Abstract

In a method of operating a landfill site for waste disposal, a covering of permeable, synthetic sheet material is laid over deposited waste material. Preferably the material has apertures or perforations.

Description

Waste Disposal The present invention relates to waste disposal and in particular to an improved method of operating a land fill site.
GB-A-2288598 describes a method of operating a landfill site in which the overnight cover is provided by laying a jute or hessian material over the deposited waste. This cover can be removed at the start of the day, and reused later, or it can be left in place. The material is a natural material.
biodegradable, permeable, and does not occupy a significant volume if left in place.
WO 92/1631 proposes a synthetic covering material which is a mixture of liquid, binder. cellulose and plastics fibres.
WO 95/15825 proposes a non-permeable polyolefin film which uill trap smells' within the site. but may be biodegradable.
The present invention provides a method of operating a landfill site for waste disposal. in which a covering of permeable, synthetic sheet material is laid over deposited waste material.
Preferably a plastics sheet material having apertures or perforations in it. is used. Preferably the material is biodegradable.
The material may be laid in strips which can be fastened together, by stitching. welding, or hooks. for example. A sheet may be weighted to hold it in place.
I have realised that an apertured or perforated plastics sheet can provide significant advantages, for example the availability of the material. The sheet need not be impervious, on the contrary, a pervious sheet provides advantages in avoiding gas build up and allowing drainage through the site.
The apertures or perforations in the sheet are sized to inhibit or prevent trind-blown waste.
Preferably an integral plastics sheet is used, and a mesh type integral sheet can be used.
Reference is made to GB-A-2288598 for details of the operation of a landfill site. using the perforated, integral plastics sheet of my invention.
