Abstract

A method of trimming a seat 30 is disclosed in which a seat backboard 10 and a seat frame 32 are assembled in to a skeleton 10, 32. An overlay 31 is positioned against the skeleton 10, 32 and a seat cover 33 is pulled over the front of the overlay 31 and backboard 10. The seat cover 33 has a rubber welt 35 stitched to it, which is inserted into a retaining groove 11 formed around the rear face of the backboard 10. Compression of the welt 35 in the groove 11 keeps the seat cover 33 in position.

Description

A Seat for a Motor Vehicle This invention relates to seats for motor vehicles and in particular to a method of fixing a seat cover to a seat for a motor vehicle.
It is known to provide padded seats in motor vehicles with seat covers in the form of an envelope which is pulled over the assembly and fixed in position by sewing. Such seat covers are difficult and labour intensive to apply to vehicle seats in large volumes.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved seat for a motor vehicle.
According to the invention there is provided a seat for a motor vehicle comprising a seat frame, a backboard and a seat cover fixed over the seat frame and backboard, wherein the backboard includes a retaining groove formed in it and the seat cover includes an elastomeric welt fixed to the seat cover around part of its edge, the welt being substantially complimentary to the retaining groove such that the seat cover is fixed to the backboard by capture of the welt in the groove.
The seat may further comprise an overlay of a compliant material positioned between the backboard and the seat cover.
The retaining groove may be formed in the rear face of the backboard and may extend substantially around the edge of the backboard.
The seat may further comprise captive clips in the retaining groove to capture the welt in said groove.
The seat frame and backboard may be formed integrally.
T'1e invention also provides a method of fixing a seat cover to a seat for a motor vehicle comprising a seat frame and a backboard having an integral retaining groove, the method comprising the steps of: a/ placing a seat cover over the seat frame and backboard; and b/ capturing a welt fixed to the seat cover around part of its length in the retaining groove.
The method may further comprise the steps of positioning an overlay of a compliant material between the backboard and the seat cover.
The method may further comprise the step of positioning captive clips in the retaining groove to capture the welt in said groove.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an isometric view of a backboard of a seat according to the invention; and Figure 2 shows an assembled seat having the backboard shown in Figure 1 and is a section through the seat corresponding to line A-A to A-A of Figure 1.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, a backboard 10 of a motor vehicle front seat has a retaining groove 11 formed therein which extends around the sides and across the top of a rear face 12 of the backboard 10.
The backboard 10 further comprises joining members 13, 14 for attaching the backboard 10 to a seat frame 32 to form a seat skeleton 10, 32.
An overlay made of a compliant material in the form of a foam backing 31 is positioned against the skeleton 10, 32. The foam backing 31 is preformed along its front side 31A to the approximate desired shape of the front face of a seat back 30. The rear side of the foam backing 31 is pre-formed to adapt itself to the form of the skeleton 10, 32.
When the skeleton 10, 32 has been assembled and the foam backing 31 placed in position, a seat cover 33 is attached. The seat cover 33 is provided over the backing 31 and has a seat face 33A which is complimentary to the front side 31A of the foam backing 31. The seat cover 33 further comprises an edge 34 with a rubber welt 35 stitched to it and is pulled over the foam backing 31 and backboard 10 to give the seat back 30 its final shape.
The rubber welt 35 is thicker than width of the groove 11 so that as it is inserted into the groove 11, the welt 35 is compressed. The compression of the welt 35 captures it in the groove 11 and keeps the seat cover 33 in position.
The method of affixing the seat cover 33 described above provides a seat back 30 which is easy to assemble by inserting the welt 35 into the groove 11. There are no large gaps between the backboard 10 and the seat cover 33, giving a neat outward appearance to the seat back 30. The trimming method further results in stronger retention of the seat cover 33 than by conventional seam stitching, which could be beneficial during airbag deployment.
It is possible to provide metal clips (not shown) for stronger welt retention, in which case these would be inserted into the groove 11 before the welt 35 and used to grip the welt 35 before trimming the seat 30.
