Abstract

A plastics (L) is applied in a dry manner to a sheet of glass (G) using an adhesive (A). The adhesive may be a pressure or contact adhesive. The film may be urged onto the glass by a pressure roller (P).

Description

LAMINATED GLASS The invention relates to the lamination of glass or glass substitute by an application of a plastics film to one or more surfaces of the glass. Such techniques are known but they usually involve the use of adhesive which needs to be wetted. That can present a problem especially where later the object is to be used in an environment where moisture cannot be tolerated, for example the interior of a sealed double glazing unit.
It is one object of this invention to provide a method of laminating the pane of glass which does not require the use of a liquid.
According to the invention in one aspect there is provided a dry method of applying a plastics film having thermal properties on to a sheet of glass or glass substitute, the method comprising contacting the adhesive side of a plastics film having an adhesive layer with one surface of the glass sheet, and then applying pressure to secure the film uniformly on to the glass surface.
Preferably the adhesive is a pressure or contact adhesive.
Preferably a release liner is present on the film, which is first removed before the film is contacted with the glass.
Preferably the method includes passing the film contacted with the glass under a pressure roller.
In another aspect the invention provides a multiple glazed unit comprising two or more panes of glass, at least one of which has a plastics film on a surface thereof.
In order that the invention may be well understood it will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which: Figure l is a schematic side elevation of an method of applying a laminate to a pane of glass; Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of a sealed double glazed of the invention.
A film L is unreeled from a reel R, the film carrying a contact adhesive A covered by a release liner C. The web is passed through a release cover removal station S, the liner then being passed to a disposal site. The adhesive face of the web is then passed to the leading edge of a pane of glass G, on a table T. Relative movement is applied to cause the assembly of web on glass to pass beneath a pressure roller P, to press the web on to the glass under uniform pressure. The method has been carried out without wetting of the film or glass and the product is a pane of glass having a web tightly secured thereto.
The resultant laminate glass may then be assembled into a double glazing unit D, having panes G1, G2, with webs Wl, W2 on the inside, as shown in Figure 2. The laminate enhances the thermal properties of the unit, depending on the composition. In the invention the glass may be provided by a sheet of glass, or a substitute such as clear plastics material in rigid form. The glass substitute may also be a polycarbonate or similar web in cellular form of the types made by General Electric 'tEXAN" or Rohm & Haas as ' RALON".
Suitable plastics materials include polycarbonate, acrylic, polyester, PVC, polystyrene, polypropylene, ethylene fluoride and other fluorocarbons.
The film may be any of the plastics materials just mentioned or their equivalents, alone or in combination. The laminate films may have a metallised layer on the same or opposite side as the adhesive.
The film may be applied to any glass surface to be in use, the side facing out of a room, the side facing into a room, or the face of a glazing cavity.
The roller may be a natural or synthetic rubber or the like, and applies a uniform pressure to remove any air between the film and the glass and to ensure flow of the adhesive across the faces to make the adhesive invisible.

Claims (7)

1. A dry method of applying a plastics film having thermal properties on to a sheet of glass or glass substitute, the method comprising contacting the adhesive side of a plastics film having an adhesive layer with one surface of the glass sheet or glass substitute, and then applying pressure to secure the film uniformly on to the glass surface.
2. A method according to Claim 1, wherein the adhesive is a pressure or contact adhesive.
3. A method according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein a release liner is present on the film, which is first removed before the film is contacted with the glass.
4. A method according to any preceding Claim, including passing the film contacted with the glass under a pressure roller.
5. A method according to Claim 4, wherein the roller is natural or synthetic rubber.
6. A method according to any preceding Claim, wherein the pressure is applied to remove air between the glass and the film and to cause the adhesive to flow to become invisible.
7. A sealed multiple glazed unit comprising two or more panes of glass, at least one of which has a plastics film on a surface thereof.
