Abstract

A device for joining standard sized sawn battens 3, used in the tiling or slating of roofs, consists of a square tube 1 that accepts the ends of two battens 3. Tapered fins 2 within the tube 1 compensate for variations in nominal batten size. Keep tabs 4 or teeth prevent removal of a batten 3 once inserted. A striking tab 5 allows use of a hammer to effect the joint. A centre stop 7 prevents over-insertion from one side. Nail holes 6 allow fixing to a rafter. The device is constructed of metal or plastics.

Description

BATTEN JOINTER THE INVENTION relates to a device for jointing battens. As a building contractor, particular in the construction of tiled or slated and battened roofs, the roofer lays and then nails battens across the rafters and then must cut the batten back to the rafter nearest the end of the batten so that the batten is jointed half way across the rafter. The cutting of the batten in situ is quite awkward and there is a danger of tearing the underfelt with the saw. When nailing the two ends which butt together on one rafter it is common for the batten to split. This procedure continues until the edge of the roof is reached. Tfle overnanging batten is trimmed off and usually discarded, wasting considerable lengths of batten.
The batten jointer is used to connect togetner any two lengths of batten whether or not the joint falls directly over a rafter below. Thus in situ cutting over the rafters and undertelt is avoided, and the laying and nailing of the battens proceeds without this delay. Wastage of batten is minimised.
The batten jointer is pushed or tapped onto the end of the batten that is about to to be laid, and the open end of the device then fastens similarly onto the batten already laid making the joint. Locking grips secure the battens in the jointing device and nail holes are provided should the jointer fall directly over a rafter and require to be nailed. The batten jointer gives sufficient strengtn to tne batten Joint so tnat it may be safely stood upon in the same way as unjointed batten.
The jointer is capable or accepLiiig ana tolerating tne variation in nominal size of batten from different suppliers, which being a sawn dimension timber are never absolutely identical.
Different sized batten jointers are made for each differnt standard size of roofing batten.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an example with reference to the accompanying perspective drawing, Figure 1.
The device consists of a square section of metal or plastic tube 1. Two sets of tapered fins 2 set at right angles to each other are set within the tube 1 that progressively tighten onto a batten 3 by cutting into the end grain as it is introduced into the tube 1, whilst also allowing for variations in nominal size of the batten. Sharp keep tabs or teeth 4 project into the tube 1 that serve to grip the batten 1 and prevent it being withdrawn.
A striking tab 5 is provided at the side of the batten jointing tube that allow the device to be fitted firmly with taps from a hammer.
Nail holes 6 are provided so that should the batten jointing tube fall over or very near to a rafter it can be through nailed and fixed to the rafter.
Figure 2 shows a longitudinal cross section of the device and shows the centre stop 7, the keep tabs or teeth 4 and the second set of tapered fins fins 2 set at right angles the other tapered fins 2.
Figure 3 is a cross section viewing trom above and shows the tapered fins 2 which grip the batten 3 and the centre stop 7.
A centre stop 7 is provided to ensure that one or other of the battens 1 does not penetrate beyond the centre of the device.

Claims (5)

1. A device for joining battens.
2. A device for joining battens that allows for variation in nominal size of the battens.
2. A device as in 1 and 2 that embodies tapering grips with the device to progressively secure the batten as it is introduced.
3. A device as in 1 and 2 that embodies sharp keep tabs, or teeth, that prevent withdrawal of the batten.
4. A device as in 1 and 2 above that is provided with a striking tab so that the jointer may be installed and set with the aid of a hammer.
