Abstract

231,347. Kings Patent Agency, Ltd., (Groh, M. S.). May 21, 1924. Making expanded metal. - Slitted corrugated metal sheets are expanded by a rotating roll having a number of transverse ribs which successively engage and pull out substantially at right angles to the unexpanded part of the sheet successive portions of the sheet which lie between the rows of slits. A corrugated sheet provided with staggered rows of interrupted slits as shown in Fig. 5, is placed on a table 11 which has a depending skirt and is mounted on a support 6 vertically adjusted in a dovetailed guide by a right and left handed screw 9 to suit the size of sheet. The table is held on the support by screws 14 and elongated slots 13 and may be horizontally adjusted to suit the size of sheet, the rear end engaging set screws 16. The edge of the sheet protrudes over the forward edge of the table and the portion immediately in rear is pressed thereon by a bevelled plate 25 which is adjusted by set screws 27 and screws 24 and slots 23 on a cross member 22 projecting from the arms 21 of a frame 17 so that a certain amount of tension is exerted on the sheet. A ribbed roller 20 arranged with its gap 29 in the position shown in Fig. 1 is then rotated so that each successive rib engages the next protruding portion of the sheet and pulls it down in a direction substantially at right angles to the plane of the unexpanded part of the sheet.
