Abstract

An oral hygiene device comprising an elongate handle and short plastic bristles of eg. 2-3 mm in length inclined from their roots at an angle of approximately eg. 60{ from the handle and directed back towards the handle. The bristles may be of a similar form to those of conventional toothbrushes in order to provide a raking action on the tongue or alternatively they may be spatulate to provide a scraping action. The device may exist on its own or be incorporated onto a conventional toothbrush where the inclined bristles are positioned on the reverse side from the tooth brushing bristles.

Description

An Oral Hygiene Device This invention concerns an oral hygiene device.
While regular tooth brushing is common, it is not unusual to neglect other parts of the mouth. In particular, many people suffer from "furred" tongues, and it is the object of this invention to provide a remedy.
According to the present invention there is provided a tongue scraper comprising a brush with an elongated handle and short bristles inclining from their roots back towards the handle.
Conveniently, this may be incorporated in a tooth brush, the short, angled bristles being on the reverse side from the tooth brushing bristles. However, it may also be independent or "stand alone".
The bristles will generally be of plastics and they may be similar to tooth brush bristles except for their length, which may be of the order of 2-3 mm. Alternatively, they may be of a special shape, such as spatulate, to give a scraping rather than a raking action. The angle at which they incline may be in a wide range, but probably about 60 to the handle will be satisfactory.
In use, the tongue is simply scraped from rear to front, and the brush is easily washed for subsequent use.

Claims (6)

1. An oral hygiene device comprising a brush with an elongated handle and bristles inclining from their roots back towards the handle.
2. An oral hygiene device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the bristles are on the reverse side from the tooth brushing bristles of a tooth brush, the handle being common to the device and the tooth brush.
3. An oral hygiene device as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the inclined bristles are of plastics and similar to but shorter than tooth brush bristles to give a raking action.
4. An oral hygiene device as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the bristles are spatulate to give a scraping action.
5. An oral hygiene device as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the length of the inclined bristles is in the range 2 - 3 mm.
6. An oral hygiene device as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the angle of the bristles to the handle is of the order of 600.
