1421854 Laminates MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 19 Jan 1973 2964/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] A transparent reflective sheet material for use as solar control film or in solar control products comprises a transparent, flexible thermoplastic polymeric film, e.g. of polyethylene terephthalate, acrylic polymer or polyvinyl fluoride, having on one surface a transparent reflective metallic layer and an adhesive uniformly adhered over the metallic layer, the adhesive being a 2À5-25 microns thick coating of an actinically curable polyester containing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and an amount of a free radical photocatalyst sufficient to initiate vinyl polymerization when exposed to light in the wavelength range of 3000 to 7000 Angstrom units, the coating being transparent and sunlight-stable when cured. The exposed adhesive surface may be covered with a removable release liner, e.g. silicone-treated paper or polypropylene or polyester film or coating of water-soluble material, e.g. methyl cellulose, or the opposite surface of the film may be treated with a low adhesion coating when the solar control film is wound upon itself in roll form. The metallic layer may be of gold, silver, bronze, nickel or aluminium. After removal of any protective covering or coating the sheet material may be pressed on to a rigid glazing material, e.g. of glass, polymethyl acrylate or polycarbonate, and the adhesive cured by exposure to light in the wavelength range of 3000 to 7000 Angstrom units. The laminate produced may be shaped by thermo forming. The adhesive may comprise by weight, 100 parts polyester resin containing 1-6 millimoles of ethylenic unsaturation per gram, 30-100 parts unsaturated monomer, 2-50 parts catalyst and up to 100 parts of an addition promoting additive, e.g. polymethylmethacrylate, polyvinyl formal or butyral or phenoxy, polyaryl sulphone or hydroxyl functional acrylic resins. The polyester may be prepared from maleic anhydrides, isophthalic acid and propylene glycol, maleic anhydride, o-phthalic acid, adipic acid and diethylene glycol, fumaric acid, maleic anhydride, ethylene glycol and dipropylene glycol or phthalic acid, fumaric acid and propylene glycol. Suitable unsaturated monomers are vinyl acetate, butyl acrylate, lauryl or methyl methacrylate, diallyl phthalate, triallyl cyanurate, styrene, vinyl toluene and divinyl benzene, and the catalyst, which may be used in admixture with a thermal catalyst, e.g. tert-butyl peroctoate, may be benzoin, a benzoin ether, azo compound, diazanium salt or benzophenone derivative. The metallic layer may be covered with a protective layer of polyester resin prior to application of the adhesive.
