Abstract
A glazing bar assembly 1 is mounted on a rafter 2 to support one or more glazing panels 3, 4 of a glazed roof. The assembly has a base member 5 having a gasket 6, 6' for sealing the lower surface 7 of each panel 3, 4. The gasket has an elongate substantially rigid body 22 engaging the base member with an abutment surface 24 for engagement by the lower panel surface and sealing means 23 preferably having three projections 29 of flexible material on the abutment surface to seal the panel surface. The rigid body clips onto the base member using projections 27, 28, while the flexible sealing means ensures proper sealing of the lower panel surface. The gasket may also include a flexible tail portion 30 to engage the side of the rafter and hide the intersection with the glazing bar assembly.
Description
GASKET FOR GLAZING BAR ASSEMBLY
This invention relates to a gasket for a glazing bar assembly of the kind adapted to be mounted on a rafter to support at least one glazing panel of a glazed roof.
A glazing bar assembly of the kind set forth usually comprises a base member of aluminium secured to the rafter, with the gasket mounted on it to seal against a lower edge surface of the glazing panel, and a cap member engageable with the base to seal the upper surface of the panel.
The assembly may support and seal two adjacent glazing panels. The panels may be of glass, or multi-wall polycarbonate.
Known gaskets for the assembly comprise an elongate soft flexible member of rubber or plastics, applied to a surface of the base member on which the panel rests. The member may also be arranged to conceal the side edge of the base member to improve the appearance of the assembly.
The known gaskets provide a good seal, but because of the soft and flexible nature of the material have several disadvantages. The main disadvantages are that the gasket can be difficult to fit satisfactorily, and that it tends to creep outwards in use, as the glazing panels expand and contract. Furthermore, such a gasket tends to get dirty during installation, and is difficult to clean. It may also discolour after some time, so that the appearance of the assembly is affected, especially if it also conceals the side edge of the base member.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, a gasket for a base member of a glazing bar assembly of the kind set forth comprises an elongate substantially rigid body adapted to engage with the base member, the body having an abutment surface with which the lower surface of the glazing panel is adapted to engage, and sealing means of flexible material provided on the abutment surface for engagement by the glazing panel.
The substantially rigid body is much easier to fit onto the base member, as it can be clipped or slid onto a mounting part of the base member, while the sealing means still ensures sealing of the lower surface of the glazing panel.
Preferably the sealing means is provided only on the abutment surface with which the glazing panel engages. As the rigid body will not creep with expansion and contraction of the glazing panels, any creep is limited to the sealing means, and is not significant, as the sealing means covers a relatively small area of the gasket. Conveniently the sealing means comprises one or more projections extending along the gasket.
Preferably three projections are provided, spaced across the abutment surface.
The body is preferably made of a substantially rigid plastics material, which may have some inherent resilience. The material can be chosen so that it resists dirt on installation, is easy to clean and will not discolour. The body preferably has a portion adapted to conceal the side of the base member.
With a glazing bar assembly of the kind set forth, the rafter is usually the same width as the base member, to provide a neat appearance.
Structurally, it may not need to be as wide, as its strength is dependent on its depth rather than its width. However, if a narrower rafter is used, the edge of the lower surface of the base member will be visible, detracting from the appearance of the assembly.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, a gasket for a base member of a glazing bar assembly of the kind set forth comprises an elongate member having a first portion mounted on the base member including sealing means for the lower surface of the glazing panel, a second portion adapted to conceal the side edge of the base member and a flexible tail portion adapted to engage the side of the rafter.
This gasket enables the rafter to be narrower than the base member while retaining the attractive appearance of the assembly as the tail portion conceals the edge of the lower surface of the base member.
The flexibility of the tail portion means that it is able to be used with different widths of rafter, as it can still bridge the gap between the edge of the base member and the edge of the rafter. Preferably the tail portion is the same colour as the rest of the gasket, and is of flexible plastics material.
The first and second portions of the gasket may be of substantially rigid plastics material, with the first portion having sealing means as in the first aspect of the invention.
Both aspects of the invention are illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a cross-section through a glazing bar assembly
mounted on a rafter; and
Figure 2 is an enlarged view of the gasket of the assembly of
Figure 1.
The glazing bar assembly 1 shown in Figure 1 is elongate and mounted on a rafter 2 to support two adjacent glazing panels 3, 4 of a glazed roof. The panels 3, 4 may be of glass, or multi-wall polycarbonate sheet.
The glazing bar assembly 1 comprises a base member 5 having a respective gasket 6, 6' for sealing the lower surface 7 of each glazing panel 3, 4, and a cap member 8 for sealing their upper surfaces 9. The base member 5 is an aluminium extrusion having a fixing portion 10 by which it is screwed to the rafter 2, and from which extends a central upstand 11 comprising two spaced arms 12, 13, each having an internal tooth formation 14, and a pair of arms 15, 16, extending sideways. Each arm 15, 16 terminates in a substantially T-shaped arrangement 17, with an upstanding portion 18, and an end portion 19 with a longer part 20 extending towards the upstand 11 and a shorter part 21 projecting in the opposite direction beyond the portion 18. The T-shaped arrangement 17 is designed to mount and retain a gasket 6.
As can be seen in the left-hand side of Figure 1, and more clearly in Figure 2, the gasket 6 has a body 22 of substantially rigid plastics material, and sealing means 23 for the panel 3. The body 22 is substantially U-shaped, with an abutment portion 24 carrying the sealing means 23, and from each end of which an arm 25, 26 projects. The arms 25, 26 are of unequal length, and each terminates in a respective inturned lip 27, 28. In use, the abutment portion 24 of the gasket engages the upper surface of the end portion 19 of the T-shape 17, the shorter arm 25 with its lip 27 encloses the end of the part 20, and the longer arm 26 encloses and conceals the portion 18, with its lip 28 engaging the end of the arm 15. It will be noted that the part 21 of the T-shape engages the arm 26, but the portion 18 is spaced from the arm 26. The lips 27, 28 hold the body 22 in place on the T-shape 17, and the body 22 can be clipped or slid onto the T-shape 17.
The sealing means 23, carried on an abutment surface of the abutment portion 24 of the body 22, for engagement with the surface 7 of the panel 3, comprises three spaced elongate projections 29 of flexible plastics material. Each has a semi-circular cross-section, and can be coextruded with the body 22.
The gasket 6 also has a flexible tail portion 30, in accordance with the second aspect of the invention. The tail portion 30 extends from the lip 28, and has a curved free end 31 adapted to engage the side of the rafter 2, which is narrower than the base member 5. The body 22 and tail portion 30 are co-extruded, and are the same colour.
The cap member 8 is of a known design, and is of substantially rigid plastics material. It has a curved top piece 32, each end of which has a co-extruded flexible plastics lip 33 for engagement with a respective panel 3, 4. The cap member 8 also has a pair of legs 34, 35, each terminating in a tooth 36 for engagement with the tooth formation 14 on a respective arm 12, 13 on the base member 5. It will be appreciated that the tooth formation 14 allows for different spacings between the cap and base members, to accommodate different thicknesses of glazing panel 3, 4.
When the assembly 1 is to be installed on a rafter 2, the gaskets 6 are mounted on the T-shape 17 by clipping or sliding. The base member 5 is then attached to the rafter 2 by screws (not shown), and the panels 3, 4 put on the arms 15, 16 at the appropriate angle. Figure 1 shows a range of angles for the panels, but in each case the edge of the panel engages the outer surface of an arm 12 or 13, and its lower surface 7 engages the abutment portion 24 of the gasket 6, and is sealed by the projections 29. The cap member 8 is then put on to retain and seal the upper surfaces of the panels 3, 4.
It will be appreciated that the gasket 6 is easy to put on the base member 5, and that the rigid body 22 will not creep in use as the panels 3, 4 expand and contract. The plastics of the body 22 can be chosen to be easy to clean and not to discolour with time. The longer arm 26 of the gasket 6 conceals the portion 18 of the base member 5, and the tail portion 30 conceals the lower surface of the arm 15 that projects beyond the rafter 2. This all contributes to the neat appearance of the assembly. Where the base member is 48 mm wide, the rafter 2 may be 10 mm narrower, so that each tail portion 30 covers a 5 mm gap.
If the rafter 2 is the same width as the base member 5, a gasket 6' without a tail portion 30 can be used, as shown on the right-hand side of
Figure 1. As well as omitting the tail portion 30, the arm 26' of the gasket is modified. The lip 28 is omitted, and the internal contour of the arm 26 follows that of the portion 18 of the T-shape 17, to ensure that the gasket 6' is properly retained on the T-shape. The external contour of the arm 26 is curved, to ensure a neat appearance while still concealing the portion 18.
In a modification (not shown), the tail portion 30 could be used with other types of gasket having abutment and concealing portions, in accordance with the second aspect of the invention.
