Abstract
Decorative adhesive foils 12,16 are adhered to opposite surfaces 1,7 of an elongate window profile by firstly pressing the foils against the surfaces 6,11 by means of rollers 17,18 (Fig 5) and then advancing the profile and the adhered foils together past a series of further rollers 19-23 (Figs 6-9) arranged such that the foils are wrapped around the profile and pressed against the remaining portions of the surfaces.
Description
ADHESIVE FOIL APPLICATION
The present invention relates to a method in apparatus for adhering at least two foils to different surfaces of an elongate profile.
There are many circumstances in which it is desirable to be able to adhere foils to an elongate profile. One such example is in the window manufacturing industry where profiles are produced from for example UPVC but it is desired to provide a surface finish on the profiles to give them a decorative effect, for example a surface finish having the appearance of teak. It is conventional practice to apply decorative foils to extruded profile in such circumstances.
Generally in the case of window frames it is necessary to apply a foil to opposite sides of the profile, one of those sides being visible in the installed window outside the building and the other being visible from within the building. The conventional approach adopted to date has been to arrange the profile with one surface onto which a decorative foil is to be attached uppermost, to advance the profile beneath a coil of foil an adhesive - carrying surface of which is pressed against the uppermost surface of the profile as it travels beneath the coil, and to use a series of rollers arranged along the path followed by the profile to bend the foil around the upper corners of the profile so as to cover all of the profile surface which in use will be visible. Once a profile has had a foil attached to it in this manner, the profile is inverted so that the side having a foil already attached is lowermost and the process is repeated, that is the profile is again advance beneath the coil of foil which is applied by rollers to the upper surface of the profile.
The above process in which foils are applied one at a time is satisfactory but it would be desirable to be able to increase the rate of production which can be achieved with a single foil applying apparatus by applying two foils simultaneously. In practice however given the sets of rollers which must be provided to advance the profile beneath a dispensing coil it is very difficult to position two coil dispensers one above and one below the advancing profile and as a result no success has been achieved to date in increasing the rate of production of the conventional foil applying apparatus.
It is an objective of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the problems outlined above.
According to the present invention, there is provided a method for simultaneously adhering at least two foils to different surfaces of an elongate profile, each surface including mutually inclined portions lying on opposite sides of corners extending along the length of the profile, wherein a bonding agent is applied to one side of each foil, and, for each surface, the respective foil is adhered to one substantially planar portion of the surface by pressing the side of the foil carrying bonding agent against that portion of the surface, the profile and the adhered foils being advanced together past a series of rollers arranged such that the foils are wrapped around the profile and pressed against the other portions of the surfaces.
The term bonding agent is used herein to indicate any material capable of securely fixing a foil to the surface of the profile. Typically in the case of a UPVC profile onto which a PVC foil is to adhered a suitable bonding agent would be a reactive hotmelt adhesive based on polyurethane prepolymers.
Preferably, for each surface, an edge of the respective foil is adhered to one edge of the surface. With such an arrangement it is generally possible to apply foils from one side only of the profile, one foil being subsequently folded around one side of the advancing profile and the other foil being wrapped around the other side of the advancing profile.
The present invention also provides an apparatus for simultaneously adhering at least two foils to different surfaces of an elongate profile, each surface including mutually inclined portions lying on opposite sides of corners extending along the length of the profile, comprising means for pressing a side of each foil which carries a bonding agent against one substantially planar a portion of the respective surface, means for advancing the profile and the adhered foils together, and a series of rollers arranged such that as the foils advance with the profile they are wrapped around the profile and pressed against the other portions of the surfaces.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figures 1 to 3 illustrate successive stages in the application of a single foil to a profile in accordance with a conventional technique;
Figure 4 shows the final structure of a profile after foils have been applied to opposite sides, each foil being applied in the manner illustrated in figures 1 to 3;
Figures 5 to 9 illustrates successive steps in a process in accordance with the present invention which produces a profile supporting two foils as shown in figure 4; and
Figure 10 illustrates a profile supporting two foils which may be applied to the profile in accordance with the method of the present invention.
Referring to figure 1, a conventional simple profile is shown in section, the profile having an upper surface 1, corners 2 and 3, a hollow interior 4, side surfaces 5 and 6, lower surface 7, corners 8 and 9, and side surfaces 10 and 11. When the profile is installed in a window unit, the surfaces 1, 5, 6, 7, 10 and 11 are visible and it is therefore desirable to cover those surfaces with a decorative foil 12.
As shown in figure 1, the foil 12 is pressed by a roller 13 against the surface 1.
The face of the foil 12 which is bought into contact with the surface 1 carries an appropriate bonding agent. The profile is then advanced by a series of rollers (not shown), drawing the foil 12 with it beneath the roller 13 so that the foil 12 is adhered along the length of the surface 1 of the profile.
As shown in figure 2, further rollers 14 are positioned so as to bend the foil around the corners 2 and 3 towards the surfaces 5 and 6.
As shown in figure 3, further rollers 15 are arranged to press the foil against the surfaces 5 and 6 and as a result the foil 12 is a close neat fit on the surfaces 1, 5 and 6 and extends around the corners 2 and 3.
It is necessary to apply foils to both sides of the profile as shown in figure 4 where a second foil 16 is adhered over the surfaces 7, 10 and 11 and around the corners 8 and 9. This is achieved by taking the profile to which the foil 12 has been adhered from the apparatus, inverting the profile so that the surface 7 is uppermost, and repeating the process described with reference to figures 1 to 3. The end result is a product as shown in figure 4 with the required profiles 12 and 16 permanently adhered to the opposed surfaces of the profile.
The process described with reference to figures 1 to 4 is entirely satisfactory in terms of the reliability with which foils are applied, but each profile must be passed through the foil applying apparatus twice, once for each foil that is to be applied.
Furthermore, it is possible for the profile to be damaged during the second run through the apparatus, although this is a relatively minor problem as compared with the relatively slow rate of production resulting from the fact that each profile must be passed through the apparatus twice.
Referring to figures 5 to 9, a method in accordance with the present invention for achieving the structure shown in figure 4 will now be described. The same reference numerals are used where appropriate. Rather than applying foil 12 to surface 1 and then wrapping the foil around surfaces 5 and 6, as shown one edge of the foil 12 is applied to the surface 6 by a roller 17 and one edge of the foil 16 is applied by a roller 18 to the surface 11. Thus the two foils 12 and 16 can be dispensed from coaxial reels of foil arranged side by side above the track along which the profile is advanced. As the profile is advanced, rollers 19 bend the foils around comers 3 and 9 and the foils are then pressed by rollers 20 and 21 against the surfaces 1 and 7. The rollers 20 may be axially spaced from the rollers 21 along the direction of travel of the profile. As shown in figure 8, the foils are then bent around the corners 2 and 8 by rollers 22 and then as shown in figure 9 the foils are pressed against the surfaces 5 and 10 by rollers 23. The end product is identical to that shown in figure 4, but it will be appreciated that this has been achieved during a single pass of the profile through the apparatus. The rate of production is thus doubled at the relatively minor expense of providing a double foil dispensing mechanism and more foil wrapping rollers.
Then invention may be applied to more complex profile sections than that illustrated in figures 1 to 9. For example as shown in figure 10, two foils 24 and 25 are shown adhered to opposite sides of the profile. The foil 24 will initially be adhered to surface 26, then to surface 27 and finally to surface 28, whereas the foil 25 will initially be adhered to surface 29, then to surface 30 and finally to surface 31.
