth. The guide device has itself two pairs of rollers, only enclosing the edge regions of the length of cloth between them and placed obliquely in the opposite direction to the running direction of the cloth, with over-mounted, finger-type rollers. The latter should be freely moveable and each roller pair should be oriented obliquely in relation to the transport direction so that the axes of the roller pairs arranged opposite one another on the edges of the length of cloth converge in transport direction. In other words, the axes of 2 the finger-type rollers in the known arrangement should be directed obliquely forwards with respect to the perpendicular to the transport direction - as viewed in the surface of the length of cloth.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved spreading device with an action similar to the known spreading fingers, but which does not require spreading rollers arranged upline nor drives for the unrolling means.
According to the invention there is provided a device for spreading an opened-out length of textile cloth said device comprising a rotatable brush roller with an axis of rotation directed obliquely rearward in a plane approximately parallel to the surface of the length of cloth with respect to the perpendicular to the transport direction of the length of cloth.
A pair of such brush rollers can be used with each roller allocated to one of the edge margins of the cloth. The rollers can cooperate with a table or with other support surfaces beneath the cloth. Preferably the cloth is moved in a direction approximately tangentially to the circumference of the brush roller or rollers.
With a device constructed in accordance with the invention, the complex drive and control devices of conventional spreading or guide means assigned to the plane of the length of cloth and the edges of the length of cloth are unnecessary.
3 As appears hereinafter, there are primarily two alternative preferred embodiments of the invention. In the first embodiment the length of cloth is guided at the edges between a brush roller and a table, and in the second alternative the length of cloth is guided at the edges between two rollers pressed against one another, at least one of these being in the form of a brush roller.
In the first alternative, a table is preferably assigned to the length of cloth, at least in the region of the action of the brush roller, in such a manner that the brush roller presses the length of cloth, possibly moving in the transport direction, against the table. In the second alternative, a likewise freely rotatably mounted counter-roller is allocated to the brush roller on the surface of the length of cloth remote from it, and the axis of said counter-roller should lie parallel to the--- _first-mentioned brush roller. The counterroller may preferably also be provided in the form of a brush roller. The counter-roller should expediently have a relatively rough surface so that it may be set in rotation by the feed of the length of cloth - like a brush roller pressed against the length of cloth.
According to a further feature of the invention, the path of the length of cloth along the brush roller in rotational engagement with it should run approximately along a tangent of the brush roller circumference. In this case, according to the above-mentioned first alternative, the path of the length of 4 cloth can lie parallel to the plane of the table, but may also (in the second alternative) run in the plane of the common tangent of the brush roller and counter-roller.
The individual brush roller or each brush roller is mounted so as to be freely rotatable, hence it is not set in rotation by a separate motor, but by the passing length of cloth when the roller touches this. The circumferential speed of the individual brush roller or that of the rollers of a roller pair - because of the characteristic obliquely rearward orientation of the roller axes (in the opposite direction to the transport direction) lies below the transport speed of the length of cloth. This means: if the roller axis of the in the plane of the length of cloth was to stand exactly perpendicular to the transport direction, the circumferential speed of the brush roller would be equal to the transport speed of the length of cloth. If the axis of the brush roller wereto lie parallel to the transport direction, the brush roller would not be driven. Depending on orientation of the brush roller axis with respect to the transport direction, therefore, the circumferential speed of the brush roller can be changed between zero and the transport speed.
brush roller If the brush roller axis is tilted in the opposite direction to the run of the length of cloth, the cloth will bank up slightly in front of the brush roller, since the circumference of the roller moves more slowly than the length of cloth. Because of the oblique orientation of the roller, the banked up cloth is pressed outwards with respect to the transport direction. The result is the intended spreading or unrolling of the length of cloth or of its edge regions.
The above merely concerns the attempt to clarify the surprising effect which is already apparent on the basis that a brush roller mounted so as to be freely rotatable (against a table or a counter-roller) with the characteristic tilted arrangement against the transport direction is brought into engagement with the length of material to be controlled in such a manner that the brush roller is set in rotation by the length of cloth. The extent of the spreading effect of the device according to the invention may be predetermined by the magnitude of the pressing force, with which the brush roller is pressed against the length of cloth or against the table or the counter-roller, and/or the size of the angle of tilt (in the opposite direction to the transport direction).
Some further details of the invention are explained on the basis of the schematic representation of an embodiment, in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a top view (perpendicular to the length of cloth) of the essential parts of a device constructed in accordance with the invention, and Figure 2 shows a section perpendicular to the plane of the drawing of Figure 1.
6 The device shown in Figures 1 and 2 is suitable for spreading or rolling out a length of cloth 1 transported in the transport direction 2 in the plane of the length of cloth at its edges 3, 4. The device employs brush rollers 5 and 6 for this purpose. These rollers 5, 6 are brought into engagement with the length of cloth 1 at the edges 3 and 4 with a pressing force adapted to the quality of the cloth and the rolling out task. A table 7 (possibly at both edges 3, 4), along which the length of cloth 1 slides, or a respective counter-roller 8 is selectively positioned opposite the brush rollers 5 and 6.
According to the invention, the brush rollers 5, 6 and possibly also the counter-rollers 8 - should be directed with their axes 9, on the one hand, (viewed from the edge of the length of cloth to the centre of the length of cloth) approximately paralle 1 to the surface of the length of cloth 1 and, on the other hand, obliquely rearward (i.e. contrary to the transport direction) at an angle A with respect to the perpendicular (normal) 10 to the transport direction 2 of the length of cloth 1. In the case of this opposed positioning, it has surprisingly been found that the approaching length of cloth 1 was pushed outwards in the direction of arrow 11 so that the length of cloth 1 is spread upon passage of the brush rollers 5, 6 by a relatively large amount B in the manner shown in principle. The magnitude of amount B may be set by selection of the angle A and/or by selection of the pressing force K, with which the rollers 5, 6 were pressed against the table 7 or the counter-roller 8.
7 The preferred opposed positioning of the brush rollers 5, 6 and the length of cloth 1 with a tangential passage (of the length of cloth) is shown in the drawing. The length of cloth 1 is therefore transported either parallel to the table surface between the brush rollers 5, 6 and the table 7 along a tangent of the brush rollers 5, 6, or it is moved forwards between a brush roller 5, 6 and a counter-roller 8 along the common tangent of the cooperating rollers clamping it. Looping of the rollers is unnecessary as a rule, especially if the edges 3, 4 of the length of cloth are clamped between a respective brush roller pair 5, 6, 8. The braking action of the spreading device according to the invention on the length of cloth overall can therefore generally be maintained negligibly small, and therefore it does not lead to an undesirable distortion of the length of cloth.
In principle, the_brush rollers 5, 6 or the counter-rollers 8 may be mounted on one side or so as to be over-mounted, just like in conventional spreading means of this type. Since the brush rollers or counter-rollers are not looped by the length of cloth, however, it is also possible to support each of the brush rollers or counter-rollers on both longitudinal edges, e.g. a bow is directed around the roller on the rear of each of the rollers 5, 6, 8 remote from the length of cloth 1, in order to hold the brush roller bearing located above or below the plane of the length of cloth.
8 A device for spreading an opened-out length of textile cloth with at least one spreading finger mounted so as to be freely rotatable is described. In order to save use of a rotary drive of the spreading finger, this is provided in the form of a brush roller, the axis of which is directed obliquely rearward in a plane approximately parallel to the surface of the length of cloth with respect to the perpendicular to the transport direction of the length of cloth.
