Abstract
A can for beverages having ring pull openings 9, 11 in each end face 5, 7 of the can 1 provides access to two compartments 13, 15 formed by a partitioned wall 17 midway between the end faces 5, 7. The can 1 enables half the volume of the drink to be drunk saving the second half of the drink which is sealed by the partitioned wall 17 for another occasion and thus reducing waste.
Description
A Beverage Can
The present invention relates to a beverage can which has a number of compartments for storage of a beverage.
Typically drinks cans have a single opening for access to the drink contained within the can. However, once the can is opened, it can not be resealed and, therefore, the contents, invariably, do not keep and have to be drunk at once. This is particularly the case with fizzy drinks which go flat if left with the can opened. The drink is then unpleasant to drink and is wasted. The standard volume of a drinks can is 330ml, and smaller cans have been developed to help prevent such waste. However, these smaller cans are cumbersome to carry when a large number is desired, for example, on picnics etc.
The present invention seeks to overcome the above disadvantage by providing a can comprising at least two compartments for storage of a beverage and opening means for access to each of the at least two compartments.
Preferably, the can comprises two compartments with an opening at each end of the can and a partition wall parallel to the end faces of the can to divide the can in half. This reduces the volume of drink which must be drunk once the can is opened since only one compartment is opened at any one time. Different drinks can be stored in each compartment so that a number of drinks are carried in a single can. It could, for example, be provided with mixers and spirit drinks in each compartment so that it can easily be transported in a single can. Furthermore, once one half of the can has been emptied, the second half can be kept cool by burying it in the sand or in ice when on picnics. Of course, any number of compartments could be provided, and the compartments might hold differing volume of drinks.
Alternatively, the can could be divided longitudinally with openings for each compartment in one end of the can. A single opening might be provided having a sliding arrangement to give access to each half of the can or pivotable end so that the opening is positioned over any one of the compartments.
Further, the partition wall forming the compartment in the can could be punctured on opening the can at one end allowing the two halves of the drinks to mix.
The can may be pressurised and the partition wall designed to withstand the internal pressure on opening so that the partition wall seals the compartments and access is gained to only one compartment. The partition wall may be flexible. The openings may be sealed by a conventional ring pull arrangement, the openings not being aligned to prevent any liquid left in the second half from leaking out. Preferably the openings are positioned on opposite sides of the end faces.
The present invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a can in accordance to a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
With reference to the figure, the can 1 comprises a substantially cylindrical side wall 3 which is closed at each end by end faces 5, 7. Each end face 5, 7 has a standard ring pull 9, 11. The ring pulls 9, 11 allowing opening of each compartment, the openings being positioned at opposite sides of the longitudinal axis A-A of the can.
The can 1 is divided into two compartments 13, 15 by a partition wall 17 which is circumferentially sealed to the cylindrical side wall 3 substantially midway between the end faces 5, 7.
The can may be of a standard size, for example, 330 ml, each compartment providing half the volume of beverage. Once one ring pull is opened it allows access to the drink in one compartment only.
In alternative arrangements, the partitioned wall might be positioned so as to provide differing volumes of liquid, for example, to provide a mixer and a spirit drink in a single container. Further, the partition could be arranged to puncture on the opening of the can so that the two drinks mix.
In the light of this disclosure, modifications of the described embodiment, or within the scope of the appended claims would now become apparent to the person skilled in the art.
