Abstract
231,961. Ingram, H. Jan. 21, 1924. Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves.-In apparatus for sterilizing and similarly treating food in vessels as described in Specification 229,067, having a tank containing water heated by steam coils and Bourdon tubes or like pressure gauge devices operated in accordance with the pressure and temperature in the tank and controlling electromagnets which operate valves to admit fluid to the tank from a pressure reservoir or to allow it to escape as required, the device controlled by the temperature in the tank consists of a Bourdon tube connected to a bulb 32 placed in a chamber 29 in the tank 10, the chamber 29 being filled with liquid, and the Bourdon tube and the bulb 32 being also completely filled with liquid. The valve 20 admitting pressure-fluid to the tank 10 is operated by liquid acting on a piston 88 in a cylinder 87. The liquid is admitted by a pipe 83 and normally escapes through an opening 85 to a pipe 86 without moving the piston. When the electromagnet 71 is excited by the action of the Bourdon tube it moves a valve rod 78 to close the hole 85; when the liquid operates the piston 88 to open the valve 20. The means by which the Bourdon tubes &c. operate the electromagnets are identical with those described in Specification 229,067.
