Abstract
232,118. McKay, D. Oct. 7, 1924. Tonsils, preventing bleeding from.-A device for preventing bleeding from the cavities formed by the removal of tonsils comprises two plates 1, 2 adapted to fit the cavities and carried by stems 3, 4 of which the latter has a tubular portion 5 to receive the stem 3 telescopically. The stems are enclosed in an outer sleeve 8 to which is riveted a spring strip 12 having its ends 15, 15 turned down to engage with ratchet teeth 10, 11 on the stems 3, 4. The ends 14, 15 can be disengaged from the teeth 10, 11 by levers 18, 19 which embrace the sleeve 8 and pass under the strip 12, the lower ends of the levers having cords 21 attached thereto which pass through eyes 16, 17 on the plates 1, 2. When the device is to be used the cords 21 are pulled thereby causing the levers 18, 19 to raise the ends 14, 15 of the strip 12 out of engagement. with the teeth 10, 11. The plates 1, 2 can then be moved inwards and the device inserted in the mouth and held by a pair of forceps. A second pair of forceps is then used for pulling the stems 3, 4 outwards until the plates 1, 2 bed themselves in the tonsil cavities. The plates 1, 2 are covered with gauze pads which are kept in position by plates 24 which are prevented from sliding backwards along the stems 3, 4 by ratchet teeth 29. Each plate 24 is made in two portions 40, 41 pivoted together at 25 as shown in Fig. 5 and held together bv a spring 26. When the gauze pads are to be removed from the plates 1, 2 the two portions 40, 41 of the plates 24 are separated to free the latter from the ratchet teeth 29 when the plates 24 can be slid along the stems 3. 4 to release the pads. Springs, not shown. surround the stems 3, 4 between the plates 24 and sleeve 8. The plates 1, 2 mav consist of spirals of spring wire or strip.
