Abstract
A screw roller for expanding a travelling fabric has spiral projecting members formed around the circumference of the roller body 1 for engaging and expanding a fabric F upon rotation of the roller body. The spiral projecting members are formed by a pair of brush means 4 which extend in relatively opposite directions about the roller body from the centre of the roller body to respective axial ends of the roller body. Air nozzles (not shown) may be disposed between the roller and the fabric to blow compressed air in the fabric expanding direction.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Fabric expanding screw roller
Conventionally, a screw roller is used for expanding a travelling fabric to a predetermined width with curls of the fabric selvedges removed.
The spiral projecting members of such conventional screw rollers are made of a metallic material, such as stainless steel, or a resilient material such as rubber. However, a screw roller having metallic spiral projecting members cannot sufficiently expand a fabric since the frictional resistance of the spiral projecting members with the fabric is too small so that slippage with the fabric readily occurs. On the other hand, a screw roller having resilient spiral projecting members is apt to damage a fabric, since the frictional resistance of such spiral projecting members with the fabric is too large. In addition, spiral projecting members made of resilient material are apt to be easily worn out and therefore have less durability.
Furthermore, in either case of metallic or resilient spiral projecting members, if a fabric is thin and/or wet, such slip and damage of the fabric are particularly noticeable so that a predetermined smooth and secure fabric expanding effect can be hardly achieved.
The present invention seeks to provide a fabric expanding screw roller having an improved fabric holding function of the spiral projecting members arranged around the circumference of the ro!ler body, so as to prevent slippage of the fabric during fabric-expansion, thereby to securely achieve a predetermined fabric expanding effect; and so as to achieve expansion of a fabric without damage thereto even if such fabric is thin, and to prevent slippage of a fabric even if such fabric is thin and wet, thereby again to securely achieve a predetermined fabric-expanding effect.
According to the invention there is provided a fabric expanding screw roller comprising a roller body and spiral projecting members arranged around the outer circumference of the roller body so as to engage and to expand a fabric upon rotation of the roller body;
in which the spiral projecting members are constituted by a pair of brush means which extend in relatively opposite directions about the roller body from a position intermediate the axially opposite ends of the roller body, each brush means extending in spiral manner from said intermediate position to a respective one of said opposite ends.
A Fabric expanding screw roller according to the invention may operate so as to expand a travelling fabric to a predetermined width in the direction towards the fabric selvedges with curls of the fabric selvedges removed, as done by a conventional screw roller of this type. In addition, the screw roller performs particular operational effects as follows.
since the spiral projecting members are made of brush means, a proper resiliency inherent in the brush means and a secure fabric holding function by the tips of the brush means enable a fabric, even if it is wet, to be securely expanded without the fabric slippage which takes place with a conventional screw roller having metallic spiral projecting members.
- A fabric, even if it is thin, can be smoothly expanded without the damage to the fabric which takes place with a conventional screw roller having spiral projecting members made of a resilient material such as rubber.
even if the brush tips are worn out when used for a long period of time, the shape of the brush tips is not substantially changed but maintains their original form, so that such fabric expanding effect as abovementioned can be performed for a long period of time.
One embodiment of fabric expanding screw roller according to the invention will now be described in detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view, with portions omitted, of the fabric expanding screw roller;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view of portions of a roller body of the roller shown in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is an enlarged section view of portions of the fabric expanding screw roller shown in
Figure 1.
The fabric expanding screw roller comprises a roller body 1 and brush means 4 which constitute spiral projecting members arranged around the circumference of the roller body.
As shown in Figures 2 and 3, a roller body 1 is made of a steel pipe and is provided around the circumference thereof with spiral grooves 2 symmetrically inclined in opposite angular directions from the center of the roller body to the axially opposite ends thereof. Shafts 3 are mounted at each end of the roller body.
Each brush means 4 comprises a spiral-shaped brush holding member 5 which holds brush material formed by a number of brush material elements 7 made of synthetic or vegetable fibers, the base ends of which are collectively inserted into a spiral groove 6 defined by the brush holding member 5. The brush holding member 5 is externally caulked so that the brush material is densely held by the brush holding member 5. It is to be noted that the brush material is inserted into the brush holding member 5 with slight inclination in the same direction.
The brush holding members 5 of a pair of brush means 4 are respectively inserted into the spiral grooves 2 of the roller body 1 with the respective brush material inclined in the direction towards the respective ends of the roller. The brush holding members 5 are secured at the ends thereof to the roller body 1 by screws 8. With such arrangement, there is formed a fabric expanding screw roller in which the brush means 4 constitute spiral projecting members which are symmetrically formed around the circumference of the roller body, are inclined in relatively opposite angular directions from the center of the roller body to the opposite axial ends thereof.
Thus, the two brush means extend in relatively opposite directions about the roller body from a position intermediate the axially opposite ends of the roller body e.g. the centre of the body, each brush means extending in spiral manner from the intermediate position to a respective one of the opposite ends.
With the shafts 3 journalled to bearings 9 for example as shown in Figure 1, the fabric expanding screw roller may be rotated by a motor (not shown) via a belt 10 and a pulley 11 in a direction such that the brush means 4 move in the same direction as the direction of travel of the fabric F during contact therewith to expand the fabric. Alternatively, rotation of the roller in the direction opposite to the fabric travelling direction shown by the arrow may improve the fabric expanding effect.
Although not shown, a plurality of air nozzles may be disposed in the vicinity between the roller and a fabric, and compressed air may be blown from the air nozzles to the fabric surface in the fabric expanding direction. Such arrangement may further improve the fabric expanding effect.
