Abstract

A rigid parcel shelf 11 for a motor vehicle is pivotable from a first substantially horizontal position (figure 1) in which it covers a luggage compartment 13 of said vehicle to a second upright position in which it may be secured so as to provide a barrier between said luggage compartment and the passenger compartment in order to prevent forward movement of articles from the luggage compartment into the passenger compartment in the event of a frontal impact. The shelf may have a reinforcing frame to which may be secured means 19 to secure the shelf in the upright position, which means may comprise a releasable locking rod engaging in an apertured plate 17 attached to the vehicle side structure. In the upright position the shelf may extend partially or fully to the roof of the vehicle, in the latter case a transparent portion (18 figure 1) in the form of plastic mesh may be provided in the shelf.

Description

A Motor Vehicle This invention relates to motor vehicles and in particular to a motor vehicle of the type having a folding or pivotable rear parcel shelf.
It is well known to provide a motor vehicle with a rear parcel shelf that pivots from a substantially horizontal position to a substantially vertical position when a rear door or hatchback of the motor vehicle is opened.
Similarly it is usual for such a parcel shelf to be removable from the vehicle so as to allow for the carriage of oversized loads or to provide more luggage carrying capacity.
It is a problem with such prior art parcel shelf arrangements that if the parcel shelf has been removed and the luggage compartment filled with a large number of items these can be thrown forward in the event of a severe frontal impact.
It is an object of this invention to overcome the problems associated with the prior art.
According to the invention there is provided a motor vehicle having a passenger compartment in which are located front and rear seats and a pivotable rigid parcel shelf defining in combination with the rear seat and respective side and rear body panels of the vehicle a luggage compartment, the rigid parcel shelf being pivotable from a first substantially horizontal position to a second upright position wherein the parcel shelf is securable in said upright position so as to provide a rigid physical barrier between the luggage compartment and the passenger compartment of the vehicle.
The parcel shelf may include a reinforcing frame.
A securing means used to secure the parcel shelf in the upright position may be attached to the reinforcing frame.
The securing means may have a releasable locking rod for engagement with an apertured plate attached to part of the body structure of the motor vehicle.
The parcel shelf may include a transparent portion.
The transparent portion may be formed by a high strength plastic mesh.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing of which: Fig.l is a schematic cut-away pictorial representation of the rear of a motor vehicle according to the invention showing a parcel shelf in a first position; and Fig.2 is a view similar to Fig.1 but showing the parcel shelf in a second position.
With reference to Figs.1 and 2 there is shown a motor vehicle 5 having a side panel 10 and floor structure 12 forming parts of the body structure.
A rear seat assembly comprising of a seat squab 16 and right and left seatback members 14, 15 is secured to the floor structure 12 of the motor vehicle 5. A rigid rear parcel shelf 11 is pivotally secured to the side body structure 10 of the motor vehicle 5.
As shown in Figure 1 the parcel shelf 11 defines in combination with the right and left seatbacks 14 and 15, the side body structure 10 and a rear panel of the motor vehicle (not shown) a luggage compartment 13.
The parcel shelf is made from a rigid material and has an interior reinforcing frame (not shown) to which is attached a securing means 19 used to secure the parcel shelf in an upright position (as shown in Fig.2).
The securing means 19 includes a releasable locking rod for engagement with an apertured plate 17 attached to the side body structure 10 of the motor vehicle.
The parcel shelf 11 is pivotable from a first substantially horizontal position as shown in Figure 1 to a second upright position as shown in Figure 2. When in said upright position the releasable locking rod of the securing means 19 is engaged with an aperture in the apertured plate 17 at both ends of the parcel shelf 11 thereby securing the parcel shelf 11 in said upright position.
In this position the parcel shelf 11 forms a rigid physical barrier between the luggage compartment 13 and the passenger compartment of the motor vehicle thereby restricting or preventing the forward movement of articles from the luggage area into the passenger area.
In the upright position the parcel shelf 11 also provides a greater luggage storage volume in the luggage compartment 13 than when it is in the horizontal position while providing a rigid physical barrier between the luggage compartment 13 and the passenger compartment of the vehicle.
The parcel shelf may extend partially to the roof of the vehicle or may extend fully up to the roof of the vehicle in which case it is preferable to provide the parcel shelf 11 with a transparent portion in the form of a high strength plastic mesh 18 (not shown on Fig.2 ) so that rearward visibility is not entirely lost.
