Abstract
231,704. Floyd, W. E., Williams, A., and Godsey, F. E. June 11, 1924. Actuating-mechanism; closure members. - A safety cut-off valve adapted to be used in conjunction with gauges, indicators &c. on steam boilers and adapted to close automatically in the event of the exterior valve casing being broken, has the interior and external valve casing separately formed and connected together by a coupling nut engaging an integral shoulder on the outer part. The. cut-off valve 18 is guided by a spindle 20 provided with helical grooves 19 and co-operates with a seat 17 formed on the end of a steel tube 16 inserted in a flanged casing 10 screwed into the end 12 of a boiler. The inner end of the casing is closed by a ported plug 22 having radial grooves 23, the back of the valve - having similar grooves 24 if desired. The main valve 38 which has an extension 41 adapted to unseat the cut-off valve is actuated by a screwed spindle 35 and is housed in a casing 26 provided with a coned surface 27 held against a corresponding surface on the casing 10 by a coupling nut 42. The casing 26 is formed at 31 with a threaded aperture to receive a test cock 32. Should the exterior casing receive a severe blow, the inner casing will fracture at 44 and allow the cut-off valve to close. In a modification, a grooved ferrule is inserted between the two casings.
