12 Claims. (01. 10l132) This invention relates to duplicating machines of the general type shown in the Marchev Patent 1,993,557.
In machines of this character, the matter of providing the proper margin at the advancing edge of the copy sheets involves considerable difficulty in the provision of margin setting mechanism for holding the copy sheets in position to be engaged with the duplicating band on the platen.
That part of the advancing end of the copy sheet which is not stuck upon the gelatin band is waste so far as the copy is concerned and in the case of master sheets where the copy begins close to the top edge of the sheet, it is necessary to contact all of the copy on the master sheet with the gelatine band if it is to be reproduced upon the copy sheets. Heretofore, a substantial portion of the advancing ends of the master and copy sheets has been left free of the duplicating band in order that the sheets might be properly stripped from the band by the stripping mechanism.
The present invention is embodied in a machine of the type above referred to and includes novel margin determining mechanism and novel stripping mechanism whereby it is possible to reduce the amount of paper required at the advancing end of the master and copy sheets for stripping purposes.
The machine also includes certain novel stripping mechanism whereby the sheets are more evenly gripped throughout their width as they are stripped from the duplicating band.
The objects and features of the invention will become more apparent from the following description of the preferred form of the invention,
reference being made to the accompanying drawings wherein- Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on a vertical plane through a duplicating machine embodying the invention, certain parts being left out for the sake of clearness;

Referring now in detail to the drawings, the present invention is embodied in a duplicating 55 machine of the rotary type having an arcuate platen [0 which is rotatably journalled in a plurality of side frames II and 12. The platen is driven by means of a drive gear 13 from a suitable drive unit 14 and gears 15 and It. A duplicating band I1 is drawn over the platen l0, 5 the opposite ends thereof being wound upon a pair of spindles l8 and 19 carried in platen Ii]. A cam 20 is fixed to one end of the platen l0 and is spaced therefrom by suitable spacers 2| as will be readily understood. 10
A pressure roll 22 is adapted to press sheets into contact with the duplicating band IT on the platen ID in the usual manner, this roll being carried by a shaft 23. A paper feed chute 24 is adapted to guide sheets to a margin device 25 situated adjacent to the pressure roll 22 and carried upon a pair of arms 26 and 21 which are fixed to a shaft 28 that is journalled in an auxiliary framework consisting of side frames 29 and 30 carried by the main side frames II and I2. 20 The arms 26 and 21 are spring pressed toward the position shown in Fig. 1 by a pair of coiled springs 3| and 32. One end of the spring 3| is secured to a post 33 on the frame 30, the other end being secured to a clamp 34 fixed on the shaft 5 28. A post 35 on the frame 29 carries one end of the coiled spring 32, the other end being secured to a clamp 35 fixed on the shaft 28. Suitable means are provided for retracting the margin device 25 as the platen l0 advances in the direc 30 tion of the arrow in Fig. 1 as will be readily understood by those skilled in this art.
The margin device 25 comprises a pair of margin members 31 and 38 which are mounted upon inturned end portions 39 and 40 of the arms 26 35 and 21, respectively. The member 31 consists of a plate having its lower edge turned up as indicated at M to provide a trough. The member 33 consists of a plate mounted upon the plate 31 and provided with a turned-up lower portion 42. 40 The plate 38 is considerably smaller than the plate 31, and the turned-up portion 42 is much shorter than the portion 4|. The plate 31 has a pair of slots 43 and 44, and the plate 38 is adjustably secured to the plate 31 by means of a pair .15 of screw bolts 45 and 16. For normal work where a wide margin is satisfactory, the plate 31 is used, but, where it is desired to effect the saving and advantages of a narrow margin at the advancing end of the master in copy sheets, the plate 38 is attached and adjusted to the desired position to give a margin of the proper length.
Referring now to the stripping mechanism, this mechanism comprises a main stripping roll 41 which may desirably be made up from a plurality of rubber sections such as 48, 49, 50, and 5| separated by reduced sections such as 52, the entire roll being mounted upon a shaft 53. A second roll 54 cooperates with the roll 41 and is yieldingly pressed toward the roll 41 as will be hereinafter more fully described. The roll 54 is preferably constructed of metal and has a knurled surface. The shaft 53 is journalled in a pair of frame members 55 and 58 which are supported upon a tie rod 5! connecting the main frames I! and [2. The shaft 53 has a head 58 on one end thereof, and the other end projects through the frame 55 where it is secured in a sleeve 59 that is driven by the drive gear It for the platen Iii, a gear 58 being formed upon the sleeve 59 for this purpose. The sleeve 59 is journalled on a stub shaft El mounted in the side frame H. The roll 54 is journalled in a pair of bearing blocks 62 and 63 which are mounted in recesses 64 provided in extensions 65 and 6fi of the frames 55 and 56. The roll 54 is pressed against the roll 41 with the required amount of tension by a pair of adjusting screws 61 and 68 screw threaded into the extensions 65 and 66 and a pair of springs 6'! and 68 adapted to engage the bearing blocks 62 and 63.
For the purpose of guiding sheets from a duplicating band to the stripping rolls 4?! and 54, I provide a shaft 10 which is rotatably mounted in the frames 55 and 56 and which carries a pair of arms H and 12 keyed thereon by keys i3 and [4. The arms H and 12 are in the nature of bell crank arms and have downwardly extending portions such as indicated at 15 in Figs. 3 and 4 to which a pair of springs 16 and 11 are fixed. The springs I6 and 11 are mounted upon the frames 55 and 56 at their opposite ends and are under tension so as to tend to turn the arms H and 12 in a counterclockwise direction.
The shaft 10 on the end adjacent the side frame l2 carries an arm T8 which is keyed thereto by a key 19. This arm is connected by a pair of bolts 80 and 8| to a cam arm 82 which carries a cam roller 83 that is adapted to ride upon the cam 20 and rock the shaft H1 in a clockwise direction against the pull of the springs 16 and 11. For the purpose of adjusting the angular position of the cam arm 82 with respect to the arm 18, the arm 82 has elongated slots 84 and 85 in which the bolts 80 and 8| ride.
The arms H and I2 carry a third stripping roll 86 at their free ends. This roll is considerably smaller in diameter than the roll 54 and, as shown best by Fig. 3, is adapted to extend into the path of the platen Hi and intercept the advancing end of a sheet I00 on-the duplicating band H. The arms H and 12 are curved so as to permit the roll 86 to approach almost into contact with the advancing end of the duplicating band I! before the cam 20 engages the cam roller 63 to rock the shaft 10 clockwise and to move the arms H and 12 with the roll;86 out of the path of the advancing duplicating band.
The movement of the cam roller 83 over the advancing end of the cam 20 moves the roll 86 into contactwith the driven stripping roll 41, as shown in Fig. 4. This movement is accomplished while. the platen It] is carrying the sheet if! in the direction indicated by the arrows in Figs. 3 and 4. The direction of movement of the roller 85 by arms H and 12 is up and outward away from the platen IE! which facilitates maintaining the sheet I00 in contact with the roll 86 until the roll 86 engages with the driven roll 4'! whereupon the rotation of the roll 41 will cause advancement of the sheet I 00 by rotating both the rolls 54 and 86. The roll 86 will advance the sheet to the roll 54, and the roll 54 will continue the stripping action. The roll 86 may be of any suitable material, either metal or some other substance such as rubber.
It will be noted that the arms H and i2 carry abutments 8'! which engage rubber cushions 85: mounted on flanges 8!] on the frames 55 and 56. This construction serves to eliminate the shock and noise incident to the springs 16 and Ti pulling the arms H and 12 back into the position shown in Fig. 3 after the cam roller 83 rides off the cam 25. The rear ends of the frames 55 and 56 are secured to a tie rod 99 shown in Fig. 1. The rod 5'! connecting the frames 55 and 55 is utilized for mounting a receiving tray 92 thereon.
Referring now to the construction of the rolls 41, 54, and 86, it has been found, that, owing to the size of these rolls and the pressure necessary for them to adequately grip and feed sheets fed therebetween, there is a tendency for the rolls to' bend apart between the ends thereof so that, while the paper may begripped firmly adjacent the opposite ends of the rollers, it is not gripped at the middle. In order to overcome this difficulty, we have found that, by applying a limited taper to one of the rolls, this difiiculty may be overcome completely and the paper gripped evenly throughout its width. The enlarged portions such as 48, 49, 58, and 5| of the roll 41 are, therefore, ground down so that they taper from a maximum diameter at the center of the roll 41 to a minimum diameter at the opposite ends thereof.
As an example of the degree of taper utilized, the maximum diameter of the roll 41 at the center is 1.3 inches in one machine. The roll tapers to a diameter of 1.29 inches at the outer ends of the enlarged sections 50. The inner ends of the sections 49 have a diameter of 1.27 inches and taper outwardly so that the diameter at the outer ends of the sections 48 is 1.26 inches. These figures, of course, are given merely as an example of a working structure since obviously the diameter may be gradually reduced or the roll may be tapered according to a predetermined figure so as to obtain good engagement throughout the length of the rolls 41, 54, and 86.
While one embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims in which it is the intention to claim all novelty inherent in the invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.

In a duplicating machine, a frame, an armate platen journalled therein, a duplicating band on said platen, means to rotate said platen, a margin device adjacent said platen and operable to engage a sheet with the advancing edge of said duplicating band so that a short portion of the sheet at the advancing edge thereof is free of said band, stripping mechanism for removing the sheets from said band, said stripping mechanism comprising a pair of stripping rolls, means for driving said stripping rolls. and means to direct the advancing edge of said sheet to said rolls, said last named means comprising a third roll, means mounting said third roll for movement from within the path of the advancing edge of a sheet held on said band for pressing said sheet into holding engagement with one of said stripping rolls for releasing the leading portion of the sheet from said band and directing it to the bite of said stripping rolls, and means for moving said third roll in timed relation to the platen movement.

In a duplicating machine, a frame, an arcuate platen journalled therein, a duplicating band on said platen, means to rotate said platen, a margin device adjacent said platen and operable to engage a sheet with the advancing edge of said duplicating band so that a short portion of the sheet at the advancing edge thereof is free of said'band, stripping mechanism for removing the sheets from said band, said stripping mechanism comprising a pair of stripping rolls, means for driving said stripping rolls, and means to direct the advancing edge of said sheet to said rolls, said last named means comprising a third roll, means mounting said third roll for movement from within the path of the advancing edge of a sheet held on said band for pressing said sheet into holding engagement with one of said stripping rolls for releasing the leading portion of the sheet from said band and directing it to the bite of said stripping rolls, and means for moving said third roll in timed relation to the platen movement, said margin device having a pair of sheet receiving and positioning members with one arranged in advance of the other circumferentially of the platen.

In a duplicating machine, a frame, an arcuate platen journalled therein, a duplicating band on said platen, means to rotate said platen, a margin device adjacent to said platen and operable to engage a sheet with the advancing edge of said duplicating band so that a short portion of the sheet at the advancing edge thereof is free of said band, a stripping roll rotatably mounted adjacent to said platen, means for driving said stripping roll, a second rotatably mounted roll movable into and out of spaced relation to said stripping roll, means for holding said second roll in inwardly spaced relation to said stripping roll in position to engage the inner face of the leading free edge portion of said sheet as the sheet is carried around by the platen and for moving said second roll outwardly in timed relation for pressing said leading free edge portion of the sheet into holding engagement with said strip: ping roll for stripping the sheet from the band as the platen continues its rotation.

In a duplicating machine, a frame, an arcuate platen journalled therein, a duplicating band on said platen, means to rotate said platen, a margin device adjacent said platen and operable to engage a sheet with the advancing edge of said duplicating band so that a short portion of the sheet at theadvancing edge thereof is free of said band, stripping mechanism for removing the sheets from said ban-d, said stripping mechanism comprising a pair of stripping rolls and means to direct the advancing edge of said sheet to said rolls, said last named means comprising a third roll, means mounting said third roll for movemen from within the path of the advancing edge of a sheet held on said band to engagement with one of said stripping rolls, and means for moving said third roll in timed relation to the platen movement, said margin device having a pair of sheet receiving and positioning members, one of said members being adjustably mounted upon the other member.

In a duplicating machine, a frame, an arcuate platen journalled therein, a duplicating band on said platen, and stripping means for stripping sheets from said platen comprising a pair of rolls adjacent said platen but out of its path of rotation, a third roll movable between a position spaced from both of said rolls and within the path of said platen and a position in engagement with one of said pair of rolls.

In a duplicating machine, a frame, an arcuate platen journalled therein, a duplicating band on said platen, and stripping means for stripping sheets from said platen comprising a pair of rolls adjacent said platen but out of its path of rotation, a third roll movable between a position spaced from both of said rolls and within the path of said platen and a position in engagement with one of said pair of rolls, means pressing said pair of rolls toward each other, one of said pair of rolls being gradually reduced in diameter from the central portion toward the ends thereof.

In a. duplicating machine having a frame, an arcuate platen journalled therein, a duplicating band thereon and means to rotate said platen, stripping means for stripping sheets from said band, comprising a pair of stripping rolls, means for guiding the advancing edge of a sheet on said band to said rolls, spring means at the opposite ends of said rolls urging them together, and drive means for said rolls, one of said rolls being tapered toward the ends thereof from its center.
8. In a duplicating machine having a frame, an arcuate platen journalled therein, a duplicating band thereon and means to rotate said platen, stripping means for stripping sheets from said band, comprising a pair of stripping rolls, means 3 for guiding the advancing edge of a sheet on said band to said rolls, spring means at the opposite ends of said rolls urging them together, and drive means for said rolls, one of said rolls being tapered toward the ends thereof from its center, said guide means comprising a roll movable from a position in the path of said platen to a position in engagement with said tapered roll.
9. In a duplicating machine, a frame, an arcuate platen journalled therein, a duplicating band on said platen, means to apply sheets to said band with the forward edge thereof projecting beyond the band to be engaged by a stripping means, and stripping means comprising a main stripping roll, a second stripping roll in engagement with said main roll, means to rotate said rolls, and a third roll movable from a position spaced from the main roll and in the path of the advancing edge of a sheet on said band to a position where it presses against said main roll in advance of the second roll.

In a duplicating machine, a frame, an arcuate platen journalled therein, a duplicating band on said platen, means to apply sheets to said band with the forward edge thereof projecting beyond the band to be engaged by a stripping means, and stripping means comprising a main stripping roll, a second stripping roll in engagement with said main roll, means to rotate said rolls, and a third roll movable from a position spaced from the main roll and in the path of the advancing edge of a sheet on said band to a position where it presses against said main roll in advance of the second roll, said main roll being gradually decreased in diameter from the center thereof toward its ends whereby to compensate for bending of the rolls along their axes.

In a duplicating machine, a frame, an arcuate platen journalled therein, a duplicating band on said platen, means to apply sheets to said band with the forward edge thereof projecting beyond the band to be engaged by a stripping means, stripping means to strip sheets from said band, said sheet applying means comprising a paper feed chute, a margin device movable into and out of position beneath the feed chute, said margin device having an upper margin member and a lower margin member spaced farther from the feed chute than the upper member, and a pressure roll adapted to engage sheets fed to either of said margin members and press them against the band on the platen.

In a duplicating machine, a frame, an arcuate platen journalled therein, a duplicating band on said platen, means to apply sheets to said band with the forward edge thereof projecting beyond the band to be engaged by a stripping means, stripping means to strip sheets from said band, said sheet applying means comprising a paper feed. chute, a margin device movable into and out of position beneath the feed chute, said margin device comprising pivoted arms, a plate connecting the free ends of said arms and a margin member adjustably mounted on said plate and having a trough to receive sheets from said chute, and a pressure roll for pressing sheets fed to said margin member against the band on the platen.
