Description

A cover for electrical connectorsiaccessories This invention relates to electrical connectors/accessories.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a cover for electrical connectors/accessories/equipment therefor comprising a plate having a planar surface, the comer being mountable on the connectors/accessories/equipment, wherein a design selectable by a user of the cover is viewable on or through the visible planar surface of the cover when mounted on the connector/accessories.
In one alternative embodiment the cover is a flat planar panel which is mounted on the connector/equipment by screwing, adhesive suction or clip. Preferably, the cover is opaque.
In a further embodiment the cover is conveniently a flat planar panel having a flange extending outwardly and rearwardly therefrom so that in use the flange constitutes a friction fit onto the connectorsiaccessories/equipment. Conveniently, the cover may be transparent (partially transparent).
Accordingly to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a connector/accessory/equipment comprising a recessed edge for receiving at least a material having a design. Conveniently, the material is held in the recess by a flat planar plate as a cover therefor. In an altemative embodiment the material in the recess is protected by the cover having the flange for friction attachment to the connectors/accessories.
Conveniently, the cover is polymerous cover/casing with the functional aspect of being able to connect to existing sockets and other electrical accessories and/or equipment currently manufactured (and with any suitable modification in size or shape to future products and ranges of products).
In a further aspect of the invention there is provided a connector/accessory/equipment having a re-attachable cover which is conveniently a flat planar panel with a flange extending outwardly and rearwardly with a flap therefrom so that in use the flange and flap constitute a friction fit onto the connectors/accessories/equipment. The cover may also be mounted by screwing, adhesive suction or clip. Conveniently the material is held in place by the cover.
Another aspect of the present invention is provided a connectors/accessories/equipment having an aperture for receiving a material having a design and/or legend. Conveniently, the material may be held in the aperture by a flat planar plate. The cover may be conveniently transparent (partially transparent).
In another aspect of the present invention there is provided a connector/accessory/equipment comprising a planar surface for receiving at least a material having a design or a legend. Conveniently, the material is held in place by a flat planar plate as a cover therefor. In an alternative embodiment the material is protected by the cover having the flange for friction attachment to the connectors/accessories.
The concept derives from the ability for the home and professional decorator/consumer to insert wallpaper and other decorative matter (or paint/varnish or other substance) underlbeneath or behind the casings thereby visually integrating the Item(s) with existing or proposed colour andlor wallpaper and/or other decorative matter schemes.
The invention allows the consumer to give vent to his or her or their own creativity.
And as there is no all requirement to remove the casing of existing items (and possibly expose potentially dangerous electrical wiring) the application of the invention could be considered safe in the hands of the DIY enthusiast. Further, as the manufacturing costs of these covers/casings are relatively inexpensive the invention must by considered a highly commercial prospect.
Whether the Item be existing or futuristic the fundamental principle remains the same. The invention can be applied to the 'surface' of any consumer Item (housed in the home, office or industrial environment) that is connected/or is intended to be connected to electricity that the owner or keeper of the item wishes to alter, change, customise, camouflage or conceal the appearance or look of.
As the product range of Britain's leading producer of plastic electrical connectors/accessories alone number in excess of 1,000 items it is not possible, or practical, to provide abstract drawings in respect of all these or the host of other consumer products to which this invention can successfully be applied. So, as it is, perhaps, an item easily recognised and in everyday use, the double plug socket and a 13 amp plug have been selected to demonstrate the different forms the invention takes.
However, it should be clearly understood that the covers/casings described below may be completely transparent and that any outlines made to demonstrate their shape are for illustrative purposes only. But as previously stated the covers/casings can as easily be partially coloured or opaque.
The cover/casing is moulded to fit closely over existing electrical connector Items with holes to allow access to: a) leads/cables b) pi ns/pl ugs/prongs/ftise(s)/fusepanels/dials/bulbs/lightpanels/levers/handles/ knobs/switches etc., and (if required) d)screws Once the decorative material or matter (a scrap of wallpaper for exarnple) has been cut to shape (preferably using the template provided) and is in positibn, the cover/casing is 'snapped' into place over the Item or screwed on using existing screws.
(Dimensional drawings figure 9/10/11 demonstrate how the invention can be applied to future consumer range(s) and/or product(s) using an electrical double three pin plug socket; a 13 amp plug; two forms of light switches as examples.) The specific embodiment of the invention wili now be described by using the above listed as examples with reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating both a cover, and cover and electrical connector in accordance with the present invention in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of casing 1 having a flat planar surface 2 with rearwardly extending flanges 3 extending outwardly from each edge 4. The casing is able to be fitted to a surface by the use of screws where holes 5 have been cut in the casing 1 for the purpose and when in use the flange 4 constitutes a friction fit. Further, the socket has holes 6 cut to allow the pins of a 13 amp electrical plug socket to pass through the casing and make contact with the electrical connector. In addition holes have been cut for a switch(s) 7; Figure 2 shows a front view of a template from which wallpaper or other decorative material or matter is cut if the casing is 'screw on' (figure 6 )and there is no requirement to change the look of the sides of the socket. The holes to be cut would be of a sufficient size to allow for switch(s) 7 pins of the plug 6 and screws 5 to pass through the decorative matter without damaging it or interfering with the functions of 5, 6 or 7.; Figure 3 is a front view of a template from which wallpaper or other decorative material or matter is cut if the casing is screw on (figure 7) and there is a requirement is to change almost all of the visible surface area of the socket. The same requirements as in 5, 6 & 7 together with ensuring that extending flange 4 was sufficiently big enough to be tailored by the user to fit flush; Figure 4 shows a front view of a template from which wallpaper or other decorative material or matter is cut if the casing is 'snap on' (figure 8) and there is no requirement to change the look of the sides of the socket. There are no holes for screws. 6 & 7 are as stated in figure 2 above; Figure 5 is a front view of a template from which wallpaper or other decorative material or matter is cut if the casing is 'snap on' (figure 8) and there is a requirement to change almost all of the visible surface area of the socket. There are no holes for screws. 6, 7 & 3 are as stated in Figure 3 above; Figure 6 shows a front view of a flat planar panel cover with holes 1 for switch(s) 7 pins of 13 amp plug 6 and 5 so that it can be screwed on an electrical socket; Figure 7 shows a perspective view of a casing that can be friction fitted by use of flange 3, and/or screwed on an electrical socket; Figure 8 is similar to Figure 7 but shows a casing that is a 'snap on' variation; Figure 9 shows a 'slip in'slip on' groove 8 on a front face 2 of an electrical socket for viewing a re-attachable clear casing. When wallpaper or other decorative material or matter is placed in the groove it hides the presence of any screws; Figure 10 is similar to Figure 9 but without cover 9; Figure 11 shows clear 'slip in' plate for covering design carrying material located in the groove of figure 10.
Figure 12 is a side view of a 13 amp plug 1 with three pins 2 of which the casing(s) 3 & 4 are fitted together by the use of screws cut in the casing. Further holes have been cut in the casing to allow the pins of the plug to pass through and make contact with an electrical socket; Figure 13 is the perspective view of casing having a flat planar surface 4 with rearwardly extending flanges B extending outwardly from each edge A; Figure 14 shows a side view of 'slip in'/'slip on' groove 6 casing; Figure 15 shows groove 6 on the front face of a plug for viewing a re-attachable clear casing 1. When wallpaper or other decorative material or matter is placed in the groove it hides the presence of any screws; Figure 16 shows the clear 'slip-in' plate for covering design carrying material located in the groove 6 of figure 15; Figure 17 shows the front face of the plug with the decorative material in located in the groove; Figure 18 shows the side view of the plug with a re-attachable cover/casing. The size and shape of pins 2 may require some initial adjustment for them to pass safely through the cover/casing of the electrical socket; Figure 19 shows template 10 from which decorative material is cut to fit inner casing 3 in Figure 18 above; Figure 20 shows decorative material 5 cut to shape and in place; Figure 21 shows outer casing 9 secured over 5 and 3; Figure 22 is side view of a plug into which wallpaper and other decorative material is fed into slot 12 (either by itself or with the use of a clear plate supplied for the purpose. The plug has an attached outer casing 11 which may be transparent (partially transparent), opaque or partially coloured. As with figure 18 above the shape and size of the pins may need modification; Figure 23 is the optional clear plate onto which decorative material may be fixed before insertion into the plug; Figure 24 is 'SnagOn' type plug cover. The outer casing is a re-attachable clear casing 4. Pins 2 may need modification; Figure 25 shows a side view of the outer casing that is friction fitted to the surface of the inner casing 3 by use of flanges B. It can just as easily be made more permanent with the use of screws1 clips or adhesive.
Figure 26 shows the decorative material 10 cut to shape from template; Figure 27 shows side view of plug with both decorative material and clear 'snap on' cover in place.
Figure 28 shows a perspective view of casing 1 having a flat planar surface 2 with rearwardly extending flanges 3 extending outwardly from each edge 4. The casing is able to be fitted to a surface by the use of screws where holes 5 have been cut in the casing 1 for the purpose and when in use the flange 4 constitutes a friction fit. Further, the casing has holes 6 cut to allow switches to have free movement as they pass through the casing and make contact with the electrical connector.
Figure 29 shows a perspective view of a casing that can be friction fitted by use of flange 3 and/or screwed on an electrical light switch.
Figure 30 is a front view of a template from which wallpaper or other decorative material or matter is cut if the casing is 'snap on'. Alternatively, the template may also be used to display legends 7.
Figure 31 shows a 'slip in'/1slip on' groove 8 on a front face 2 of an electrical light 'touch' switch for viewing a re-attachable clear casing. When wallpaper or other decorative material or matter is placed in the groove it hides the presence of any screws.
Figure 32 shows a casing that is a 'snap on' variation.
The invention is easily removed, and can just as easily be made a more permanent fixture.
